3 Abstract This paper consolidates available information about the Oracle Database Instant Client libraries for Oracle Database 11g Release 2 on IBM Power Systems servers running Linux. It describes what the Oracle Database Instant Client is and how a customer can use components in the Oracle Database Instant Client downloadable package. We also describe benefits of running the Oracle Database Instant Client on Power Systems servers with Linux and reasons why a customer would choose to select this alternative. This paper summarizes the information available at the time of this publication. It might be updated as changes, such as new certifications, are available. It is meant to be used only as a guide. For any official Oracle certification information, please refer to Oracle s My Oracle Support website. Introduction Linux on Power Systems is the combination of a Linux-based operating system (OS) running on IBM Power Systems servers with Power Architecture technology. This IBM offering is the result of uniting the high-performing Power Architecture with the open-source Linux operating system. This combination produces a customizable system capable of handling large quantities of data more efficiently without the need for additional hardware. IBM POWER processor-based systems offer reliability, availability and serviceability characteristics that are not commonly found in server families running Linux and provide mission-critical applications a higher level of support than other 32 or 64-bit Linux environments. Linux on Power Systems servers include PowerVM virtualization built into the system. PowerVM is designed to pool resources and optimize their use across multiple application environments and operating system instances. This increases server efficiency by creating higher utilization per core and more throughput per server. For more information about Linux on Power Systems servers, refer to the following web page: ibm.com/systems/power/software/linux/ Oracle Database 11g Release 2 Instant Client availability on Linux on Power Systems servers On December 4, 2014, Oracle announced the release of the Oracle Database 11g Release 2 Instant Client package for use on IBM Power Systems servers running in Big Endian mode. This version is current in the Oracle support process, and can be used with the following versions of Red Hat and SUSE Linux including: Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) Server release 7.0 and above Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server release 6.6 and above SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES) 11 Service Pack 3 and above The Instant Client package enables customers and ISVs (Independent Software Vendors) to build and run their applications on SLES 11 SP3 and above and on RHEL 6.6 or 7.0 and above on IBM Power Systems, and connects the application to Oracle Database 11g or 12c running on AIX Versions 6.1 or 7.1, or other database servers, such as the IBM z Systems running the Oracle Database on Linux.
4 The Oracle Database Client / Server Interoperability Support Matrix for Different Oracle Versions document is available at My Oracle Support website (support.oracle.com) at the document ID number What is the Oracle Database Instant Client? The Oracle Database Instant Client is a set of libraries which helps a user to run his or her applications without having a standard Oracle Database client installation. In other words, it helps the user to seamlessly run applications without the need of an installed ORACLE_HOME. These lightweight libraries reduce the disk space usage significantly while helping the user to run OCI, OCCI, Pro-C, ODBC and JDBC applications without modifications. The Oracle Database Instant Client package comes with a builtin Sqlplus binary which can be used as a client to connect to an Oracle Database. The Oracle Database Instant Client package is a complete Oracle client that can be shipped with an application allowing ISVs and Oracle partners to benefit from this efficient packaging. This eliminates the need of an additional installation of the Oracle Database client by customers. The Oracle Database Instant Client can be freely downloaded by customers from Oracle s website. It is available at no additional cost to current Oracle customers. Why run the Oracle Database Instant Client package? Fast deployment and upgrades The process of deploying the Oracle Database Instant Client is very fast, simple and straight forward. It involves simply unzipping the package to proper directory and setting few environment variables such as CLASSPATH and LD_LIBRARY_PATH so that the applications will pick up the libraries from the newly installed path. Replaces full installation of Oracle Database Client With the Oracle Database Instant Client package, there is no need to perform a full Oracle Database client installation using the media. If the client has to run from multiple machines, each machine can have the Oracle Database Instant Client deployed and thus the database access is possible from every machine. Since the Oracle Database Instant Client is a set of light-weight libraries (compact), it occupies only a small amount of disk when compared to full installation of the Oracle Database client. No functionality lost With the Oracle Database Instant Client, all OCI, OCCI, JDBC and ODBC client applications will continue to work without any loss in functionality. The libraries are well tested and certified on various platforms and customers can use it without recompilation.
5 Free license Customers do not require a separate license to run the Oracle Database Instant Client! It is available at no charge for development and production activities for already registered customers using other Oracle products. Packaging of the Oracle Database Instant Client The following table shows the different packages available for the Oracle Database 11g Release 2 Instant Client for Linux on Power Systems servers. Oracle Database Instant Client Package Basic Basic Lite JDBC Supplement SQL Plus SDK ODBC WRC Description All files required to run OCI, OCCI and JDBC-OCI applications Smaller version of the Basic package, with only English error messages and Unicode, ASCII, and Western European character set support (10.2 only) Additional support for XA, Internationalization, and RowSet operations under JDBC Additional libraries and executable for running SQL*Plus with the Oracle Database Instant Client Additional header files and an example makefile for developing Oracle applications with the Oracle Database Instant Client Additional libraries for enabling ODBC applications Workload Replay Client used to replay workload for RAT's DB Replay Feature Installation process The following steps show how to install the Oracle Database Instant Client on Linux on Power Systems servers. 1. Download the Oracle Database 11gR2 ( ) Instant Client packages for Linux on Power from OTN: For 32-bit Big Endian For 64-bit Big Endian 2. Unzip the files into the required directory, for example: IC_DIR 3. Set the environment variables as follows: Set the LD_LIBRARY_PATH to <IC_DIR>/instantclient_11_2 so that C/C++ programs using OCI or OCCI interface to access the Oracle Database server can pick up required libraries from the Oracle Database Instant Client.
6 Set CLASSPATH to different jar files in <IC_DIR>/instantclient_11_2 so that Java programs using JDBC interface to access the Oracle Database can pick up required jar files from the Oracle Database Instant Client. The important jar files are ojdbc6.jar (JDBC driver), orai18n.jar (NLS classes). Set the PATH variable to include <IC_DIR>/instantclient_11_2 so that the sqlplus binary is available for the user. Customers currently using the Oracle Database Instant Client 10g Release 2 can upgrade to the 11gR2 version by simply replacing the 10gR2 libraries with the newer 11gR2 version. Benefits of using the Oracle Database Instant Client With the Oracle Database Instant Client package, Independent Software Vendors (ISVs) can package a full-featured Oracle client with their applications. ISVs can save developer and support costs. The Oracle Database Instant Client can be packaged with the application and have it installed from within the application installer without any additional cost. There is no need for any customers to have a separate Oracle Database Client installation as a pre-requisite to use the application. Thus the application becomes self-sufficient and fully capable. This means that the developer of an application can offer a complete encapsulated offering. The only testing required in this scenario is the testing of the Oracle Database Instant Client configuration and installation from the application. Since this is a lightweight package it saves disk space in a customer environment. The Oracle Database Instant Client deployment is very simple and fast and thus it reduces application deployment downtimes. The Oracle Database Instant Client can be redistributed by ISVs to their customers in their custom installations. Enterprises can redistribute the Oracle Database Instant Client within their organizations. Customers can contact Oracle Support for Oracle Database Instant Client issues with their standard support contract for Oracle Database software. Last, but not least, the Oracle Database Instant Client is an excellent choice for installations planning to migrate some of their applications from an x86 architecture to an IBM Power Systems architecture. With the availability of this option, the developer can offer a complete encapsulated application which can use and exploit the Power Architecture features and functions.
