3 Teacher Lesson Plan: Handshakes Lesson: Mastering the Handshake Objective: A handshake is a critical part of a first impression. This lesson provides information and suggested demonstrations for a proper handshake. Time Needed: 15 minutes Activities: Printing the handouts (pages 15 and 16) in this section is an option. Role-playing and demonstrations are key for this exercise. Room Set-up: Classroom style 2013 The American Academy of Etiquette! 5

4 Dialogue for the Lesson on Handshakes Teacher Lesson Plan: Handshakes How many of you like to shake hands? Today we are going to learn everything you need to know about shaking hands. Shaking hands is a very important part of a good first impression. I need a volunteer. Demonstrate a handshake with a student. Start with a wimpy handshake by grabbing just the fingertips. Then demonstrate a strong and impressive handshake. Here is what you need to know about an impressive handshake: (page 15) Be a leader and always initiate a handshake. Always stand for a handshake. Squarely face the individual and make eye contact. Extend your right hand with your thumbs up and fingers extended. Make web to web contact. This step is extremely important. If you do not make web to web contact, then you will have a wimpy handshake. Shake two times. 5 Teacher Lesson Plan: Handshakes What not to do when shaking hands: (Page 16): Descriptions Offer a fishy wimpy handshake Not firm enough The Politician or the Glove Place your left hand over the entire handshake Bone Crushing Your grip is too firm The Queen or just the fingertip Offer just your fingertips Activity # 1 Group Handshakes Have all of your students stand and go around the room and shake hands with each other. In a classroom setting at school, consider starting the day by shaking hands The American Academy of Etiquette! 7

6 Module One Lesson 3: Handshakes Handout MASTERING THE HANDSHAKE A good handshake is expected in today s world. The handshake is deep rooted in our culture. Here is everything you need to know to have a handshake that you can be proud to extend. In less than 5 seconds, someone you are meeting for the first time can learn a great deal about you. A proper handshake shows you are: CONFIDENT COMPETENT TRUSTWORTHY HAVE THE ABILITY TO FOLLOW THROUGH When to Shake Hands Upon meeting someone for the first time Greeting friends To say goodbye The beginning and ending of a job interview As a way of saying thank you 2013 The American Academy of Etiquette! 8

Extend your right hand with your thumbs up and fingers extended. Make web to web contact. This step is extremely important. 9 Module One Lesson 10: Self-Respect Handout Imagine This! Let s imagine you have a younger brother. You have been asked to teach him about self-respect. 11 Module Three Lesson 1: Public Places Handout Getting In and Out of Public Spaces Escalators When stepping on to an escalator, hold on or let an adult assist you. Stand to the right side so that if necessary someone can pass you on the left. Elevator When waiting for the elevator as the door opens, pause and let those getting off exit first, then enter the elevator. Men and boys should allow the women or girls to enter first as they are holding the doors of the elevator. If the elevator is crowded, those that are at the front step out first. Revolving Doors Boys and men let women and girls go first. This way they can push the door. If you are with an adult, let them guide you. Opening Doors Whoever gets there first opens the door. Always say thank you to the person who opens it for you. It is such a nice gesture to look behind you when you are passing through a door in public. Hold it open for the person who is entering behind you The American Academy of Etiquette! 13

For this lesson we will learn two settings, one that is casual and the other a bit more formal. Navigating a table setting is easy and not as daunting and stuffy as you might think. 14 Module Four Lesson 7: Have You Ever Wondered...Handout Have You Ever Wondered What To Do When.? 1) Your friend is so busy talking and carrying on at the dinner table that they forgot to put their napkin in their lap and they are chewing with their mouth open. Your friend is not using their manners at all. Should you still use yours? 2) The end of the year sports banquet is tonight and you are sitting with a large group of eight people. The table is pre-set with a formal place settings. The bread basket is passed and you look down at your place setting and notice the person sitting next to you has used yours! What should you do? 3) You are sitting down to dinner at your best friend s house. They pass the big bowl of broccoli your way. You do not like broccoli. What should you do? 4) You are out to dinner and you drop your fork. Do you pick it up? 5) You bite into a piece of steak with gristle. What do you do? 6) You are at a friend s house for dinner. Their mother is a wonderful cook but something is on your plate that you do not recognize. Hmmm.you are sure it is delicious but you are not sure how to eat it.
