1 Deploying a Virtual Router Redundancy Protocol (VRRP) Strategy Between an Avaya P330 Multilayer Switch and an Avaya P580/P882 MultiService Switch with Multiple Masters - Issue 1.0 Abstract Network Managers may use an IETF standard for router redundancy known as Virtual Router Redundancy Protocol (VRRP). VRRP is designed to eliminate the single point of failure inherent in the static default routed environment. These Application Notes explain how to configure VRRP between an Avaya P330 Multilayer Switch and an Avaya P580/P882 MultiService Switch. 1 of 9

2 1. Introduction These Application Notes describe how to configure VRRP between an Avaya P332GT-ML Multilayer Switch and an Avaya P580 MultiService Switch as illustrated in Figure 1. In this example, the Avaya P332GT-ML switch and the Avaya P580 switch share a common network, /24, and exchange VRRP information through an Avaya P333T Stackable Switch. The Avaya P333T switch is acting as a generic Layer 2 switch with all default settings and is not described in detail here. Two end nodes, PC 1 and PC 2, are load balanced between two different default gateways, on the Avaya P332GT-ML switch and on the Avaya P580 switch. If anything should happen to either switch, VRRP will tell the surviving switch to act as the default gateway of the affected switch. Although these Application Notes show the Avaya P332GT-ML switch, the Avaya P333R Multilayer Switch or the Avaya P332G-ML Multilayer Switch supports the same configuration. Likewise, even though an Avaya P580 switch is used here, the Avaya P882 MultiService Switch also supports the same configuration. VRRP works independently of any routing protocol. For completeness, RIP version 2 configurations are shown to communicate with the corporate network. However, OSPF or any other supported routing protocol may be used Background The Virtual Router Redundancy Protocol (VRRP) is designed to eliminate the single point of failure inherent in the static default routed environment. VRRP specifies an election protocol that dynamically assigns responsibility for a virtual router to one of the VRRP routers on a LAN. The VRRP router controlling the IP addresses associated with a virtual router is called the Master, and it forwards packets sent to these IP addresses. The election process provides dynamic fail-over in the forwarding responsibility, should the Master become unavailable. Any of the virtual router s IP addresses on a LAN can then be used as the default first hop router by end-hosts. The advantage gained from using VRRP is a higher availability default path without requiring configuration of dynamic routing or router discovery protocols on every end-host. VRRP specifies an election protocol to provide the virtual router function. All protocol messaging is performed using IP multicast datagrams, so the protocol can operate over a variety of multi-access LAN technologies supporting IP multicast. Each VRRP virtual router has a single well-known MAC address allocated to it. The virtual router MAC address is used as the source in all periodic VRRP messages sent by the Master router to enable bridge learning in an extended LAN. A virtual router is defined by its virtual router identifier (VRID) and a set of IP addresses. A VRRP router may associate a virtual router with its real addresses on an interface, and may also be configured with additional virtual router mappings and priority for virtual routers it is able to back up. The mapping between VRID and addresses must be coordinated among all VRRP routers on a LAN. However, there is no restriction against reusing a VRID with a different 2 of 9

3 address mapping on different LANs. The scope of each virtual router is restricted to a single LAN. To minimize network traffic, only the Master for each virtual router sends periodic VRRP Advertisement messages. A Backup router will not attempt to preempt the Master unless it has higher priority. This eliminates service disruption unless a more preferred path becomes available. It is also possible to administratively prohibit all preemption attempts. The only exception is that a VRRP router will always become Master of any virtual router associated with addresses it owns, as illustrated in these Application Notes. In other words, if the VRRP address is the same address as the interface address then the VRRP interface will automatically become the Master. If the Master becomes unavailable, then the highest priority Backup will transition to Master after a short delay, providing a controlled transition of the virtual router responsibility with minimal service interruption. VRRP can be configured in one of two ways. In the first, there is a single active Master router and a Backup router, or multiple Backup routers. This is simple, but expensive, since the second router is only used during fail-over. The second way is illustrated in this document, and employs multiple master routers and backup routers. This is more complex, but utilizes the second router. For example, in a two-router environment both routers can be Master and Backup routers for each other. In this case, the end nodes can have their default gateways divided between the two routers. This is a much more desirable configuration as each router is utilized, and is load balancing network traffic. End nodes can be manually assigned to the two different gateways, or they can use a common split DHCP scope configuration in order to automatically receive the different default gateways on the same segment. 3 of 9
