1 Thank you for taking the time out of your busy schedule to complete the LMU personal safety, prevention and preparedness training for an active shooter situation. All of us at LMU are committed to your safety and we look forward to empowering you with personal safety information. 1

2 At the end of this training, you will: Understand the definition of an active shooter. Learn ways you can prepare for, protect yourself from, and respond to an active shooter situation. Become familiar with active shooter prevention tips. Know where to sign up for/update your contact information for LMU Alert. 2

3 By definition an active shooter is an individual actively engaged in killing or attempting to kill people in a confined and populated area; in most cases, active shooters use firearms and there is no pattern or method to their selection of victims. Active shooter situations tend to be unpredictable and evolve very quickly. They are often over within 10 to 15 minutes even before law enforcement arrives on the scene. During this training, we will review personal safety tips for a number of scenarios so you will know what to do whether the active shooter is in your immediate presence or if you are outside in an open area or in a secure location. 3

4 If an active shooter is in your immediate presence, remember the number one priority is your safety and the preservation of life. Do your best to remain calm and shift to a survival mentality. Tell yourself, I will survive. If it is safe to do so, evacuate the area or run away from the shooter. Otherwise conceal yourself and shield yourself. Find something, anything, to hide behind a table, a chair, a tree, a parked car, a mailbox. When people are scared they tend to huddle together. In an active shooter situation, in which the victims are random, you become a much easier target when you are huddled as a group. Remain quiet and turn your cell phone on silent to prevent drawing attention to yourself and giving away your hiding place. Crouch down and spread out. Only as a last resort, should you try to incapacitate the shooter. If you choose to go that route, make a plan and try to coordinate with others. Commit to your actions and always know what your next step will be. 4

5 If you are indoors and the Active shooter is not in your immediate presence--in other words you ve received an LMU Alert notifying you of an active shooter on campus or you hear gunshots if it is safe to do so, close and lock windows and doors. Take a moment to become familiar with the doors in the classrooms, offices, and other spaces you frequent on campus. In some cases, you may need to get creative to secure the door by using various objects like a belt or a neck tie. In all situations, but especially if the door opens into the hallway, you should create obstacles that will block entry into the room by moving heavy furniture against the door. Remember, active shooters typically shoot victims at random. If you make it difficult for them to enter the room, they may very well move on. You want to make it appear as though the space you are occupying is empty. Close blinds and curtains. Stay away from windows and doors. Turn off the lights, remain quiet, and eliminate all noise turn your cell phone on silent and shut off televisions, radios, ipods and any other devices. 5

6 If an active shooter is not in your immediate presence and you are outdoors: Find a secure location if it is safe to do so. If you are unable to find a secure location, conceal yourself and shield yourself find something to hide behind. And remember: crouch down and spread out. 6

7 In all situations, as soon as it is safe, call 9-1-1, or from a campus phone. Don t assume that somebody else will make the call. In fact, the more information the operator can acquire, the easier it will be for the Los Angeles Police Department to gain situational awareness and for the Lost Angeles Fire Department to assist victims. If possible, call the Department of Public Safety as soon as it is safe to do so. The phone number for DPS is or 222 from a campus phone. Do not open the door for anyone other than a police officer or DPS. Be sure to ask for ID. Do not respond to any voice commands until you can verify with certainty that they are being issued by a police officer or by Public Safety. 7

8 When calling or DPS, the following information would be helpful: Location of the active shooter. Number and physical description of the shooter. Number and type of weapons held by the shooters. Number of potential victims at your location. Even if you only have one of these pieces of information, call or DPS. The more information they have, the easier it will be for them to assist you. 8

9 When police officers arrive on scene, their priority is to locate and neutralize the active shooter. During this time, they may not be able to provide medical assistance or facilitate an evacuation. When confronted by a police officer: Remain calm and follow instructions. Put down any items in your hands (e.g. bags, jackets, cell phone, etc.). Raise your hands and spread your fingers so they know that you are, in fact, a victim. Keep your hands visible at all times. Avoid quick movements toward officers, and do not hold onto them for safety. Avoid pointing, screaming or yelling. Keep in mind that the Los Angeles Police Department will be working very closely with the Los Angeles Fire Department. As soon as it is safe to do so, the Los Angeles fire department will come on campus to assist victims. 9

10 Early detection of individuals demonstrating odd or threatening behavior may be the best method for reducing the likelihood of active shooter events If you notice any odd or threatening behavior in any individual on campus, report it to DPS immediately at , or 222 from a campus phone. 10

12 There are a number of things you can do to prepare yourself for an active shooter situation: The first is to register for LMU Alert. You can do so at We encourage you to review your information on an annual basis and make updates as necessary. Learn the evacuation routes, which are posted in or adjacent to the stairwell in every building on campus. Evacuation routes are also posted on the back of every door in the residence halls and campus apartments, and in learning spaces across campus. If you have questions about the evacuation routes, contact your building captain or the Department of Public Safety. If you have questions about the evacuation route in your residence hall or apartment complex, contact your Resident Assistant or Resident Director. Take note of the two nearest exits and possible escape routes from any room and facility you visit on campus. When walking through campus, we encourage you to think about possible locations where you could shelter-in-place and protect yourself in an active shooter scenario. 12

13 At all times, be sure to carry items that are essential to your health (e.g. medication, glasses, emergency contact information, etc.). Carry your LMU OneCard. Memorize the DPS phone number and/or program it into your cell phone. DPS: or 222 from a campus phone. Take note of the location of emergency blue poles on campus.
