HP 3PAR StoreServ Storage Replication Integration Guide with Microsoft Azure Site Recovery Document Version: 1.0 Updated Date: 17 th Dec, 2014 Applies to: Azure Administrators SCVMM Administrators Scenario Details Azure Site Recovery can help you protect important applications by coordinating the replication and recovery of private clouds across sites, whether you re protecting dozens or hundreds of virtual machines. You can protect your applications to your own second site, a hoster s site, or even use Azure as your disaster recovery site and avoid the expense and complexity of building and managing your own secondary location. Site Recovery also integrates with storage solutions such HP 3PAR StoreServ to provide Site to Site disaster recovery for Hyper-V environments by leveraging the SAN replication capabilities that are natively offered by HP 3PAR. Learn more about Azure Site Recovery here and about the SAN replication option here Site to Site Disaster Recovery Reference Architecture Microsoft Azure Site Recovery (ASR) enables protection, replication and failover of virtual machines, ensuring that mission-critical applications are always up and running. Microsoft Azure Site Recovery orchestrates replication and failover for virtual machines running on Hyper-V host servers managed by Microsoft System Center Virtual Machine Manager (SC-VMM) clouds. Advantages of using HP 3PAR StoreServ Storage in an ASR deployment include: 3PAR RC offloads host from doing additional work like replication Handling failure cases due to built-in enterprise resiliency Carrying out data integrity checks
Microsoft ASR uses the HP 3PAR Remote Copy feature through SMI-S to create and manage the Replication groups. HP 3PAR Remote Copy is a host-independent, array-based data mirroring solution that enables affordable data distribution and disaster recovery for applications. With this utility, user s can copy virtual volumes from one 3PAR StoreServ to another. HP 3PAR Remote Copy provides the following solutions: Protection Failover Reverse Protection Test Failover Figure 1. Site to site disaster recovery reference architecture

Known Issues/Limitations: 1. Disable Protection isn t working Description: The disable protection workflow will not remove a replication group when the replication group is in a failover state. Both the primary and failover storage systems and the communication channel between them must be available for ASR to remove a replication group. If a planned or unplanned failover has occurred then the group must be recovered before it can be deleted by ASR. ASR s reverse roles workflow may be used to recover a replication group after a planned or unplanned failover. 2. Mixed Synchronization Modes: Description: HP 3PAR does not support the use of mixed synchronization modes over the same Remote Copy link. When both synchronous and asynchronous mode remote Replication Groups are required for the same pair of Storage Systems, then all groups with the same synchronization mode must use the same Remote Copy link. When used with ASR, HP 3PAR will automatically select the appropriate link (by selecting the Remote copy Target that uses the appropriate link). However, if groups are also configured outside of ASR it is possible that all available links will be configured with the same synchronization mode. If this occurs refer to the HP 3PAR Remote Copy Software User Guide ( and select the support link for your StoreServ product) for instructions on how to assign a different mode or new target to an existing Remote copy group. Contacting HP Support For worldwide technical support information, see the HP support website at: Before contacting HP, collect the following information: Product model names and numbers Technical support registration number (if applicable) Product serial numbers Error messages Detailed questions
How to collect HP 3PAR StoreServ and cimxml Logs To collect Logs, the user is expected to have the root credentials for HP 3PAR StoreServ Storage and access through SSH or access to the Service Processor of the array. To collect cimserver logs: Procedure from a SSH with root access: 1. Go to tpd location cd /var/log/tpd 2. Tar cimserver files tar cvf /common/cimserver.tar cimser* Procedure from a Service Provider to capture log files: 1. ssh spdood@<sp ip address> 2. su, password = <sp root user password> 3. Log into the command shell of the HP 3PAR StoreServ array ssh -i ~spcomm/.ssh/<cert file> root@<array IP address> where <cert file> = the file in ~spcomm/.ssh directory which name is Processor array name 4. From HP 3PAR StoreServ array prompt cd /var/log/tpd tar cvf /common/cimserver.tar cimser* exit 5. From the vsp prompt copy the cimserver.tar file scp -i ~spcomm/.ssh/<cert file> root@<array IP address>:/common/cimserver.tar cimserver.tar And share the tar file in the report. To collect cimxml logs: Create a Temp folder in C:\ drive Enable SMI-S tracing and logging Refer the Storage Service (SMI-S) Tracing and Logging link for more information Run the ASR operation for which logs are required. Share cimxml logs which would be created in Temp folder Frequently Asked Questions 1. Which type of replication do you support with ASR? Synchronous and Asynchronous Periodic 2. Do you support both 2DC and 3DC configuration with ASR?
No. Only 2DC is supported. 3. Will ASR help you give customers more flexible data protection? (e.g., fail over to another primary datacenter, to a provider site, or to Azure) Yes 4. Will ASR help you offer customers a simpler, lower-cost DR solution? Yes 5. Will ASR help you simplify DR recovery plan testing? Yes 6. What happens in an Asynchronous scenario, if the disaster happens before the synchronous time? Currently ASR supports only 1 to 1 array configuration and the delta data would be lost if the disaster happens before the synchronization. In order to avoid this, 3DC support is required, which is not supported from ASR currently. 7. What is the Security when the VMs replicated from Azure? Microsoft Azure and Azure Site Recovery follow a stringent security and privacy model. In this solution, only SCVMM Server is connected to Azure service, hyper-v hosts and storage infrastructure is not connected. All data replication is always site to site between HP 3 PAR arrays. All communication from SCVMM to Azure Site recovery is always outbound over HTTPS and can be controlled via a proxy server. Azure Site Recovery only have non-pii metadata which it uses for orchestration of DR operations. All DR operations, including storage related operations are always brokered via SCVMM which in on-premises. Please refer to following links for additional details Microsoft Azure Privacy statement: 8. What is the downtime/outage on the VMs when there is a disaster? For a Synchronous RG, the outage is the time the ASR takes to complete the failover operation. From Storage standpoint it is less than a second. For an asynchronous RG, the outage is the time the ASR takes to complete the failover operation and the periodic time set at the 3PAR side for the respective RG.
