Diet Often times people misuse the word diet. A diet is the pattern of food you eat. This means everyone is on a diet.

Diet Even though we are all on a diet all of our diets are different. There are many things that influence the things we eat. Nutritional Factors Taste Convenience Culture Family Money Mood Media

Diet Influences Nutritional Factors Hopefully all of us pick foods that will improve our overall health. Some things to consider when picking foods for nutritional factors would be: High Nutrient Dense Foods Varity of fruits and vegetables Low Saturated Fat foods Low Simple Carbohydrate Foods Daily Calorie intake for: Gender Age Height and Weight Activity Level

Diet Influences Taste: We tend to eat foods that we taste good to us. It is important to try new foods because you never know if you really like it until you try it Sometimes as we get older our food taste change. Just because you didn t like a food when you were younger doesn t mean you won t like it now.

Assignment #1 Make a list of 3 foods that you don t like to eat. Decide what it is causing you that makes you not like it: Looks Smell Texture Taste

Diet Influences Convenience: Often times we eat food just because we see it. How many times have you seen a food item sitting out and you eat it just because it is there. We also tend to eat foods that are easy to get or make.

Convenience Continued Example: Pre packaged Foods: We need to be careful because pre-packaged foods are often times loaded with: sugars and fats and help them taste better preservatives - chemicals that help food last longer before going bad.

Convenience Continued Example: Out-to-eat: Are easier because there are so many choices and they are everywhere. But foods sold in restaurants are: Loaded with fats and sugars to get them to taste better Serving sizes are twice the amount that you should eat in one serving Far more expensive than making the food item at home

Diet Influences Culture: People tend to eat things that are common to their culture. This would include foods that are common for holidays and celebrations. Examples: Halloween lots of candy 4 th of July BBQ s

Diet Influences Family: Individual families have very unique diets. Some families cook every meal from scratch and eat around the table. Other grab something quick on their way out the door and eat in the car.

Assignment #2 With your partner discuss your family s diet. 1. Does your family eat more fresh foods or packaged foods? 2. Who does most of the grocery shopping? 3. Who does most of the cooking? 4. How often do you sit together as a family to eat?

Diet Influences Money: Have you ever had your parent tell you NO to something you wanted to eat because it cost too much. Money has huge impact on our diet. Sadly, many things that are inexpensive are also not very healthy for us Example: Dollar Menu

Diet Influences Mood Many times we eat based on what type of mood we are in. Examples: Excitement or nervousness can cause people not to want to eat Depression can cause people to binge on comfort foods Comfort foods are those that make us feel emotionally good They tend to be food that are not very healthy

Diet Influences Because moods can affect our eating habits it is important that we understand the difference between hunger and appetite. Hunger is the physical need for food. Appetite is the mental desire for food.

Diet Influence Media: Advertisements are designed to get you to buy a product. Advertisers use many different technics to get you to want the food. They focus on your appetite or desire for food

Assignment #3 Watch the following video and see how many different marking tricks you can identify.

Common Advertising Techniques Toys: Food manufactures often times include a toy for young children. This entices the child to want that food product just for the toy. They also make play toys for their brand. This makes it child identify with their brand

Common Advertising Techniques Cartoon Characters: Many food manufacturers associate a mascot with their food product. This makes the mascot very identifiable Other times they will take a common cartoon character and put it on the box. This grabs the eye of children and entices them to want the product

Common Advertising Techniques Show Positive Roles Advertisers know that their product might not be the most healthy. So instead of showing the negative side of their brand they try and put a positive light on other things the company is doing.

Common Advertising Techniques Jingles or Songs It is not by accident that advertisers spend huge amounts of money on jingles. They know they will stick in your head long after the ad is over and remind you of the product.

Assignment # 4 See if you can identify the product based on the jingle. 1. Gimme a break, gimme a break, break me off a piece of that. 2. I want my baby back, baby back, baby back ribs. 3. What would you do for a. 4. I m loving it 5. Their Great!

Common Advertising Techniques Commercials Timing: Ads for adults are during primetime hours Ads for kids are on TV stations of children or during TV shows for kids.

Common Advertising Techniques Foods or Brands Place in Movies of TV Shows: Manufacturers spend large amounts of money to get a product in a movie or TV show They know that if they can show a famous person with that product their sales will increase It also makes our brains thinking about that food product

Common Advertising Techniques Coupons / E alerts: Today, many food establishments send out coupons or E alerts for discounts of their product Seeing the ad increases our tendency to want that product

Common Advertising Techniques Food Stylist: are like make-up artists. It's their job to make the food you see in advertisements look great. But when you find out how they do it, you just might lose your appetite.

Fad Diets A fad diet is a diet that promises quick weight loss with little effort. As a consumer you need to be smarter than the advertiser.

Fad Diets Remember from the last lesson if you want to loose weight you must consume less calories than what you would burn in a day. It is all about calories in and calories out.

Fad Diets Cautions of Fad Diets High Protein Diets High Fiber Low Calorie Diets Single Food Diets Very Low Calorie Diets Gimmicks or Miracles Fasting or Cleansing Fast Weight Loss Special Pricing Before and After Testimonials
