BECSys Pool Controllers with ORPmV and FAC control
ORP (Oxidation/Reduction Potential) is a direct measure of the rate of Oxidative Disinfection Redox OXIDATIVE DISINFECTION SCALE More Oxidation = More Corrosion < Reduction (0) Oxidation > 0.1mg/L 0.2mg/L 0.3mg/L 0.4mg/L 0.5mg/L 0.8mg/L 1.0mg/L 2.0mg/L 5.0mg/L 20mg/L 100mV 200mV 300mV 400mV 500mV 600mV 700mV 800mV 865mV COMFORT ZONE FOR BACTERIA AND ORGANISMS IN WATER (Equivalent to 0C to 50C temperature) Polio Virus dies in 5mins (550mV) Polio Virus dies in 30secs (650mV) Cryptosporidium excysted in 30mins at 865mV ORP (17mg/L ph 7.2 or 40mg/L ph 7.8) Copyright TBWS July 2012
What are chloramines? Ammonia (from bathers) + Free Chlorine 650mV ORP approx 720mV ORP approx Presence of a weak oxidant acts as a REDUCTANT! Copyright TBWS July 2012
Affect of ph on FAC work value (and on ORPmV) 50% drop in FAC work value between ph 7.0 and ph 8.0 ORP mv 1mg/L free chlorine residual ph 7.0 ph 8.0 Copyright TBWS July 2012
ORP control can Predict Demand in water mV ORPmV probe ORPmV controller Pool e- Organic load Water e- e- SCAVENGING of ELECTRONS is the initiating reaction of Chlorine s toxic effect in water. This can happen up to 10mins before the residual starts to drop. TRANSFER OF ELECTRONS = VOLTAGE In this case that measured voltage is ORPmV e- e- e- Copyright TBWS July 2012
ORP Control Advantages - Summary 1. ORP is a direct measure of the rate of oxidative disinfection 2. ORP responds to the presence of a weak oxidant (chloramines) acting as a reductant in water 3. ORP responds directly to changes in the work value of a free chlorine residual 4. ORP can predict demand (initiating dosing prior to the residual starting to drop)
Sys 3 Controller with ORPmV and/or FAC control
Sys5 Controller with ORPmV and/or FAC control North Sydney Olympic Pool, 25m & Spa use both ORP and Free Chlorine probes together to control chlorine residual and disinfection
Bracketed ORPmV control (BECSys5 & Sys7 controllers) Also known as CEDOX control in SIEMENS Depolox Pool controllers Minimum allowable FAC Residual or ORP (eg 720mV or 2.0mg/L) ORPmV or FAC setpoint for normal disinfection or residual based control (eg 750mV or 2.5mg/L) Maximum allowable FAC residual or ORP (eg 3.0mg/L or 780mv)

High ORP Readings (above 850mV) - Likely Causes 1. Overdoses or manual doses of chlorine - superchlorination 2. Overdoses or manual doses of acid intentional or accidental 3. Controlled low ph in a pool (at ph 7.0) where dosing program causes it (eg, auto granular cal hypo feeders, which add acid as well) 4. Shock doses of Non-Chlorine Shock type products (with low ph. Eg, Potassium Monopersulphate) 5. Incorrect operation of equipment, or overdose by Ozonator or UV unit
Low ORP Readings (below 650mV) Likely Causes 1. Acid or CO2 supply has run out, meaning that ph has gone high (often disabling chlorine feed) 2. Chlorine supply has run out or feeder is undersized for application 3. Chlorine injection point has blocked with crystallisation (needs clean) or feeder has lost prime 4. ph feeder is undersized for application and can t keep up with ph changing effect of chlorine addition 5. Faulty ph calibration or faulty ph probe on controller
Erratic ORP Readings (Rapid Change) Likely Causes 1. Low Total Alkalinity (resistance to ph change) below 80mg/L causing unstable ph 2. Overdoses of liquid acid caused by oversized ph feeder or increased acid strength 3. Unstable sensors, caused by recent cleaning with neat acid, or superchlorination 4. Excessively high Cyanuric Acid Stabiliser levels (over 25mg/L) 5. Poorly calibrated equipment, or faulty sensors. Electrical interference

Total Chlorine Sensor Provides total chlorine and combined chlorine readings ppm range Single-point calibrations based on DPD test Compliance with new Health Department guidelines Provides alarms. Controls UV and air handling systems

Summary BECSys controllers can integrate numerous features in an aquatic facility All parameters are accessible through BECSys for Windows All inputs are logged for comprehensive data analysis All alarms are signaled through BECSys mechanisms (fax, , SMS) Operators do not need to learn to interface with multiple systems Costs savings are achieved by eliminating peripheral redundant devices, and utilizing more cost-effective proprietary sensors
