2 ENERGY CRISIS! THE PROBLEM Vietnam is experiencing an energy crisis! Vietnam s People s Committee has met, and after hours and hours of research, have come to the conclusion that if Vietnam does not reduce energy consumption within the next year, there will be no way to produce electricity. They have called on the very intelligent Grade Four students of SSIS to develop innovative solutions that will help people save energy. There is not much time! Successful prototypes will be built and used. You will help to solve the energy crisis in Vietnam! CREATE AN INNOVATIVE SOLUTION Step 1: Imagine Engineers play with possibilities. Think of as many different solutions as possible. Brainstorm ideas. Every idea is awesome! Step 2: Investigate Your job is to do your own research, observing carefully where energy is wasted. As researchers, you will record your observations in a clear and organized way. Step 3: Plan Once you have gathered enough data through your research, pinpoint one problem. Plan an innovative solution to solve that problem by improving something that already exists, using something that exists in a new way, or inventing something totally new. Step 4: Create Follow your plan, make your prototype and test it out. Step 5: Evaluate Use your prototype and your Design Notebook in order to help you reflect on your challenge.

3 THE DESIGN CYCLE IMAGINE Engineers play with possibilities Imagine ways in which people can save energy in their daily lives Brainstorm ideas and choose the best one INVESTIGATE Your job is to do your own research, observing where energy is wasted. Record your observations in a clear and organized way. PLAN Include sketches of your solution. Show what your final project will look like. Make a list of materials you will need. Make a timeline CREATE Follow your plan Make your prototype Test it out EVALUATE Ask: What works, what doesn t and what could work better? Modify your design to make it better Test it out!
