1 The Leaking Swimming Pool Sue filled up her swimming pool and then went in the house to get some toys to play with in the pool. When Sue returned she noticed that the pool was almost empty again. After a closer look, Sue found a leak in her pool where the water was escaping. Sue knew she couldn t get another pool any time soon and so she tried to think of ways to stop the leak. After thinking of ways to fix the pool, she decided to try tape to fix the leak. Sue went to the garage and found three types of tape: scotch tape, masking tape, and duct tape. She decided to try an equal amount of each tape to cover the hole and watch to see which one worked the best. First, Sue used the clear scotch tape that her mom used to wrap presents with to cover the hole. The scotch tape went on easily over the hole but did not stick very well when it came in contact with water leaking from the pool. After only 30 seconds, the scotch tape fell off and the pool began to leak again. Next, Sue used the masking tape that her dad used when he was boxing up decorations to put in the attic. The masking tape went on very easily to cover the hole, and at first seemed to work. Unfortunately, after 2 minutes the masking tape fell off too. Finally, Sue decided to try the duct tape. Sue thought that this tape looked the strongest of the three tapes. The duct tape was thicker, silver in color, and seemed to have strings running through it. Sue placed the duct tape on the hole of the swimming pool and waited for it to leak. After 5 minutes it was still holding the leak. Sue decided it was safe to refill the pool and jump in. Sue played in the pool for a couple of hours before her mom said it was time to come in. Although Sue knew that the duck tape would not hold forever, she was pleased that it did the job until she could get a new pool.
