2 Background The concept for an Adult High School program in Flagler County began in 1985 as an alternative to the GED Equivalency Diploma. The Adult High School allows a student the opportunity to earn a credit high school diploma. The School Board approved the Competency-Based Adult High School program in October Shortly thereafter, the doors opened on the first Adult High School site in Bunnell. FTI offers the 24 credit standard diploma option and the 18- credit ACCEL option: What is the distinction between the 18-credit ACCEL option and 24-credit option? 3 elective credits instead of 8 Physical education is not required Online course is not required All other graduation requirements for a 24- credit standard diploma must be met (per section (10)(d)1.-5.,Florida Statues [F.S.] Competency-based education recognizes that adult students come to the program with varying levels of achievement and a wide variety of experiences. Courses offered are of sufficient length and content to permit a level of competence that is at least equivalent to that required of students in public high school in the district.

3 Overview Flagler County Adult Education offers a program in which adults aged 16 and older are given the opportunity to earn a high school diploma through the traditional method of earning credits. This competency-based, self-paced educational program offers a full schedule of high school level courses and allows a student to proceed at his/her own pace. Upon completion, the student will earn a Flagler County Adult High School Diploma. This High School Diploma is accepted by community colleges and can result in job eligibility or promotion. Those seeking a military career should contact the armed forces recruiter to establish eligibility. Who is Eligible? Adults 16 years of age or older with an eighth grade equivalent are eligible for this program. Students are tested upon entry with the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE). To determine eligibility, call and speak with Mr. Amato, Student Service Manager. Registration Procedures There is a $30.00 Registration fee for the Adult High School program. To register, a student under the age of 18 must make an appointment with a Student Services Manager by calling At the initial interview, transcripts will be examined and/or requested from the former high school. The Student Service Manager will recommend a selection of courses based upon the required Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE) and graduation requirements.

4 Definition: Adult Secondary Education Curriculum Secondary education courses at or above the ninth grade level, for adults, including review courses in preparation for taking the General Education Development (GED) tests and courses for high school credit leading to award of a high school diploma. Such courses shall be of sufficient length and content to permit a level of competence which is at least equivalent to that required of other students in public high school in the district. The programs shall provide the opportunity for adults to enroll at any time during the year and include planning and adjusting of courses to meet individual and small group needs, continuing educational counseling, and granting of credit on the basis of actual attainment regardless of time spent in class. Rule 6A FAC. Graduation Requirements In order to graduate, students must complete 24 credits in a variety of state mandated subject areas. They must also have a minimum un-weighted GPA of 2.0, pass the EOC subject exams, and have passing scores on the 10 th Grade FCAT 2.(Reading). Attendance Policy The Adult High School is open to students Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. following the school district calendar. Every student is expected to attend during these hours in order to maintain a continuum of academic progress. Since this program is designed to meet the individual needs of its students, any extenuating circumstances that interfere with classroom attendance should be brought to the attention of the Student Service Manager in order to develop a schedule appropriate to one s personal situation.

5 Discipline The School District s Code of Student Conduct and school rules are in force during regular school hours on school premises and at such times and places, including, but not necessarily limited to, school-sponsored events, field trips, athletic functions, and other activities where school administrators have jurisdiction over students. Additionally, school officials are authorized to take administrative action when a student s misconduct away from school has a detrimental effect on the other students or on the orderly educational process. Scholarship Opportunity Flagler County s Adult and Community Education Department makes scholarships available to graduates of the Adult High School, GED, and Flagler Technical Institute programs. Scholarships may be used for any accredited postsecondary institution that is approved by Flagler County Schools Adult Education Director. The award may be applied to postsecondary classes and programs, community college A.A. and A.S. degrees, and four-year college or university programs, both in and out of the state of Florida. These scholarships may be renewable upon presentation of the previous semester s grades showing successful completion of the courses. Scholarships are awarded as funds are available.
