Framing Web Pages For a printable version of this file using Adobe's PDF file format, click the icon. HTML frames enable Web page designers to split their clients' browser windows into multiple, independently scrollable panels, with separate documents in each panel. On framed Web sites, hyperlinks in one frame can be programmed to update the content of adjacent frames, making it possible for Web programmers to incorporate intuitive, visually pleasing navigation interfaces into their Web sites. Dividing a single browser window into multiple regions for separate document viewing requires that you break away from seeing a Web page as corresponding to a single HTML file. When frames come into the HTML picture, a document with.html or.htm extension can now be one of two kinds of documents: frameset documents contain the information necessary for the browser to determine what kind of frame structure it should use when dividing the window into frames, and body documents are documents which contain content, like the ones you have been using so far. Learning the frameset document and the HTML tags that reside in it are the steps to frames mastery.. The Purpose of Frames file:///d /INST5635/Lesson5/frames.html (1 of 8) [1/15/02 10:36:38 AM]

For purposes of example, we have three independent HTML documents named a.html, b.html, and c.html. These documents, when viewed on their own, are just different background colors with a <h1> heading to indicate which document is which. The goal is to place each of these documents into a frame within one browser window, so that they look like the example to the right. Simple Frames HTML divides the browser window into parts in only one direction at a time. In this example, the window was first divided across, in the direction of rows, to form a frame for document A. Then, the lower row was divided up-and-down, in the direction of columns, to provide separate frames for documents B and C. You can always tell which direction the window was first divided into because only one border line can go completely across the browser window. Dividing the screen into frames is the work of the frameset document. Here's a simple frameset document and its result. Source Code Browser Result file:///d /INST5635/Lesson5/frames.html (2 of 8) [1/15/02 10:36:38 AM]

<html> <head> <title>a simple frame</title> </head> <frameset rows="50%,*"> <frame src="a.html" name="banner"> <frame src="b.html" name="bottom"> </frameset> </html> As you can see, this new kind of HTML document gets its name from the <frameset> tag within it. Several things about this code should stand out: There are no <body> tags. Instead, they have been replaced with <frameset> tags. This file contains absolutely no content! In fact, if a user were to view this file with a framesincapable browser, his browser window would be completely blank! The <frameset> tag declares a set of frames. First it declares whether the frames will be divided in the direction of rows or columns only one direction may be used at a time. In this example, the <frameset> tag specified division in the direction of rows and it declared the size for the first frame to be 50% of the browser's window height and * for the second frame. The special asterisk symbol (*) tells the browser to use the remainder of the screen for that frame's size, yielding, in this case, to equally sized frames. Frame sizes can be specified in percentage values, like above, which gives a proportional size of the window to the frame or in absolute size (like 70 pixels) which declares the frame to be exactly 70 pixels high. There are times when a Web designer will choose one or the other, or both. Each specified size in the list of terms of the <frameset> tag corresponds, in order, with each <frame> tag. We've color coded this in the above example to catch your eye. Note that each term in a frameset's row or column list represents only a declaration of a frame's existence and its size. Frame definitions, which specify the actual behavior of frames declared in the <frameset> tag, are indicated within the <frame> tag. The <frame> tag defines the frame and specifies how it will work. Frame tags usually have two attributes: a Web document to show through the frame. Empty frames aren't very interesting, so the frame definition contains the URL of the document to show in the src attribute. URL's can point to file:///d /INST5635/Lesson5/frames.html (3 of 8) [1/15/02 10:36:38 AM]

external files elsewhere on the net or to relative files which reside on the same server as the frameset document. When a user loads a frameset document, his browser window will first be divided into frames, and then the documents specified in the <frame> tags will be loaded and displayed within the frames. a frame name. In the frameset document, you can give each frame a name by including the attribute name="frame_name". You'll use this frame name when you learn how to target documents for display within a certain frames. The <frameset> tag can be nested as a way to subdivide frames even more. We can create the goal's three frame layout by subdividing the lower frame into two parts. Rather than defining the lower frame with a <frame> tag, as we did in the previous example, it is also acceptable to begin a new, nested frameset. Source Code <html> <head> <title>three Frames</title> </head> <frameset border=3 rows="60,*"> <frame name="banner" src="a.html"> <frameset border=3 cols="25%,*"> <frame name="navbar" src="b.html"> <frame name="main" src="c.html"> </frameset> </frameset> </html> Browser Result It can get quite complicated tracing which term in the size list corresponds with with <frame> tag definition, especially with nested frames. Indenting the framesets can help. Remembering that all frames must be defined in order of their term in the size list can also help. Theoretically, there is no limit to how deeply tags can be nested, but remember, a browser window can be divided only so many times until the frames are too small to be useful. Targets file:///d /INST5635/Lesson5/frames.html (4 of 8) [1/15/02 10:36:38 AM]

In a normal HTML document, when the user selects a hyperlink is selected, the current document disappears and is replaced by the new document. Frames work a little differently. When hyperlinks in framed documents are selected, the browser may update just the frame containing the hyperlink, a different frame, a set of frames, or even the entire window. Thus, when a hyperlink is selected, some or all parts of the browser window may change, depending on parameters specified in the hyperlink. In a frames environment, the Web designer specifies which area should be updated when a hyperlink is select by specifying the target attribute. The format for a hyperlink with a target is: <a href=document_url target="target_name">hyperlink Text</a> Any frame can be targeted by the name assigned to it in the frameset document. Also, some special targets are available, as shown in the following table: Target _self _top _blank Purpose directs the browser to update the frame containing the selected hyperlink. This is usually the default target when no target is specified. directs the browser to update the entire window, regardless of the current frame layout. directs the browser to open up a new browser window to view the document. Adding Attributes More precise control over frames can be accomplished with additional attributes. Border. The border attribute can be applied to the <frameset> tag to control the width of the border between cells. For borderless frames, set border=0. Bordercolor. Establishes the color of the border between the frames. Applied to the <frameset> tag. Scrolling. Determines whether scroll bars will appear on a frame. scrolling=yes sets scroll bars, scrolling=no disables scroll bars, and scrolling=auto enables scroll bars whenever the content is of sufficient width or length to require them. AUTO is the default. Applied to the <frame> tag. file:///d /INST5635/Lesson5/frames.html (5 of 8) [1/15/02 10:36:38 AM]

Noresize. Prohibits the user from resizing the frames. Applied to the <frame> tag. Marginheight. Space between the top and bottom of a frame and the object placed within it. Applied to the <frame> tag. Marginwidth. Space between the left and right sides of a frame and the object within it. Applied to the <frame> tag. Tag Review FRAMESET Usage Syntax Defines the layout of FRAMES with the main window. <FRAMESET attributes>content</frameset> Attributes rows="sizes" Defines the horizontal layout, or number of rows, of the FRAMESET. Each reported size corresponds to one FRAME. Sizes can be measured in percent or pixels. cols="sizes" Defines the vertical layout, or number of columns, of the FRAMESET.
