2 CE4257 Linear Finite Element Analysis Prof Koh Chan Ghee / Prof Somsak Swaddiwudhipong Workload per Week: Pre-requisite: CE3155 Structural Analysis or MA2501 Differential Equations and Systems This module equips students with the fundamentals of finite element principles to enable them to understand the behaviour of various finite elements and to be able to select appropriate elements to solve physical and engineering problems with emphasis on structural and geotechnical engineering applications. It covers weak formulation, element shape function, isoparametric concepts, 1-D, 2-D, 3-D and axisymmetric elements, field problems, modelling and practical considerations, and special topics. The module is targeted at undergraduate and graduate students involved in research or application of the finite element method in civil engineering problems. Students will understand the principles and assumptions behind the finite element method Students will be able to apply the finite element method to solve certain classes of linear problems with emphasis on structural and geotechnical applications

3 CE4258 Structural Stability & Dynamics Assoc. Prof Pang Sze Dai Workload per Week: Pre-requisite: CE3155 Structural Analysis This module provides students with basic knowledge of structural stability and dynamics for the analysis of civil engineering structures. The topics covered include general principles of stability and dynamics; buckling of beam, columns and frames; design against local and overall stability. Dynamics analysis will cover single-degree-of-freedom systems, multi-degree-of-freedom systems and continuous systems. Students are taught to deal with general stability and vibration problems of frames including computer applications and numerical formulation. The module of specialized context targets at undergraduate and graduate students in research or engineering practices relating to structural engineering applications. Students will have the ability to understand the behaviour of civil engineering structures under quasistatic and dynamic loads. Students will be able to understand the modelling, formulation and techniques for solving problems involving the dynamics and stability of structures. Students will have the ability to analyse civil engineering structures subjected to quasi-static and dynamic forces and to modify existing design when needed.

4 CE5509 Advanced Structural Steel Design Prof Richard Liew Jat Yuen Workload per Week: Pre-requisite: CE3166 Structural Steel Design or equivalent The primary objective of this module is to equip civil engineering students with sufficient design knowledge and skills on steel-concrete composite structures both for their further education and for their future engineering career. This module provides students with fundamental approaches in designing structural steel-concrete components and buildings. The students will acquire fundamental knowledge and skills to perform structural design for composite beams, slabs, columns, joints, multi-storey buildings. This enables the students to conceive a safe and economical structural system. The module is targeted at MSC civil engineering students and those with a keen interest on structural design. Understand and apply structural mechanics to the design of steel-concrete composite members, connections and systems. Relate the mechanical behaviour of structural components to the design checks that are recommended in the design code. Design composite beams, columns, slabs, joints, long span floor systems and frames based on design codes and modern computer tools. Perform limit state design to ensure structural members and frames are adequate and do not fail or deflect excessively under the design loads and make appropriate. Develop a holistic understanding on structural building systems to propose solutions that meet the needs for architectural and functional requirements as well as for sustainable development. Understand the current state of the art in research and innovation and professional practice in building design and construction.

5 CE5510 Advanced Structural Concrete Design Prof Tan Kiang Hwee Workload per Week: Pre-requisite: CE3165 Structural Concrete Design or CE4-standing or higher The objective of this module is to further equip civil engineering students with design knowledge and skills in reinforced and prestressed concrete. The module provides students with fundamental approaches in designing structural concrete components and systems. The students will learn refined methods in the design for action effects and for deflection and crack control, and in the structural design of flat slab systems, slender columns, concrete bridges, concrete water tanks, design and detailing of connections. The module is targeted at MSc civil engineering students and those with a keen interest on advanced structural concrete design. Understand and apply structural mechanics to the design of reinforced and prestressed concrete connections, components and structural systems. Relate the mechanical behaviour of structural concrete to the design checks that are recommended in the design codes. Design reinforced and prestressed concrete beams, columns, slabs, connections, bridges, water tanks using the prevailing design codes and modern computer tools. Perform limit state design to ensure structural members are adequate and do not fail or deflect excessively under the design loads. Develop a holistic understanding of structural systems to facilitate design solutions that meet the needs of architectural and functional requirements as well as for sustainable development. Understand the current state of the art including recent research and innovations and issues relevant to professional practice in infrastructure and building design and construction.

6 CE5513 Plastic Analysis Of Structures Prof Choo Yoo Sang Workload per Week: Pre-requisite: CE4-standing or higher / CE5885A (as of AY2014/15 onwards) This module provides students with basic knowledge on the theory of plasticity and their application for analysis and design of civil engineering structures. The topics covered include basic concepts of plasticity; the plastic hinge; tools used in plastic analysis and design; plastic design of beams, portal frames and multi-storey buildings, and computer methods for analysing large scale framework. Students are taught to deal with general inelastic problems of frames including computer applications and numerical formulation. The module of specialized context targets at undergraduate and graduate students in research or engineering practices relating to structural analysis and design. Understand and apply plastic analysis to determine the ultimate load of beam and frame structures Gain a good understanding in the behaviour of elastic-plastic behaviour of frame structures Apply the plastic analysis concepts in the design of components of structural frames, including members and connections.

7 CE5514 Plate & Shell Structures Prof Somsak Swaddiwudhipong Workload per Week: Pre-requisite: CE2155 Structural Mechanics and Materials or CE4-standing or higher In this specialized module, students are taught fundamentals in plate bending and shell membrane theories including axisymmetric bending of shells of revolution. Topics covered include a brief introduction to the theory of elasticity, fundamentals of plate structures, plate bending theories and plate equations, energy principles, analytical and numerical analyse of plates, vibration and buckling of plates, orthotropic plates, membrane theory for shells of revolution, membrane theory for shells of translations, axisymmetric bending of shells of revolution and design of plate and shell structures. The module is intended for undergraduate and graduate students who wish to enhance their understanding in terms of analysis and design of plates and shells used in civil and infrastructure works. Understand and apply structural mechanics to the analysis of plate and shell structures Gain a good understanding in the behaviour and developing analytical and numerical solutions to plate and shell structures Apply simple analytical tools for the analysis of plate and shell structures with complex geometry supplementing and/or validating finite element solutions.

8 CE5604 Advanced Concrete Technology Asst. Prof Moon Juhyuk / Prof Zhang Min-Hong Workload per Week: Pre-requisite: CE2155 Structural Mechanics and Materials, or CE4-standing or higher This module provides students with in-depth knowledge on the role of constituent materials of concrete such as cements, mineral admixtures, and chemical admixtures and their interactions that affect properties of fresh and hardened concrete. It also provides students with in-depth knowledge on concrete response to stresses, time-dependent deformations, and durability of concrete exposed to severe environments. The module discusses the basic considerations and design philosophy for performance-based design of concrete mixtures and production of concrete. It also discusses the progress in concrete technology and the latest development on high-strength, high-performance, lightweight, and self-compacting concrete. Sustainable development in construction industry and use of recycled aggregates and other recycled materials will be discussed as well. The module is targeted at post-graduate and final year undergraduate students who will gain knowledge from the module to complement their skill in structural design and to prepare them for their career as professional engineers. On successful completion of the module, students will be able to: understand the role of constituent materials of concrete and their interactions that affect the properties of fresh and hardened concrete; design concrete mixtures to satisfy workability, strength, and durability requirements; understand response of concrete to various stresses and time-dependent deformations; understand the basic mechanisms of deteriorations of concrete and steel reinforcement and know how to select appropriate materials and design concrete mixture to avoid/reduce the deteriorations; understand the site practice to be adopted for mass concrete and when concreting in elevated temperature; gain state-of-the-art knowledge on the basic properties of special concretes and their intended applications. Understand the use of recycled materials for sustainable development

9 CE5610 Assessment and Retrofit of Concrete Structures Prof Zhang Min- Hong / Assoc. Prof Ong Kim Chye Gary Workload per Week: Pre-requisite: CE3165 Structural Concrete Design or CE Graduate standing The primary objective of this module is to equip civil engineering students with sufficient knowledge and skills on the durability of concrete structures and the basic principles and concepts of repair and retrofitting. Various factors affecting durability of concrete will be dealt with including non-destructive tests to assess durability. The module also emphasizes the technological and application aspects in the assessment and retrofit of concrete structures including causes of deterioration and various in-situ and non-destructive tests. The module is targeted at MSc civil engineering students and those with a keen interest in durability of concrete, assessment of concrete and retrofitting of concrete structures. Understand the various factors affecting the cracking and fracture of concrete structures. Gain a good understanding of the principles and correlation factors associated with assessment of concrete structures. Develop a holistic understanding of structural considerations in design retrofitting solutions for concrete structures that meet the needs of architectural and functional requirements as well as for sustainable infrastructural development. Understand the current state of the art including recent research and innovations and issues relevant to professional practice in retrofitting infrastructure and buildings together with relevant design and construction issues.

10 CE5611 Precast Concrete Technology Assoc. Prof Ong Kim Chye Gary Workload per Week: Pre-requisite: CE3165 Structural Concrete Design, or CE4 standing or higher Preclusions: CE5610 Precast and Retrofitting Technology (taken in Semester 2, AY2008/09 or earlier) The primary objective of this module is to equip civil engineering students with sufficient design knowledge and skills on precast structural concrete both for their further education and for their future engineering career. This module provides students with fundamental approaches in designing precast concrete components and structures. The students will acquire fundamental knowledge and approaches to section analysis and design, design of connections, floor diaphragm action, precast frame structures and precast components. The module is targeted at MSc civil engineering students and those with a keen interest on precast concrete technology. Understand and apply structural mechanics to the design of precast concrete connections, components and structural systems. Relate the mechanical behaviour of precast structural concrete to the design checks that are recommended in the design codes. Design precast concrete beams, columns, slabs, connections, and framed structures using the prevailing design codes and modern computer tools. Perform limit state design to ensure precast structural members are adequate and do not fail or deflect excessively during erection and under the design loads. Develop a holistic understanding of precast framed structures to facilitate design solutions that meet the needs of architectural and functional requirements as well as for sustainable development. Understand the current state of the art including recent research and innovations and issues relevant to professional practice in precast framed structures design and construction.

11 CE6003 Numerical Methods in Engineering Mechanics Asst. Prof Poh Leong Hien Workload per Week: Pre-requisite: Graduate student standing The module introduces the basic principles of engineering mechanics modelling problems and the required numerical tools for analysis and design of engineering problems. Students will learn to understand the fundamental of finite element methods, finite difference methods, and boundary element methods in general. Related topics on numerical methods for civil engineering applications, such as linear equation solvers, eigenvalue solvers, numerical integration, solution of nonlinear problem and convergence and stability problems of numerical algorithms will be discussed. The module enables the students to acquire the numerical analysis knowledge and computational skills through mini-projects and homework assignment. Students will understand the principles of the approximate methods in engineering mechanics. Students will learn how to use the basic numerical methods in analysing mechanics problem. Students will have the ability to conduct the engineering analyses by the software provided. Students will have an ability to analyze and report the solution from the analyses of engineering mechanics problem by use of numerical methods.

12 CE6006 Advanced Finite Element Method Prof Somsak Swaddiwudhipong Workload per Week: Pre-requisite: The primary objective of this module is to extend further the fundamentals and applications of finite element method to solve complex engineering problems. The students will acquire fundamental knowledge and computational skills to apply advanced finite element procedures to his research work. Topics covered include weak formulation and finite element concepts, degenerated beam and plate elements, nonlinear finite element formulation, finite element with size effect and mesh-free methods. Students will attend the hands-on sessions, complete a finite element project and present their work in the class. Student should be able to analyse advanced physical and/or engineering problems using finite element methods. Formulate nonlinear finite element equations based on weak formulation concept. Apply degenerated concept to formulate plate bending elements requiring C 0 Continuity requirements free from any locking phenomenon. Develop and implement C 0 finite elements capable of study problems with size effect. Aware of basic requirements and applications of mesh-free methods. Study independently to acquire further knowledge on other advances in finite element procedures
