1 5th Grade Reading Reading Response Notebook Guidelines Name: *Very important information. Please save this packet all year.

2 Dear Students, September, 2014 I love to read! It is the one thing that lets me travel to another world. A world which allows me to be a wizard, travel to a deserted island, be a hero, solve mysteries, and much more! Reading lets you be a part of someone else s world and even helps you learn more about yourself. This school year, you are going to write one response per week to show me what you are reading independently at school and at home. The following pages of this packet will give you more specific information about what to include in your packet. Your response should be a minimum of one (1) page in length and should be written in your Reading Response notebook (that s the purple one). Your notebook will be returned to you each week with a grade from 1 4 (see attached rubric) and comments written by me. Your Reading Response Notebook accounts for 30% of your overall grade. I am very excited about reading your responses. I can t wait to find out about the adventures you are having while you are reading your book. I want you to love reading as much as I do. 3 How to Write a Reading Response Notebook Entry! Step 1: Choose a book! NOW ask yourself, What part of the book stands out to me?? Step 2: Begin with your heading. Response Topic First and Last Name Class: (5A, 5B or 5C) Date Book Title Author Step 3: Write ONLY one or two sentences to summarize what is happening in your book. In this part of the book Step 4: (NOW, THIS IS WHERE THE MAJORITY OF WRITING COMES FROM) Choose ONE of the following topics for your entry: A. Theory B. Character Trait C. Character Change D. 5 Reading Response Notebook Topics Outline A. Theory Start by sharing your theory about a character, story events, etc. Include details from the text that support your theory. Explain why you think your theory is accurate. B. Character Trait Start by using a character trait to describe a character. Is this trait a negative or positive characteristic? Provide details from the story that support your description. Explain how your details support your character trait C. Character Change D. Topic: Important Event Mr. D Agostino 5A September 22, 2014 Frindle By Andrew Clements In this chapter, frindle has become a national news story and Bud Lawrence wants to make money off of the idea. Frindle becoming a known word around the nation is an important event. Because of this, Bud Lawrence is seeking approval from Nick s dad to make money. It seems like Nick s dad is done with the idea. He does not want to talk about frindle anymore. I wonder why he would still take the money from Bud Lawrence. Maybe, even though the father doesn t want to hear about any more problems, he wants the money for Nick s future. I predict that this money is going to have a major affect on the rest of the story. If the word frindle continues to be popular, Bud Lawrence is likely going to make a lot of money, which means that Nick will be making money too. I am wondering when Nick s dad will tell him about the money and how Nick will react. It might change him as a character.

Explain how your details support your character trait Topic: Character Trait Mr. D Agostino 5A September 22, 2014 Frindle By Andrew Clements At the beginning of the book, Frindle, we are introduced to our main character Nick Allen. Nick is a fifth grade student who doesn t think of himself as a good kid, a bad kid, or a smart kid. I think that Nick Allen is a unique character who is a little mischievous. This can be both positive and negative. For example, Nick stands out from his friends as someone with big ideas who can get away with causing some trouble. One time, Nick turned his classroom into a tropical island, and his teacher never found out who was behind it! Another time, Nick made a chirping noise to bother a teacher and someone else in his class was blamed! Each of these events shows that Nick likes to be sneaky and cause trouble. He never wants anyone to get hurt, but he likes to be funny. No one else in his school is like this, which makes him a unique character. I am wondering if the title of my book, Frindle, has something to do with one of Nick s schemes.

Topic: Relationship Mr. D Agostino 5A September 22, 2014 Frindle By Andrew Clements In the last chapter of Frindle, Nick receives a letter and dictionary from Mrs. Granger. In the dictionary is the word frindle. Something big that I have noticed in this chapter is a relationship change with Nick and Mrs. Granger. My prediction came true because Nick and Mrs. Granger are friends. For example, they both gave each other a Christmas gift. Another example of this is the letter Mrs. Granger wrote 10 years ago. All along she was hoping the word would end up in the dictionary. She did admit she was angry at first about frindle but then she saw it as a chance that Nick could learn from. I predict that now that Nick and Mrs. Granger are both older, they will stay friends because they both understand each other better now and why they acted the way they did 10 years ago.

Topic: Character Change Mr. D Agostino 5A September 22, 2014 Frindle By Andrew Clements In this chapter, Frindle has died down in the school and Nick has been less in the spotlight in 5 th grade. Something big that I have noticed in this chapter is character change in Nick. Throughout most of Frindle, Nick was very mischievous and caused trouble. For example, he turned his classroom into a tropical island. Another example is that he caused a national sensation by calling a pen a frindle. Now, it seems that something has changed in Nick. For example, when Nick came up with the brilliant idea of boycotting the cafeteria food, he kept the idea to himself. I think what caused this change is that the word frindle has calmed down and so has Nick. Or maybe, he s changed because he wants to see what is in the letter. Or could it be because he doesn t want to cause any more trouble.
