It is designed for staff making decisions on energy-related issues: business, government, crown corporations, and nonprofit companies. Required Courses The program includes nine required courses, as follows: Energy Management Planning PROP hours (0.7 CEUs/ILUs) Spot The Energy Savings PROP hours (0.7 CEUs/ILUs) Energy Monitoring PROP hours (0.7 CEUs/ILUs) Energy Management Info Systems PROP hours (0.7 CEUs/ILUs) Building Re-Commissioning PROP hours (0.7 CEUs/ILUs) Energy Management Financing Can be taken in any order PROP hours (0.7 CEUs/ILUs) Building Systems & Analysis PROP hours (3.6 CEUs/ILUs) Building Operations Management PROP hours (3.0 CEUs/ILUs) Business Communications GBSC hours (3.6 CEUs/ILUs) 2
3 Students may register in any individual course. The program provides a strong practical foundation in energy management, combined with practical knowledge of the operating aspects of commercial, residential, and industrial buildings. The energy courses will examine the principles and techniques of energy management planning, identifying energy consumption, monitoring, energy management information systems, re-commissioning buildings, and energy financing of projects. The other core courses will provide the students with knowledge and skills in building construction, building operations, and business communications.. See page 7 of this brochure to locate current information on course dates, fees, and registration procedures. Course descriptions begin on page 4. Also see the Course Planner on page 8 for courses offered by semester. Starting the Program Students may begin the program in any semester by registering in one of the available program courses. Registration is on a course-by-course basis each semester. There is no program application/admission procedure. The entrance requirement for any program course is completion of British Columbia Grade 12 or equivalent, or 19 years of age or older. Students should be able to read and write English at the Grade 12 level in order to successfully complete the assignments and reading requirements in each course. Completing the Program To earn the Energy Management Certificate, students must complete the required courses within a three-year period with a minimum grade of C (60%) in each course. Upon successful completion of all required courses, students may apply for the certificate at the Continuing Studies office. Class Times and Location Most courses hold classroom sessions on Saturdays. Some courses hold classroom sessions one evening per week over a 10 or 12 week period. All classes are held at the Langara College campus at 100 West 49 th Avenue in 3
4 Vancouver. Room numbers are posted on the room board next to the Continuing Studies office. Tuition and Books Tuition is paid on a course-by-course basis upon course registration at the start of each semester. The total tuition for all courses in the certificate program is $4,062. Tuition is subject to change. Tuition for individual courses is listed at the end of each course description (see below). Students taking more than one energy course will receive a 10% discount on further energy courses. The total cost for textbooks is approximately $158 (plus taxes as appropriate). Textbooks for the six energy courses are included in the tuition fee. Textbooks are available in the Langara College Bookstore at the start of each semester. The Bookstore telephone number is Bookstore information is also available on the College website ( Staff making energy-related decisions: Student Profile Employees of business, government, crown corporations, and non-profits involved in real estate Persons considering a career change to real estate while employed in another field Facility supervisors/managers and those who wish to advance in this field Graduates of the Langara Continuing Studies Property Management Certificate or the Social Housing Management Certificate or the Professional Building Manager Certificate who require advanced knowledge and skills in preparation for a management position or an executive position Energy managers Production supervisors Financial operations managers Maintenance managers Operating engineers Contractors and consultants Energy service providers Learning Outcomes The program curriculum provides a strong practical foundation in energy management, combined with practical knowledge of the operating aspects of commercial, residential, and industrial buildings. After successful completion of the certificate program, graduates will be able to: 4
5 Plan an effective energy strategy for an industrial, commercial, or institutional consumer Identify the cost effective energy upgrades possible in a facility Monitor the consumption of natural gas and electricity and report on progress of energy strategy Select and operate energy management information systems used in industry Launch, manage, and maximize the benefits of re-commissioning projects Analyze alternative financing techniques in light of risk, return, legal liability, inflation, and investment objectives Understand the construction of buildings and the systems operating in buildings Understand the operational risk and code requirements in operation of buildings Demonstrate communications skills acquired through an understanding of report preparation, workplace communications strategies, and dispute resolution techniques Course Descriptions Note on Course Scheduling: Courses normally run one day-long classroom session per week on a Saturdays. Business Communications, Building Systems Analysis, and Building Operations Management usually run on a series of evenings. For example, a 36-hour course may run over 12 weekly sessions at 3 hours per session. See page 7 to locate current scheduling information. Also see the Course Planner on page 8. Tuition is subject to change. PROP 1084 Energy Management Planning Learn how to create and implement an energy management plan for your organization. You will learn how to assemble an effective energy management team, identify and capitalize on immediate savings opportunities, access programs that can help take advantage of these savings, build a strategic framework for energy management solutions to identify characteristics of organization that are successful in managing energy. (7 hours) $428 PROP 1077 Spot the Energy Savings Want to know how to save money on fans, pumps, and boiler systems? How you can assess the benefits of energy efficiency? Identify opportunities that can help your organization save on energy use and reduce energy costs. The "Spot the Energy Savings" course will help you understand energy basics and identify upfront savings opportunities. The best place to begin to look for energy savings is where the energy is the most expensive at the point of end use. (7 hours) $430 PROP 1076 Energy Monitoring Why are your energy costs changing every month? This course will help the building/property manager detect changes in energy use, and identify, measure, 5
6 and verify savings from energy projects. You will have all the tools you need to improve the efficiency of buildings in your care. (7 hours) $430 PROP 1078 Energy Management Information Systems How will an energy management system benefit your building owner? This course will train the building manager/property manager in the use and benefits of installing an EMIS system in commercial/industrial buildings. This in turn will further equip the professional with tools to improve the efficiency of the buildings in their care. (7 hours) $430 PROP 1082 Building Re-Commissioning The Building Re-commissioning course introduces building owners and managers to the benefits and processes of building re-commissioning and teaches several key skills that are needed to launch, manage and maximize the benefits of re-commissioning projects. This course is not designed for recommissioning practitioners. (7 hours) $430 PROP 1083 Energy Efficiency Financing Learn how to build an effective finance-based business case for an energy efficiency project within your organization. You will learn how to analyze energy projects for net present value, internal rate of return and other financial parameters using Excel spreadsheets, identify energy and non-energy project benefits, calculate the financial value created by energy efficiency projects, and understand the basics of third-party financing mechanisms such as energy performance contracting. (7 hours) $428 PROP 1060 Building Systems & Analysis A thorough examination of building systems and equipment, and how to analyze and rectify problems in building systems. Topics include: building structure and envelope, mechanical systems and HVAC, maintenance and inspection schedules, report research, building audits, energy efficiency, and problemsolving techniques. Course content applies to residential and commercial properties, as well as institutional facilities such as hospitals and schools. (36 hours) $510 PROP 1044 Building Operations Management This course examines building operations from a management perspective. You will learn how buildings operate, how to develop a building maintenance plan, and how to improve operating efficiency and safety. Topics include: building systems and components, planning and risk management, best practices and benchmarks, tendering and purchasing, service contracts, capital upgrades, and project supervision. Instruction will focus on large residential and commercial buildings. (36 hours) $560 6
7 GBSC 1004 Business Communications This course introduces the fundamentals of interpersonal and group interaction including written, verbal, and non-verbal communication. The class will examine options in presentation preparation and delivery techniques, awareness of tone, consideration of audience, and selection of indirect and direct message organization.
