2 Professional Business Communications Extension Certificate Welcome to the Professional Business Communications Extension Certificate Program and thank you for choosing Mount Royal to assist you in your personal and professional development. Good communication skills are essential to workplace effectiveness and professional success. Whether you are an entry level or seasoned professional, this program can develop or improve communication skills and promote new workplace communication techniques. In order to receive your certificate you must complete all 3 required courses (45 hours), plus 30 hours of optional courses from the specialties listed below. This program may be completed within 2 semesters but must be completed within (3) years. Program Learning Outcomes The objective of the Professional Business Communications program is to provide an understanding of the Business Communications field and the knowledge and skills required of a business communication professional. Upon completion of this program, you will: recognize and further develop essential knowledge and skills to become an effective communicator in the workplace or professional environments apply writing skills to prepare and present professional looking documents for various audiences, including , reports, proposals, letters or other business correspondence demonstrate speaking and presentation skills to deliver clear and persuasive messages use techniques and strategies to skillfully engage, interact with and lead others The Program REQUIRED COURSES: Effective Business Writing The ability to write clearly and effectively for business is increasingly important in the information era. Explore the requirements for various business writing applications such as reports, proposals and letters of intent, as well as effective composition, revision and editing skills in this interactive, practical course. Focus your message for specific audiences and occasions and receive instructor feedback. Professional Business Presentations A business presentation can be one of the most pivotal and most terrifying points in an individual s career. More than public speaking, a business presentation calls upon the speaker s ability to work with ideas, audio-visual support, varied venues and diverse audiences to communicate a powerful and effective business message. Further your personal and professional goals by learning the tools and techniques of great presentations in this hands-on, interactive course. Effective Workplace Communication Discover practical techniques for improving communication skills, including communicating more clearly, active listening, non-verbal communication and electronic communication will give you a solid foundation in area of management development. OPTIONAL COURSES Choose a minimum of 30 hours, from various specialty areas. 3 Public Speaking The Art of Public Speaking Public Relations and Social Media Introduction to Public Relations Introduction to Social Media for Business Course Materials Each course in the certificate requires a student manual. All registered students will access course materials through a Blackboard class website. You will gain access to the Blackboard class website within 4 working days before the start date of the course. At that time, you will receive a welcome with instructions on how to log in. The manuals are continually updated in order to ensure that students are working with the latest information. Textbook (Required) Effective Business Writing Course: HBR Guide to Better Business Writing, Bryan A. Garner, available at the BookStore Supplementary resources/books may be recommended in each course at an additional cost. Completion Requirements The program consists of 3 required courses, and 30 hours of optional courses. All program requirements must be completed within three years. After successful completion of the required courses you are eligible to receive an extension certificate. To receive your certificate, you must complete the application to graduate form. To download a copy of the application, visit or phone to request an application via or mail. Course Evaluations Course Evaluations are conducted at the end of each course. Students are encouraged at any time, to discuss any aspect of the course with their instructor or the Program Coordinator. Your feedback allows the University to make continuous improvements to the program curriculum and delivery. Course Cancellation Mount Royal University reserves the right to cancel any course in which a minimum required registration is not achieved. Students will be notified by telephone if a cancellation occurs. Program Policies Course Withdrawals 1. Withdrawal (from a course 4 business days prior to the start date) To be eligible for a refund, a written request for withdrawal from a course must be received (excluding Saturday, Sunday, and statutory holidays). Withdrawals may be submitted by: fax: or in person at CE Registration Office on MRU campus

4 Please quote: student ID number, CRN (Course Reference Number), course name, course start/end dates, full legal name, date of birth, address and phone number. All withdrawal refunds are subject to an administration fee of 10% of course tuition (max. $50). Refunds may take up to two weeks to process. 2. Withdrawal (from a course that is in progress) A student may request in writing to the Registration office, or the Continuing Education program area, withdrawal from a course up until 67% (or 2/3 s) of the completion of that course in order to receive a "W" grade. Requests received by CE Registration must be passed on to the program area for approval first to ensure they are received before the 67% (or 2/3 s) completion point of the course. The program area will notify CE Registration in writing of their decision. Note: No refunds are associated with such withdrawal requests. If the request comes in after the 67% (or 2/3 s) completion point of the course, permission for the grade change will be at the discretion of the Program Director. 3. Failed Courses If a student fails a course, he/she must repeat the same course. The failed course remains a permanent part of the student s record at Mount Royal University, regardless of whether he/she passes the same course on a subsequent attempt. 4. Accessibility It is a student's responsibility to request academic accommodation. If you are a student with a disability who may require academic accommodation and have not registered with Accessibility Services, please contact their office at You must be registered with Accessibility Services to access academic accommodations. Course Policies 1. Attendance / Participation Students are encouraged to actively participate in online class discussions. Participation is essential for successfully completing the course. Students must complete all course assignments with a minimum final grade of 63% to pass the course. (see course schedule) Students with serious medical or domestic afflictions verified by a physician or medical professional may negotiate with the instructor an alternate method of completing the course. Students should contact the instructor immediately if they cannot keep pace with the course schedule or foresee submitting assignments late. Decisions regarding extensions are at the sole discretion of your instructor. 2. Due Dates Students who fall significantly behind in the course will not pass the course. The instructor will monitor and participate in the class discussion activities and track the completion of individual assignments to assess your final grade. Students must complete assignments as provided in the course schedule. If you require an extension, please contact your instructor as soon as the issue arises. Decisions regarding extensions are at the sole discretion of your instructor. 3. Course Evaluation Please complete the Course and Instructor Evaluation survey as mentioned to you by the instructor during the last class

5 Website Access to Unofficial Transcripts & Grades To access your transcripts you will require your student ID number. Grades and unofficial transcripts You may view and print your unofficial transcripts and grades through MyMRU. ( 1. Log in 2. Click on the Online Services link. 3. Click on the Student tab. 4. Click on the Student Records & Transcripts link. 5. Click on Unofficial Academic Transcript. 6. and Web Transcripts are already selected in the drop-down menu. Click on Submit. Final grades will be available on MyMRU within ten (10) working days of the course completion date. If you require a grade notification because you do not have access to the internet, please call Mount Royal Registration at Grades cannot be given over the phone by any University or program personnel. Student Expectations and the Code of Student Conduct Students are expected to familiarize themselves with the information contained on the following web pages: The FAQs webpage contains policies that are common to all credit-free students and covers topics such as: Privacy Final Grade Appeal Policy/Procedure Grades and unofficial transcripts Graduating Tax receipts (T2202A) The Code of Student Conduct is a comprehensive account of the University s expectations of its students with respect to academic dishonesty and non-academic misconduct. It also guarantees the University s obligations to its students and provides a detailed account of the rights of students under the Code. Finally, it describes the procedures for conducting hearings and appeals and the sanctions related to infractions of the Code. Academic Dishonesty Mount Royal is committed to the principle of academic integrity, which, as described by the Center for Academic Integrity, is grounded in the belief in the fundamental values of honesty, trust, fairness, respect and responsibility. From these values flow principles of behavior that enable academic communities to translate ideals into action 1. The University expects that all of its members will honor these principles in maintaining the academic standards and integrity of the University community. APA Formatting/Avoiding Plagiarism All students are expected to follow American Psychological Association (APA) Publication Manual for referencing and formatting of their assignments. The 6th edition of APA standards must be used when completing all assignments for this course. APA guidelines can be accesses through the Library link located under the Information section of the Blackboard site. Library: Cite Sources: MRU Guide to APA Documentation in Research Papers Plagiarism refers to a form of academic dishonesty occurring when an individual claims that a piece of work has been authored by him or herself when indeed the work has been created by another individual. There are sanctions for plagiarism. Learn more in the Guide to Avoiding Plagiarism

6 Non-Academic Misconduct Mount Royal expects that its students will behave in a manner, which does not seriously disrupt or adversely affect Mount Royal or its educational mission. Behaviour which is subject to disciplinary action under the Code includes violations of established civil and criminal statutes; conduct that threatens the safety or well-being of members of the University community; and any other behaviour that seriously and adversely affects the University s students or employees, its property or its reputation. The Code of Student Conduct is available through the Office of the Dean, Faculty of and Extension. Harassment or Discrimination Sexual harassment and other forms of discrimination are unacceptable at Mount Royal.
