3 GUIDELINES FOR MBA6995 INTERNSHIP GENERAL INFORMATION: The Internship provides an opportunity for students to strength their theoretical training with practical work experience. The Internship is normally completed during the summer months. There are two types of Internships: i. Domestic (completed in Canada) and ii. International Evaluation of the Internship is based on an assessment of the student's performance by his or her supervisor and the sponsor. Students who enrol in the Internship will normally be full-time students (except in the case of International Internships) and will have completed courses equivalent to the first year of the MBA program. Exceptions to these requirements such as part-time students doing Domestic Internships in organizations other than the ones they work in can be made by the Assistant Dean - Graduate Programs, given the student's background, work experience and the completion of courses deemed appropriate for the proposed Internship. The Internship must be approved by the Assistant Dean - Graduate Programs in advance and will normally involve 400 hours of work at the site of the Internship. The Internships may be initiated by the Assistant Dean - Graduate Programs or by the student themselves. In the case of a student initiating an Internship, the Assistant Dean - Graduate Programs shall supply the student with a letter of introduction from the Faculty of Business Administration. The tasks performed in the Internship should be consistent with the MBA curriculum and should utilize the student's expertise gained to date in the MBA program. REQUIREMENTS FOR INTERNSHIP: The registration forms are attached to this literature. Upon completion, these forms must be returned to the MBA office (SH270) for approval and registration. On-line registration is not available for MBA6995. International interns may be required, at the discretion of the Assistant Dean - Graduate Programs, to take an additional course as preparation for the International Internship (MBA6323: International Marketing Management). INTERNATIONAL AND DOMESTIC INTERNSHIPS: As a three credit hour course, the Internship requires an academic effort comparable to that of an Independent Study course. The following are required from the intern: A rigorous academic paper on the issues related to the tasks performed. A grade for this course will not be recorded on the transcript until a bound copy of this paper has been submitted to the MBA office. The written paper should follow the format below: i. An executive summary which contains a discussion of the institution and the position held, tasks performed and some comments on their respective importance. ii. iii. iv. Definition and description of the management problem A literature review related to the problem An analysis of the management problem identified in the organization which the student felt contributed to their learning experience.

4 v. A conclusion section which will recommend solutions to the problem identified based on the literature review and the student's experience in the organization. During their Internship, students should record and analyze their observations about the management problem of interest in order to facilitate the preparation of the Internship Report. The Internship Report is due within three weeks after the completion of the Internship period. An extension may be granted by the Assistant Dean - Graduate Programs upon written request from the student. RESPONSIBILITIES OF AN INTERNSHIP SUPERVISOR: The supervisor responsibilities: provide guidance to the student regarding the literature review, the analysis of the management problem and other related matters, evaluate the student's progress during the Internship, and evaluate the final copy of the Internship Report and submit a pass or fail grade to the Assistant Dean - Graduate Programs. RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE ASSISTANT DEAN - GRADUATE PROGRAMS: The Assistant Dean - Graduate Programs shall: provide information to the students as it concerns to the Internship program; normally in the early fall of each year, ensure compliance with the regulations, maintain contact with the sponsoring agencies and supervisors, ensure the pedagogical value of the Internship and help the student to establish his or her first contacts with the supervisor. DISCONTINUATION OF AN INTERNSHIP: An Internship may be discontinued if the student: does not conform to the work habits of the sponsoring organization, withdraws from the MBA program, is expelled from the MBA program, or for any other reason deemed appropriate by the supervisor and/or the Assistant Dean - Graduate Programs. The student shall have an opportunity to be heard at a meeting with the supervisor, Assistant Dean - Graduate Programs, and a representation by the sponsoring organization. August 2013

The confidentiality and ethical considerations which need to be checked are covered in Section 5 of the MBA6996 Project Reports: Course Outline and Student Guidelines. Students are strongly encouraged to attach supporting documents, particularly a letter of consent, from the participating organization(s) or individual(s) and questionnaire if applicable and ready.
