3 DAVID GAME COLLEGE Established in 1974, David Game College is one of the most successful independent co-educational colleges in London. We specialise in preparing students for university entry, by providing an extensive range of GCSE and A level courses and focusing on examination success. We also run our own University Foundation Programme and offer courses in English as a Foreign Language. We pride ourselves on our flexibility, and specialise in providing individual courses of study tailored to each student s particular needs and preferences. Students choose David Game College because of the quality of teaching and the high level of individual attention and support they receive here. At David Game College we take great pride in our ability to cater for students of all educational abilities and backgrounds. Our tutors have high expectations, so all students including the most able are stretched intellectually and encouraged to aim high. If students are capable of gaining entry to the most competitive degree courses and the most prestigious universities, they have an excellent chance of being successful here. The College is located in Central London, in the fashionable area of Notting Hill, where it occupies large, modern premises with excellent facilities. We have a number of specialist classrooms, all well resourced with state-of-the-art facilities to support teaching and learning, including newly refurbished science laboratories. The David Game College library provides students with a quiet place to work, and contains reference books, past examination papers and university prospectuses. It is also equipped with desktop computers. The College also has a common room and canteen, where students can go to relax, meet friends, enjoy a game of chess, or watch the news via Sky and the BBC. Students can eat their own snacks here, or buy hot and cold drinks and food. For those living away from home, David Game College can offer supervised accommodation and a relaxed atmosphere in which students are treated as adults. Resident staff will ensure that they are happy, safe and well-motivated. This includes the monitoring of their attendance and progress, which parents are also encouraged to follow through our dedicated intranet portal. David Game College attracts students from many countries and was given Highly Trusted Status (HTS) by the UK Visa & Immigration (UKVI) which requires us continually to adapt our admissions and monitoring procedures. As well as our international students, David Game has a growing number of British students who choose us for the quality of teaching and mature, disciplined but relaxed atmosphere. The quality of teaching, Pupils achievements and Pupils behaviour and personal development were described as outstanding in the 2013 Ofsted inspection. 4 UNIVERSITY FOUNDATION PROGRAMME The University Foundation Programme has come to be established as one of the oldest and most well respected foundation years in the United Kingdom, providing an entry level qualification for undergraduate study accepted by 100 British universities. Over the last few years alone, alumni UFP students have progressed on to studying a wide variety of competitive courses at universities such as Bristol, Manchester, LSE, SOAS, Queen Mary, Bath, City (CASS Business School) and King s College London. The reputable and academic nature of our course has allowed us to develop an extensive network with top universities all over the UK, including formal articulation agreements with 10 in particular. As we are a nonstandard entry qualification that is externally examined, universities often look at our students favourably as it does not affect their rankings, trusting that the calibre of students we produce are fully prepared for their first year of Higher Education. Through our syllabus and teaching style, students are thoroughly equipped with the tools to exceed at top universities. We have two intakes each academic year: September - June or January August; both allow students to join university the following academic year. We also offer this course at Bath Academy, our sister college. UFP Course Structure The course can lead to almost all degrees within the areas of Engineering, Sciences, Business, Accounting, Law, Social Sciences, Pharmacy, International Relations, Art & Design, Architecture, and Mathematics. The University Foundation Programme cannot prepare a student for Dentistry, Medicine or Veterinary Science degrees but can be used for Medical related programmes such as Biomedical Sciences, Genetics, Biochemistry and Pharmacy. Students take 6 modules over the duration of the course; 3 minor and 3 major. The 3 minor modules, Core Mathematics, ICT and English, are compulsory for all students and are completed over the first term. The 3 major modules are related to the degree of study and are undertaken in the second and third terms. Class sizes will vary between students aged between 16 and 23. Students are assessed throughout the course, sitting progress tests, end of term examinations and submitting coursework for each subject. Students apply to university through the UCAS system and will endeavour to have it submitted by the end of the first term. During this time, students will receive full support and guidance of staff as they fill in their UCAS applications and make the crucial choice and decision as to what course they wish to study and what institutions to apply to. We also run a university fair twice a year, inviting 20 or so universities to visit the college and meet with our students. Here students can find out more about their courses and discuss with admissions staff personally. 4 P a g e

7 Extended UFP Past experience has taught us that some students need a little bit longer and a little bit extra to reach their goals. Our UFP Extended course is designed in such a way to give these students the time and space to do so. The Extended Foundation allows academically weaker students to benefit from having a four terms of study as opposed to the traditional three. This extra term provides students with the opportunity to improve their Mathematics, IT and English skills, introducing them to basic subject and topic materials necessary to succeed. The UFPe runs from July June and September August. Both allow students to start university the following academic year. The Art & Design, Architecture and Interior Design Extended Foundations act similarly, enabling students to work on particular skills as well as introducing them to elements they may have never covered before. This course will provide students with the ample time necessary to put together an extensive portfolio in time for university interviews later that academic year. Who is the UFPe course for? Students with an IELTS score of 4.5 or 5.0 Students who may need to work on improving a particular IELTS discipline Students who have basic Mathematics foundations Students who have not been taught academic subjects in English Students who would benefit from having more time to adjust to the foreign environment and living independently Who will benefit from the Architecture, Art and Design, or Interior Design UFPe? Students who do not have a portfolio Students who need the time and opportunity to develop a particular Art/Design skill 7 P a g e

We can now issue unconditional offers and a CAS for students with pending results. This is reserved for students who have proven to be academically strong. They will need to take an entrance test in a secure location such as the British Council to demonstrate they are suitable for the course. This is ideal for students whose results are released late but want to join our September intake. KAE is accredited by the British Council, meeting the high standards of quality set out. KAE is also the English language department of David Game College. Some come to Kensington Academy of English (KAE) to study only English; others study English before or at the same time as taking academic courses at David Game College. Our Courses We believe that learning has to be exciting and interesting in order to be successful. All of our teachers work hard to help students achieve their English language goals in a stimulating and fun environment. Students are particularly encouraged to develop their confidence in spoken English, helped by the fact that English is the only language used in the classroom, as well as by the provision of a free weekly conversation class. All our courses are syllabus-based and focus on grammar, plus the four key language elements: reading, writing, listening and speaking. A placement test is given on arrival to assess level. Homework is given regularly to encourage self-study. At the end of each language level, a progress test is taken and must be passed before entry to the next level. 37 TIER 4 STUDENT VISA This advice has been put together in conjunction with Tier 4 Sponsor Guidance as of October It is up to you, however, to ensure that you check any updates on the UKVI (Home Office UK Visas) website. As it currently stands, non-home/eu students will need to apply for a Tier 4 student visa to join the UFP, A level or GCSE courses. Only institutions with an HTS license, such as David Game College, will be able to sponsor students. Students must meet the full requirements of the immigration rules and have 40 points in total under the Tier 4 points-based system. These points come from: 1. Having a valid Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies from a Tier 4 Sponsor (30 points) 2. Having enough money to cover course fees and monthly living (maintenance) costs (10 points) There are two student categories under the Tier 4 system: Tier 4 General student for students coming to the UK for post-16 education Tier 4 Child student for children between 4 and 17 years old SECURE ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEST (SELT) General English, GCSE, A Level and Foundation Courses: Since August 2010, Students who come under a Tier 4 General visa will need to have taken a Secure English Language Test as outlined by the UKBA such as the IELTS, TOEFL or PTE and met the minimum B1 CEFR requirements in order to meet the visa regulations. For the IELTS this is a minimum of 4.0 in each section; for TOEFL this is Listening 9, Reading 4, Writing 13, Speaking 16. For a full list of Secure English Language Tests approved by the UKVI please visit: Child Students who are under 18 and who are applying for a Tier 4 Child visa do not need to take a Secure English Language Test to prove their English level. We still need to show that we are confident that the student s proficiency meets the level required to successfully pass our course. We will do this by: 1. Assessing high school qualifications (such as the grade in English) 2. Inviting them to undertake a SKYPE interview with us or 3. Asking them to sit our own David Game College English test at a secure location such as the British Council, the Nigerian Turkish International College in Nigeria, or Elm Gostar Kaveh in Iran. 37 P a g e
38 Exemption The following students are also exempt from the SELT requirement for their visa: Students who are nationals of majority English speaking countries: Antigua and Barbuda, Australia, The Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Canada, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, New Zealand, St Kitts and Nevis, St Lucia, St Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago, and the United States of America. Students who have successfully completed a course as a Tier 4 Child student (or under the student rules in force before March 2009 where the student was granted permission to stay in the UK when they were under 18) that lasted at least 6 months and ended within two years of the date the sponsor assigned the CAS. The Confirmation for Acceptance of Studies (CAS) The CAS is not an actual certificate or paper document but is a virtual document submitted on the UKVI sponsor management system. We will provide the student with a number that is linked to this document, showing the UKVI that we will be sponsoring them. For the purpose of formalities, we will send a student a CAS statement with all the details that we have submitted online alongside their CAS number. They cannot apply for their visa without this number as it is worth 30/40 points. In order for the student to be issued a CAS the student must have: 1. An unconditional offer (and returned any forms requested such as terms and conditions and/or guardian form) 2. Sent us a copy of their final high school results (unless exempt see below) 3. Sent us a copy of their passport 4. Sent us a copy of their IELTS/TOEFL/PTE certificate unless exempt 5. Paid their deposit 6. Sent us a copy of their bank statements that they will be submitting with their application Once we have received all of the above, we will aim to have the CAS issued within 24 hours. Progression As from July 2011, the UKVI now stipulated that all students applying for further leave to remain must demonstrate academic progression. This must be stated by the HTS license holder on the CAS, explaining why this student has been accepted and how they demonstrate progression. Progression is generally defined as going on to the next level of study for example a student who has completed an English course and has met IELTS requirements for A levels or UFP demonstrates progression by going on to study the A level programme or the UFP. Students may, however, transfer to another institution for a course at the same academic level once if they have not completed their current course. We may not be able to accept a student who has completed the same course elsewhere or a course at the same level e.g. the student completed the full A level course (both AS and A2) and wants to study the UFP. All information must be disclosed to the admissions officer in order to discuss the student s case properly, including all periods of stay in the UK accounted for in detail. If you do not provide us this information, we may refuse to issue a CAS or they may be subject to visa refusal. 38 P a g e
39 Bank Statements: What money is needed by a student? A student must have enough money to support him/herself during their studies in the UK. Students are asked to provide evidence of this with their visa application through a bank statement, bank letter, or if they are a sponsored through a sponsorship letter from their sponsor. Owing to visa refusals being predominantly caused by insufficient monetary evidence and subsequent advice we have received from the UKVI, it is now college policy to check bank statements before a CAS is issued. The UKVI are continuously updating a list of the financial institutions that they deem unreliable in each country and therefore will not accept evidence from. Students will need to have the outstanding course fees (after paying a deposit) + maintenance/living expenses held in an account for a consecutive 28 day period (finishing on the date of the closing balance) ending no more than 1 month before they submit their visa application. The balance must not drop below this required amount on any day. If the student is studying in: Inner London students will require 1020 per month (General Student) and 920 (Child Student) for living costs (David Game College comes under this) Outer London or anywhere else in the UK (e.g. Bath Academy) students will require 820 per month (General Student) and 715 (Child Student) for living costs If students do not have an established presence studying in the UK, they will be asked to show 9 months maintenance ( 9180) + the remaining tuition fee in their account. Students with an established presence studying in the UK, even if they are applying from outside the UK, will be asked to show a minimum of 2 months maintenance + the remaining tuition fee. Please note that: All evidence of money must be held in cash funds (current or savings accounts even when notice must be given), a government or financial sponsorship. They do not accept other accounts such as shares, bonds, overdrafts, credit cards or pension funds, regardless of notice period. If the statement is an online print out, they will need to get their bank to sign, stamp or issue a letter to verify its authenticity. If the statement is not in English, an official translation must be provided. If the student does not have an account, they can provide their parents or legal guardian s statement/bank letter. They will need to provide a letter of permission from their parents/legal guardian stating that they give the student permission to use their funds to study and provide their birth certificate or court document (if it is their legal guardian) reaffirming their relationship to the bank account holder. Any money already paid to the sponsor i.e. course fees will be put onto the course as proof of payment. If students do not meet these regulations, they will be asked to attain a new statement. More information can be found online on the UKVI website: antguidance.pdf 39 P a g e
40 What documents will they need to submit with their visa? Anything that is on the CAS they will need to submit unless stated otherwise, typically this will be: Passport High School certificates/transcripts Students who have been given an unconditional place with pending results and have sat an entrance test will not need to submit their results SELT qualification e.g. IELTS/TOEFL/PTE unless stated otherwise If the student is applying for a Tier 4 Child visa they will need to provide a letter of consent from their parents/legal guardian agreeing to their travel and living arrangements. If they have a guardian they will need a letter of consent confirming this care arrangement. If a student is 16 or 17 years old and is applying for a Tier 4 General visa will need to supply a letter of consent from their parents giving them permission to travel and live independently. If they have a guardian they will need a letter of consent confirming this care arrangement. If any of these documents are not in English, an official translation must be supplied with details of the registered, official translator/company. All documents must be originals, copies will not be accepted. Are there any exemptions? Students who are nationals of a low-risk country/nationality will be able to qualify for Tier 4 Student differentiation arrangements, enabling them to apply through a stream-line application process. Alongside the CAS number, they will only need to submit their passport. The UKVI may still request all other documents (bank statements, IELTS, high school certificates etc) and if the student does not provide these within the stated time frame, they will face refusal. The following nationals qualify as low-risk : Argentina Australia Brunei Canada Chile Croatia Hong Kong Japan New Zealand Oman Qatar Singapore South Korea Taiwan Trinidad and Tobago United Arab Emirates United States of America British National Overseas What if the student is extending their visa from within the UK? The student will only be able to apply for his/her visa if their current visa expires within no more than 28 days of their next course starting. Students will have to follow all the procedures above to be issued a CAS. Once they have submitted their visa they may start the course and will need to provide proof of that their visa is being processed. This is done either by bringing in the postal receipt from sending their application by post or any documentation after they have had an appointment if they choose this method. They will need to bring in any correspondence with the UKVI whilst they wait for their application outcome. Further information can be found out on the UKVI website: antguidance.pdf 40 P a g e
41 ARRIVAL Students will be asked to inform us of their arrival date when they have received their visa. Students who receive their visa but fail to enrol on the course within the enrolment period of 10 days of expected arrival date will be reported to the UKVI. Students will be requested to bring the following for registration/enrolment: 1. Passport and visa 2. Original high school transcripts/certificates where possible 3. Original IELTS/TOEFL/PTE certificate 4. 2 passport sized photos At enrolment they will receive their timetables, student handbooks and other relevant information relating to the course. VISITOR VISA If a student wants to come to the UK in order to do a short course of study during their visit, they can apply to do so as a student visitor. The period in which they intend to be in the UK must not exceed six months. However, English language students wishing to attend solely English language courses will be able to apply for a student visitor visa allowing them to stay for up to 11 months. The extended visitor visa will only be available to applicants outside the UK. If they are a non-visa-national that does not normally need a visa to study for up to 6 months, they must apply for the extended visa if they wish to take a longer English language course. They must be aged 18 or over, and must have been accepted on a course of study provided by an HTS Sponsor such as David Game College.
