Children and staff have established good relationships within a short space of time; as a result, children are happy and settled at the nursery. Systems of assessment and planning are very well organised, enabling staff to effectively plan activities that reflect children's individual needs. Communication is strong, enabling staff, parents and other professionals to share information effectively. It is not yet outstanding because Systems to practise the emergency evacuation drills, relating to all of the halls used in the setting on different days of the week are not fully established.
2 Inspection report: Barn Owls Nursery School, 29/11/ of 10 Information about this inspection Inspections of registered early years provision are: scheduled at least once in every inspection cycle the current cycle ends on 31 July 2016 scheduled more frequently where Ofsted identifies a need to do so, for example where provision was previously judged inadequate brought forward in the inspection cycle where Ofsted has received information that suggests the provision may not be meeting the legal requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage or where assessment of the provision identifies a need for early inspection prioritised where we have received information that the provision is not meeting the requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage and which suggests children may not be safe scheduled at the completion of an investigation into failure to comply with the requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage. The provision is also registered on the compulsory part of the Childcare Register. This report includes a judgment about compliance with the requirements of that register. Inspection activities The inspector observed activities throughout the nursery and outside play area. The inspector had discussions with parents, staff and children. The inspector undertook joint observations with staff and sampled children's assessment files. 3 Inspection report: Barn Owls Nursery School, 29/11/ of 10 Full report Information about the setting Barn Owls Nursery School registered in 2013 and is privately owned. The nursery school operates from church premises in Southfields, within the London Borough of Wandsworth. It has use of three rooms on different days of the week. Children have access to an enclosed patio for outdoor play, as well as the church gardens. The nursery school is open from 9.15am to 12.30pm from Monday to Friday during term-time only. It is registered on the Early Years Register and the compulsory part of the Childcare Register. There are four staff who work at the setting, all of whom have relevant qualifications. Three staff are qualified teachers. There are currently 13 children on roll in the early years age range. Children attend for a variety of sessions. The nursery school supports a few children who are learning to speak English as an additional language. What the setting needs to do to improve further To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should: develop further systems for staff and children to practise fire evacuation procedures, regarding all of the halls used by the nursery. Inspection judgements How well the early years provision meets the needs of the range of children who attend Children benefit from a very well-organised educational programme, which provides a good balance of adult-led and child-initiated activities. Staff are meticulous in their planning of activities. They make accurate observations of children's progress and use their assessments of children's learning needs to aid their planning. They complete daily evaluations and adapt the plans to meet children's needs. This means that the cycle of observation, assessment and planning is clearly embedded in staff practice. Children enjoy looking at their own progress folders that show photos and samples of their work, with codes that link to the areas of learning. Staff have also made photographic displays and folders that relate to each area of learning, so that children and parents can easily reflect on the activities that children participate in. Staff keep parents well informed about their children's progress through regular feedback and daily home communication books. They also complete the progress checks with parents when their children are aged between two and three years old. Staff complete a detailed record of children's progress, which is shared with parents at this time, enabling them to add comments to form a consolidated picture of children's abilities and learning needs. Staff make excellent use of time so that children participate in a broad variety of activities. Purposeful adult-led activities extend children's learning well; for example children enjoy the group time where staff introduce how the role play area has changed to the post

They show children wrapped-up objects, enabling them to develop their language skills as they talk about the shapes and size, and guess what is inside before they take turns to open them. Cooking activities are also very well-organised as staff encourage children to use their senses and explore how the ingredients feel, smell and taste, and describe what they look like. Staff successfully encourage children to use mathematical language as they measure the ingredients, and support their social skills as they take turns with the mixing bowls. Children use a variety of construction sets, puzzles and Montessori equipment to develop their mathematical skills. They enjoy building towers of bricks and discuss shapes and sizes with staff. Children develop their literacy skills as they enjoy using books independently. They also make their own versions of familiar books with staff. Children actively join in with key words at story time and enjoy songs and rhymes with actions, developing their language skills. Staff give high priority to developing children's physical skills during free play and adult-led activities. Children enjoy using wheeled toys and show good coordination as they throw and kick balls, for example. Children use electronic toys such as talking books where they record sounds and play them back. They also develop their awareness of technology while using the laptop with staff. Staff provide an exciting range of art and craft materials for children to explore and create their own pictures. Staff also match the activities to children's interests; for example they add cars and trains to the paints so that children who like playing with cars can make patterns and prints with the wheels. Children are making good progress as staff are attentive, actively respond to their interests and extend their learning needs effectively. The contribution of the early years provision to the well-being of children Children and staff have good relationships. Children happily approach staff during play or if they need support. They work cooperatively and show a good awareness of the daily routines. Children are supported well by staff in learning to take care of their environment and help to tidy away toys after use. They are very well-behaved and show an understanding of expectations of their behaviour. For example, during adult-led activities such as cooking, children leave the activity at any time they wish, showing an understanding that this is their free-play time. During the group times, such as story and song times, children sit, listen well and actively join in without leaving the group session. These well-managed routines, which are gently guided by staff, support children in getting ready to move on to school. In addition, children are developing good self-care skills as they pour their own drinks and cut their own fruit at snack time. Staff also encourage children to put on their own coats before they go outside. Children take turns and share during play, developing their social skills and firm friendships as they play together. Staff provide healthy snacks and know about children's individual dietary needs. Children participate in weekly cooking activities so that they can learn about different foods, including foods that relate to a variety of cultural festivals. For example they made their own food for Bonfire Night, and tasted foods and used coloured rice to make Rangoli patterns to celebrate Diwali.
5 Inspection report: Barn Owls Nursery School, 29/11/ of 10 Staff show high regard to promoting children's good health and well-being through a broad variety of physical play activities. For example, children benefit from free access to outside play, so that they can play in the fresh air at any time. They use a wide variety of climbing equipment and wheeled toys to develop their physical control. Staff provide gym sessions and yoga, and children also benefit from activities with additional teachers where they play football and ball games, and enjoy music and movement in the drama and dance session. Children are supported well in learning about good personal hygiene. They know to wash their hands before snacks and staff work closely with parents to support children in developing their toilet training routines. The effectiveness of the leadership and management of the early years provision Staff have a good understanding of the requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage. Good systems are in place to help safeguard children and protect them from harm. All staff have completed the local authority safeguarding training. Safeguarding procedures are in place so that staff can take prompt action if they have any concerns regarding children's welfare. Appropriate vetting and suitability checks are completed for all staff, including the additional teachers. Children's welfare is also safeguarded through the use of documentation as staff keep accurate records of attendance for children, staff and visitors, along with records of any accidents or medication. Staff complete thorough risk assessments relating to the use of the premises and all activities that the children participate in. Children learn about safety through daily routines and they have just been introduced to the emergency evacuation drill. However, the group uses different halls within the setting on different days of the week and systems for children and staff to practise the various emergency evacuation routines are not fully established. Staff provide a stimulating learning environment, with lots of photos and posters of children during play that reflect all areas of learning. Children also benefit from an environment that is rich with print, with lots of words and numbers displayed indoors and outside. Toys and resources are well organised, enabling children to make choices and develop their independent learning skills. Staff provide a comprehensive educational programme, which is tailored to meet children's individual learning needs. Staff make very good use of the time that children attend. As a result, children are purposefully engage in play and are making good progress in all areas of their learning and development. Staff actively work with parents and other professionals. They have established links with other settings that children attend so that information can be shared effectively. Staff also work closely with parents and other professionals to identify any additional learning needs. Staff devise individual programmes to ensure high levels of support are offered to children before any formal stages of assessment are initiated. Children who are learning to speak English as an additional language are supported well. Staff ask parents for key words in their home language and parents have visited the nursery to read stories to children in their home language. This supports children's understanding of diversity and promotes their self-esteem. Staff show high regard to sharing information with parents. They provide daily feedback on all events of the day and share information in the children's

Staff have devised a broad range of policies and procedures that are available to parents and also offer a welcome pack with information about the nursery school. Parents spoken to during the inspection stated that they are very happy with the quality of the service. They feel that staff are very supportive and work with them to help their children's development. Parents feel that the staff are 'wonderful and nurturing' and that their children are very happy at the nursery. Staff have established good systems of evaluation. They have a short meeting at the end of each session to evaluate the educational programme and events of the day. They have completed a thorough and accurate evaluation relating to all aspects of the setting, highlighting their strengths and their priorities for improvements. In addition, they work closely with the local authority advisors and other professionals to improve their practice. Systems for induction, supervision and appraisal are in place so that staff can effectively monitor their performance. Overall the setting shows a strong capacity to improve as they have made a very good start to their service within a short space of time.
