BADMINTON 1. Basic Rules. Badminton is a game for two or four people. Players use rackets and they have to hit a shuttle over a high net. Badminton is played on a small court, usually indoors and there are lines on the court to show different playing areas. 2. The court. The size of the court depends on the way we are playing (singles or doubles) 3. Score system Every time you win a rally, you get a point. Starting from zero, the first person to reach 21 points wins the game. After winning a game that player starts serving the next game. A match is the best of three games: you win the match by winning two games. So a match could last either two or three games. You have to win the game by at least two points. If the score reaches 20 20, then 21 points are no longer enough to win the game. You need to win two points in a row, one after the other. If you reach 30 29, however, you ve won the game. 30 points is the upper limit. Whenever you win a rally, you also get the next serve. So if your opponent was serving in the last rally, the serve passes to you; if you were serving, you keep on serving. Remember that you have two service courts: one on the right, and one on the left. When the server s score is an even number, he serves from the right service court. When his score is an odd number, he serves from the left service court.
3. Service. The server and the receiver should stand diagonally inside the service zone. The shuttle should remain below your waist when the racket hits the shuttle. The shuttle must go diagonally. In case the server makes a mistake he losses the point. FOREHAND SERVICE BACKHAND SERVICE In case we play doubles we change the server after every point. Do not forget the even and odd points rule. 4. Technics Ready position. Your ready position is the stance and position that you want to reach before your opponent hits the shuttle. It s called the ready position because it helps you get ready for the next shot. Description: - You should be ready with a somewhat wide stance: your feet a little more than shoulder-width apart. - Head up, facing forward. - Knees slightly bent - Trunk slightly bent forward - Your weight should be shifted forwards a little
Grip: Do not grab the racket as if it was a stick, pay attention to the pictures. Types of hits Depending on the hight and depth we can use these different hits: clear, high drop, low drop, lob, drive (or forehand), backhand and smash
Clear and Lob The difference between these two technics is the hight of the racket. Whereas the lob needs the racket to be below our waist the clear needs to be done above our head. In both cases we hit the shuttle really strong so we send our opponent to the backcourt. By doing that we gain time so we can go back to the center of the court. This is why are considered defensive hits. Low and high drop. The difference between these two technics is the hight of the racket. Whereas the low drop needs the racket to be below our waist the high drop needs to be done above our head. HIGH DROP LOW DROP
The aim is to give a soft touch so it falls right after the net. Smash. This is a strong hit from above our head. It is an offensive hit because we try to win the point. It can also be done in the air after a jump. We should try to send the shuttle down and quickly to the opponet`s side of the court. Forehand or Drive. This is a basic hit we do when we hit the suttle from the same side of the body as that of the hand holding the racket. Backhand. This is a basic hit we do when we hit the suttle from the other side of the body as that of the hand holding the racket..
Players movement. In order to be well situated we should always try to stand on the center of the court. To make that possible wright after hitting the shuttle we must remember to go to the center! Do not forget the ready position 5. Things we can and cannot do When we play badminton we can: -Hit the shuttle with the racket. -Keep playing if the shuttle touches the net and goes to the other side. We can do this during the game and also after the service. When we play bádminton we cannot: -Hit the suttle with any bodypart. - Hit the suttle twice in a row -Touch the net with the racket or the body. -Go to the other side of the court above or below the net - Hit the suttle and send it to the ceiling or outside the court If any of these things happen the referee will call a fault. In that case the player looses the point.
