1 Level 3 Demonstrate knowledge of pig health, health problems, behaviour, welfare and biosecurity procedures Credits 8 Purpose This unit standard is for people who work or intend to work in the agriculture sector, specialising in piggery farming. People credited with this unit standard are able to: Demonstrate knowledge of: the husbandry factors affecting pig health Demonstrate knowledge of health problems in pigs Demonstrate knowledge of biosecurity procedures for a pork production unit and the economic significance of disease Demonstrate knowledge of pig behaviour, welfare and productivity Special notes 1. 3 Elements and Performance Criteria Element 1 Demonstrate knowledge of the husbandry factors affecting pig health Range Nutrition, management, environment, stress, hygiene, predisposing factors, vaccinations, treatments, drugs, quarantine, breeding and selection 1.1. Husbandry factors are described in terms of their implications for pig health Husbandry factors are described in terms of the requirements of the welfare code Element 2 Demonstrate knowledge of health problems Range Infective, parasitic, nutritional, environmental, reproductive, hereditary, injury, metabolic, poisons 2.1. Prognosis, control and preventative measures of health problems are described in accordance with veterinary guidelines Health problems are described in terms of productive and economic significance to the pork production unit Botswana Training Authority /10/2016 Page 3 of 5

4 Element 3 Demonstrate knowledge of biosecurity procedures for a pork production unit, and the economic significance of disease 3.1. Biosecurity procedures which aim to prevent the introduction of disease onto the pork production unit are described in accordance with the on farm procedures and veterinary guidelines. This include but is not limited to sow litter relationship, teat order and suckling behaviour, courtship and mating, farrowing, boar behaviour, feeding, excretory, social, moving behaviour The requirements for meeting pig welfare are described in terms of their influence on pig productivity. This include but is not limited to housing, environment, nutrition, husbandry, management Pig welfare is described in terms of its implications for pork producers and the pork industry.
