16 PHD IN MANAGEMENT/MPHIL IN MANAGEMENT SCIENCES General organisation The PhD programme in Management is a three- year full- time program. At the end of the first year, students meeting all the specific requirements (see dedicated section below) are awarded a MPhil in Management Studies (in Italian Master universitario di secondo livello ). The first year is characterized by an advanced learning programme of mandatory and elective courses on key topics in management studies with exams and assignments. It starts early in September with preparatory courses in mathematics and statistics. Official courses begin at the beginning of October and end in June. The first academic year has three terms. After two terms of core courses, the third term offers electives courses provided to support students in developing their research question and project and to enrich their methodological skills. Courses and participation to department international seminars absorb most of the students' activity from Monday to Friday. In early spring, PhD students are expected to present to the faculty Board a research idea which will be first mile stone for the choice of a PhD thesis supervisor among the PhD and Department faculty. After this important step, students will devote their summer to work on their summer project and are expected to write a Master Thesis as final step of the first PhD year and MPhil programme. Second- year doctoral students start to develop their research project and plan international mobility (summer schools, conferences, research abroad). Second year students are also expected to participate actively in department seminars as discussants. Usually, second year students leave for a period of research and study in a foreign institution, developing their research project with the support of the thesis supervisor. Third- year students are entirely devoted to their doctoral thesis, under the guidance of their supervisor and to the participation in the Departmental activities (seminars, presentations, workshops, etc.). Participation in international conferences is recommended and financially supported. The PhD Programme should be completed in three years. Requirements for the MPhil award Students enrolled in the PhD programme who acquire 79 ECTS in the first year will be awarded a MPhil in Management Studies. Students are required to attend one year courses and pass the related exams for acquisition of 66 ECTS, equivalent to 300 hours of teaching activities (lessons, workshops, etc). Practical research activities (in Italian tirocinio ) for a total of 250 hours (10 ECTS) are also among the requirements for the MPhil. These activities are carried out along the duration of the first year. Last, students must write a Master s thesis (research paper) (3 ECTS). Subdivision of ECTS by term (first year): first term courses: 24 ECTS second term courses: 24 ECTS third term courses: 18 ECTS Practical research activities: 10 ECTS Masters s thesis/summer paper: 3 ECTS Total ECTS for MPhil in Management Studies: 79 ECTS The PhD in Management website contains all the information on the PhD program including syllabus of courses and schedule. Director Prof. Anna Cabigiosu Partners Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in The Sciences, Leipzig, Germany Strategic Organization Design (SOD), University of Southern Denmark M.A.C.Lab The Management of Arts and Culture Lab is a place where research and teaching activities concerning the management of cultural productions can meet together. It aims to enhance interdisciplinary links with other research activities both in Italy and abroad, to increase and strengthen communication and collaboration with private and public institutions, and with organizations engaged in policy and social activities, as well as with the subjects involved in cultural development as a social and economic driver of growth. The idea that nowadays the cultural dimension plays a fundamental role in the process of creating value, is what drives the M.A.C.Lab project. Cultural productions and creative activities are increasingly important for the economy and are consequently taken into account in the decision- making processes aimed at fostering economic growth. Director Prof. Fabrizio Panozzo Risk, Sustainability and Corporate Performance Measurement (Risk- Lab) The Laboratory was set up in 2012, spurred by the perception of new scientific and operative needs. The extraordinary events and transformations of the last two decades have shown that the prevalent models of corporate theory are no longer fully satisfactory; this has led to limitations in the usefulness, regulatory value and interpretative capacity of studies in business economics. Business enterprises and firms have changed, as has the ethical and social context; and the eco- environmental equilibrium is also undergoing a process of transformation. It is precisely in situations like this that we must keep in mind that change is usually a source of new opportunities. The 7
38 Laboratory aims to take advantage of these opportunities by investigating a new model of reference and by offering to act as an interlocutor with firms, administrative bodies and institutions in the search for solutions that meet the requirements of this new context. With a focus on behaviours which make it possible to implement the most suitable strategic business choices, avoiding internal and external sustainability risks, the Laboratory offers interdisciplinary competences in order to promote basic research programmes; to participate in projects promoted by administrative bodies and national and international institutions; and to carry out research- intervention and commissioned consultancy activities in support of companies and public and private institutions. Director Prof. Giorgio Stefano Bertinetti Ca Foscari Competency Centre (CFCC) The Ca Foscari Competency Centre (CFCC) is an academic Centre with the aim to carry out research activities and to provide a range of services related to the assessment and the development of behavioral competencies in the higher education. The main aim of the Ca Foscari Competency Centre is the analysis of the behavioral competencies portfolio of those who attend the educational programmes offered by Università Ca Foscari and the promotion of their development. The CFCC s final users are: 1. students to whom the Centre offers an assessment tool of their human capital in order to plan their development programmes and their future in the labor market; 2. the Faculty of Ca Foscari University to which the Centre provides evaluation tools for defining programmes, contents and teaching methods with the aim to enhance the students behavioral competences; 3. firms and local labor market operators to which the Centre offers a support for the monitoring and development of the behavioral competencies possessed by their employees; 4. finally, the Competency Centre addresses its offer to external partners interested to activate applied research services. The Competency Centre aims to become an international landmark for the study and implementation of competency- based methodologies in the academic context. The Competency Centre will further develop the most advanced international experiences which have addressed the development of behavioral competencies in the academic setting as well as will explore new original lines of research. The research output of the Centre will contribute to enhance the qualitative matching between the students characteristics and the firms requirements. Director Prof. Fabrizio Gerli Vice Director Prof. Sara Bonesso Ca' Foscari Laboratory for Experimental economics Research at the Center for Experimental Research in Management and Economics is directed towards the understanding through experimental methods of individual and interactive behavior in the context of economics and management fields. Born from the collabration between the Economics and Management departments and directed by Massimo Warglien, the Center adresses rerach fields such as strategic decision making, behavioral finance, consumer behavior, probability and uncertianty, organizational decision making, reasoning and information processing, culture and behavior, language and interaction. 8
39 The Center is a pioneer in exploring new research methods, from web experiments (research outsourcing via M- Turk) to ethnographical experiments (in India and Guatemala) and economic applications of behavioral genetics (on a population of 2000 twins). The Center is a founding member of the international network Experimental Organization Science and has created a joint lab in Culture Cognition and Decision making with the JNU university of New Delhi. The center is funded by the european VII framework program, by a sapere aude grant of the danish DFF and by Swiss and Global. Members of the center have published their research in journals such as: Science, PNAS, Organization Science, Psychological Science, Journal of Banking and Finance, Journal of Consumer Psychology, Cognition, Synthese, Behavioral Decision Making, Games and Economic Behavior, Lancet. CAMI The Center for Automotive and Mobility Innovation (CAMI) provides research- based evidence and guidance to business decision makers and policy leaders on industrial transformations and new market opportunities following vehicle and mobility innovation. CAMI s research covers areas such as strategic management, innovation management, organization design, operations management, economic sociology, industrial organization, sustainable mobility and urban planning. The main activities of the center are the development of research projects with international academic and industrial partners and the dissemination of its research results through scientific publications, conferences, public events, and targeted communication (web- site, newsletter, etc.). The center can rely on a set of partnerships with experts in these disciplines that work in centers of international relevance such as the Program for Vehicle Mobility and Innovation - Wharton School, the Columbia University, and the Strategic Organization Unit of the University of Southern Denmark. Director Prof. Francesco Zirpoli OPHRA PHD RESEARCH INITIATIVE OPHRA is call for research projects to be presented to PhD students by research groups (working with external or internal partners on Prin, Firb, FSE or other research initiatives) and laboratories of the Department of Management. OPHRA aims firstly at activating a closer interaction among Department scholars and PhD students from the first year of their PhD program by the communication of some key on- going departmental research projects. Secondly, it would engage students interested in participating in one of the presented research projects. OPHRA would provide students, beyond courses and thesis, with a rich set of learning opportunities by which they can acquire some basic and more advanced research skills (developing a questionnaire, conducting interviews, interviews coding, etc.) and/or start working on a summer or a thesis paper. OPHRA is complementary to the Department of Management Research Day, whereby members of the Department of Management individually present themselves and their main research projects. Research project presentation Title: Abstract should have a clear, concise title; the contribution of a project should be evident from the title; formal research project title can be used. Keywords: Max 5 keywords. 9
40 Abstract: A structured abstract is mandatory and should be no longer than 500/700 words. Use the following headings where appropriate: Objectives Prior Work/Literature review Research method Results Implications 5. Value/Contribution Key references. Research team and network: Research team members' name, affiliation and short cv (option words). International partners, people and/or institutions Research proposal for PhD students 1. Activity (200 words max) Specify the main tasks and activities that will be assigned to the PhD student. 2. Period Starting date and indication of time span (n. months). 3. Educational and research aim Specify the kind of competences and/or research skills the PhD student will learn during her/his participation to the project. 4. Required research skills Specify whether or not the PhD student is required to possess some research skills, with a brief description if necessary RESEARCH SEMINARS Seminars at the Department of Management are organised on a weekly basis hosting both Ca Foscari researchers and international speakers from Italian, European and world wide Universities and research institutions. Each seminar is organised in two sections: the first one consists in the presentation of the speakers research paper and a PhD student acts as a discussant. The second one is a dedicated PhD lecture during which the Speaker discusses with the PhD students a specific theoretical or methodological implication of his/her research. Participation to Department seminar series is compulsory for all PhD students. Second year students are asked to act as discussant at least once during the whole academic year, while third and fourth year students are asked to act as discussant at least twice during the whole academic year Seminar Series September 2013 Stephanie Decker (Aston Business School) Paola Lanaro (Università Ca' Foscari Venezia) October 2013 Stefano Li Pira e Mariachiara Barzotto (Università Ca' Foscari Venezia) Daniele Cerrato (Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore Piacenza) John Thøgersen (Aarhus University) Stefan Schaltegger (Leuphana University of Luneburg) November 2013 Giovanni Favero (Università Ca' Foscari Venezia) Arianna Bove (Queen Mary University of London) 10
