What are call systems? A call system is a visual/acoustic system that can be used: To call personnel to the place where the call was triggered from To search for personnel or groups of people To forward information (e.g. from medical devices) 3
Patient call system for hospitals and nursing facilities DIN 0834 areas of application: Old people's homes Assisted living Medical practices Dialysis stations Hospitals Adult day-care centres 4
Standards and regulations for call systems Electrical engineering standards are created by the DKE (German Electrical Engineering Commission) -> Subsidiary of the VDE and the German Standards Committee Call systems -> DKE subcommittee "General signalling systems and signalling devices" is responsible Responsible for the DIN VDE 0834 standard "Light call systems; installing and operating systems in hospitals, nursing homes and penal institutions" 5
Excepted from the DIN VDE 0834 standard Emergency call systems used for ensuring the safety of persons living at home Systems for domestic use (home emergency call systems) are subject to the EN standard 6
Key features of the DIN VDE 0834 standard Every bed has a call button -> easily reachable Call button clearly marked and visible in the dark Visual display of triggered call -> reassurance light Presence buttons with acoustic signallers (call forwarding) must be installed in rooms where nursing staff are usually to be found Triggering of emergency calls when present with appropriate signalling A room signal light (RSL) must be installed outside every room with a red + green display and an optional white display (WC call) 7
Key features of the DIN VDE 0834 standard The light must be clearly visible at 500 lux A call must be displayed on the RSL within 1 second Text displays must be recognisable from 20 m at 500 lux Nursing staff must receive information within 5 s The presence button is used for cancelling the call Non-visible rooms (wet rooms) require a separate cancel button No common covers for call / operating devices and high voltage devices 8
Key features of the DIN VDE 0834 standard For call systems with intercoms, calls may be remotely cancelled when voice communication has occurred Non-intercom systems -> no remote cancel - but the acoustic call forwarding may be cancelled. System voltage less than 30 V AC or 60 V DC System voltage may only be used for the intended purpose Exception: An impulse relay switch for a reading lamp or similar. This must be permanently connected and have its own overvoltage protection. Transmission paths for other systems may not be used for call systems (separate cable) 9
Key features of the DIN VDE 0834 standard Call systems require emergency power no later than 15 s after the normal power has failed. Must be maintained for 1 h / calls must be stored for at least 30 s after a power failure. System voltage less than 30 V AC or 60 V DC Cables connecting buildings must be equipped with overvoltage protection at the exit points All protective grounds connected to the call system must be connected to the same main potential equalisation point. If this is not possible then the individual areas must be galvanically isolated. 10
Installation heights Operating device (call button): m Operating elements for wheelchairs: 0.85 m (as per DIN Barrier-free construction) Pull button: must be at least 20 cm above the highest spray head position Pull cord must be reachable by a person lying on the floor Operating devices with text display: 1.5 m 1.8 m not subjected to direct sunlight Lights / Hall displays: 1.3 m 2.2 m 11
Maintenance / Repair An operating log must always be available at the system All faults must be documented, with date/time, cause, author and repair measures Repairs must begin within 24 h of a fault occurring and this must also be documented in the operating log Unless otherwise defined by the manufacturer, maintenance must be performed quarterly and documented in the operating log 12
System characteristics Conceived for large and small applications Max. 59 stations, each with 99 rooms = 5841 rooms Consists of different independent microprocessor controlled devices, connected via a bus system Every module has a microcomputer The modules operate autonomously, which allows easy expansion of the system Data traffic is coded with addresses Permanent independent self-monitoring of the microcomputers, which allows faults and/or dropouts to be individually recognised and signalled Programming without special software, simple cabling In the case of power cuts, the last information state of the modules is retained With and without room intercoms 13
Product range Input devices Display devices Additional devices Call cancel button Cancel button /WC Pull button Pear button / light button Call button with socket Socket Pneumatic button Designer lights Single sided corridor display Double sided corridor display Duty room display Room display Room intercom Power supply / UPS Station transfer point Wireless transmitter / receiver PC with SW for logging Call-forwarding to DECT Telephone dialler SMS controller Connection to monitoring device 14
Bus types Room bus: Connects all devices in a room (incl. bathroom) e.g.: Call cancel button, WC cancel button, pull button pear button / light switch, call button with socket socket, pneumatic button Station bus: Connects all room modules Floor bus: Connects all station transfer points 15
Installation 1st floor Basic structure Station transfer point Floor bus Station bus Room bus Ground floor Station transfer point Station bus Room bus 16
Room bus description WC Station Station bus bus Room bus Shield 24 V DC Room data bus All light call system devices in a room are connected to the room bus. The room bus has 4 conductors. "d" = data "t" = clock "+24" = + 24VDC "GND"= ground These 4 conductors are to be connected to the terminals of the same designation on the room module (different versions possible) in exactly the manner shown here. This connection can be a room bus, implemented in a star configuration or mixed. The cable length (sum of all cables) must not exceed 100m. A cable of type: JY (St) Y 2x2x0.8 must be used for the room bus. The shield is to be connected to the GND terminal of each room module. To avoid short circuits at the device, the shield must be insulated. 17
Station bus description RM = room module ST = station transfer point PS = power supply Further stations All the room modules for the station must be connected to the station bus. Stub cables are to be avoided. The station bus should be laid as a ring cable. ELSO GmbH recommends closing the ring. This results in double data reliability. Please make absolutely sure that the conductors ("a"; "b"; "+24VDC" and "GND") are not swapped. The station bus cable (subsequently referred to as SYK=system cable) must be of type: Lapp Kabel UNITRONIC Bus Combi EIB 2x2x x1.5, or equivalent quality. The shield must be connected to each of the GND terminals. To avoid short-circuits in the device, the shield must be insulated. The data cable must not exceed a length of 500m. 18
Installation A room module is required for every room. Room modules are contained in: Duty room module Room module with call cancel button (also available with a display) Room module with room indicator light 19
Installation Room installation using a room module with room signal light Room module with room signal light 2x2x0.8mm 2 Room bus WC All devices are connected to the room bus. The room bus has 4 conductors. "d" = data "t" = clock "+24" = + 24VDC "GND"= ground 20
Installation Connection example: Data Clock + 24VDC Ground Bus Power supply 21
Installation Room module Room module with room indicator light For quiescent current monitoring of the call cables, all external call inputs (R-Z and R-W) must be terminated with a 3.6 k termination resistor. This terminator is installed at the factory and must not be removed.
