1 Purpose and objectives WP leader UM-FG was in charge to prepare the report of teaching and training material that was used by project partners in the implementation of all activities in the primary and secondary schools. Teaching and training materials are meant for teachers and school leaders and containing all the information s which they need to start their own school travel campaign on promoting eco-friendly trips. The main focus is on trips made to and from school. An important goal of these teaching and training materials is to raise awareness among children and young people and increase their knowledge on and interest in sustainable travelling. It is also important to give emphasis to the mobility management, sustainability and energy savings issues. Teaching and training materials are campaign materials like manual for teachers, the presentations, which were presented on two train-the-trainer CONNECT seminars in Austria (Graz) and Slovenia (Maribor), website schoolway.net and downloads (registration, measurement and evaluation forms etc.). They followed the results as presented in D1 Report on Best Practises for Primary and Secondary level Schools. Some presentations from the basic train the trainer seminars were used also on the seminars Train-thepractitioners for the representatives of schools and local actors. Train the practitioner seminars took place in Belgium, The Netherlands, United Kingdom, Bulgaria, Slovenia, Austria, Hungary, Italy and Greece. 2.1 Train the Trainer Concept The CONNECT consortium is build with partners who have experience in the field of setting up campaigns in schools (M21, DTV, IVP) and partners who have experience in the field of transport and/or training but not in setting up campaigns in schools as such (JMP, Modena, UM-FG, Miskolc, CRES, UBBSLA). DTV, IVP and M21 had made the didactical concept and organised the contents of the training session. IVP has focused on the didactical concept, DTV on the training for the primary school campaign and M21 on the training for the secondary school campaign. The training was divided in two main parts. Instructions were given to trainers from the different countries on how to train the teachers or practitioners in order to implement the campaigns and set up actions at local level. This has been transferred to all partners. With their experience, the partners DTV, M21 and IVP have trained the trainers. The trainees Teaching and training material 2
were all the partners involved in CONNECT. The basic Train the trainer session was being divided up in 2 periods. The first training has taken a place in Austria (Graz) and has focused on the campaign concept for primary schools. The training was focused on: 1) explaining the campaign concept for primary schools and 2) learning how to teach local practitioners to start the CONNECT campaign. The second Train the trainer has taken a place in Slovenia (Maribor). The training was focused on: 1) explaining the campaign concept for secondary schools and 2) learning how to teach local practitioners to start CONNECT campaign. Figure 1: Train the Trainer Concept The basic training session and workshops was focused on: Know-how of mobility education topics (basis psychological information on traffic know-how and traffic behaviour of children); Know how on didactics and pedagogical matters; Exercises regarding to country specific frame conditions; Presentation and discussion of best practice actions (target group and how to reach them); Teaching and training material 3
Dissemination strategies for school mobility management projects (communication strategies, cooperation with strategic partners); Know-how on project management for school campaigns (financial issues, e.g. how much costs a campaign, how to find a sponsor and/or other support); and Long term effects on efficient energy saving by the actions planned. At the first meeting in Graz (Austria) were introduced the following presentations, prepared by the project partners: Presentation: Traffic Snake Game Presentation: Communication strategies for the Traffic Snake Game Presentation: Ideas for School Mobility Management Presentation: Traffic and mobility psychology/education (insights on children s behavior) Presentation: Transfer and training (national implementation) At the second meeting in Maribor (Slovenia) were introduced the following presentation, prepared by the project partners: Presentation: Call for video Presentation: Traffic and mobility psychology/education (insights on youngster s behavior) Presentation: Dissemination (input from MAX) Presentation: Basic campaign set up ECO-TRIPER Presentation: Basic campaign set up ECO-TRIPER (deluxe) Presentation: Transfer and training Teaching and training material 4
2.2 Train the Practitioners Concept On both basic train the trainer seminars national responsible persons (CONNECT partners) had get the necessary knowledge to start teaching the local practitioners how they can implement the CONNECT campaigns. The training itself was organised for teachers and/or other (external) counsellors of the school. All CONNECT partners were responsible for setting up such a training session in their country. CONNECT partners invited at least 2 teachers per school and local actors for the training session. The training sessions were organised in close cooperation with the local authority as it is the goal of the CONNECT implementation to focus on different schools within cities / municipalities. A separate training session was organised for primary schools and secondary schools practitioners. The campaign in primary schools is different from the campaign in secondary schools. The training session for teachers and local actors take no longer than half a day (in average from 2 to 3 hours). Each project partner has at the training session presented the basic concept of the EU CONNECT project, which European partners (organisations) are involved and what are the aims and objectives of the project. For the implementation of the train the practitioners sessions, CONNECT partners presented their presentations based on the train the training sessions. A list of campaign materials which are needed to carry out the implementation of the both campaign was made available. Figure 2: Train the Practitioners Concept Teaching and training material 5
2 Teaching and training materials Teaching and training materials contain all the information which school teachers and leaders need to start their own school travel campaign on promoting eco-friendly trips. The teaching and training materials are intended to implement the campaign in schools. The campaign in primary schools is different from the campaign in secondary schools, therefore are teaching and training materials also different. The main focus of all teaching and training materials is on trips made to and from school. An important goal of these teaching and training materials is to raise awareness among children and young people and increase their knowledge on and interest in sustainable travelling. With all teaching and training materials it was necessary to clearly present the purpose and objective of the CONNECT project and both CONNECT campaigns. The aim of these teaching and training materials is that it provides information s for other people to organise and carry out the two campaigns. They should be able to use these teaching and training materials without the need to go back to the original trainers (CONNECT partners) for advice and details of what they need to do and how they need to do, though the partners provided the train-the-practitioner sessions for this and were always available by phone and mail after this training. The main source of the relevant teaching and training materials for all parties is the official CONNECT website Website CONNECT is not the first project looking at schools or involving them in campaigns. One of the successful EU projects PROVIDER developed the website This website provides a lot of useful tools for planning, organising, and implementing mobility management measures focussed on schools as well as online surveys of the pupils mobility behaviour and state of health. In addition it is possible for registered schools to download teaching materials and to get qualitative background information needed for mobility management at schools. The website is adapted (restyled and recycled) for CONNECT and serves both CONNECT campaigns: the Traffic Snake campaign for children in primary schools and Eco-Trip for young people of secondary level schools. Both projects have the same goal: more ecofriendly trips from home to school. On the website teachers are able to register their school and the modal split of the pupils/students before, during and after the campaign. Every Teaching and training material 6
school can get their own log in code. The website has different pages for teachers, kids and youth. Everyone can get the information they need made on their level. Figure 3: Website The website presents all information about the Traffic Snake Game for the schools, children, parents, municipality and local stake-holders. On the website they should download the measurement forms for the action, as well as all other interesting and related information such as manual, parent information, poster and activities/lessons for the deluxe version of the Traffic Snake Game. For secondary school students ( youth ) there is an introduction about ECO-TRIPPER and some background information on eco-friendly trips and sustainability. On the website is also the button, called ECO-TRIP. This button shows the percentage of Eco-Trips of each participating country. If a country reaches the pre-set target they can visit different countries and cities online and find some background information on these other participants. When available the Eco-Trip short movies will be available on this website as well. The winners of the Eco-Tripper contest will get a special announcement on the website while all videos are available at YouTube, the specialised video broadcasting site where CONNECT has its own channel: The CONNECT website is available in all partners languages; translation was/will be made by each partner. The website will include all the dissemination and information items created throughout the project (presentations, papers, publications) and results and deliverables (publishable reports, documents) useful for stakeholders and/or the large public. This website is available free of charge. Teaching and training material 7
2.2 Basic teaching and training materials for the Traffic Snake campaign Basic campaign materials for the campaign Traffic Snake Game are: Presentations General presentation of the CONNECT project This presentation introduces the basic information s of project, content of project, planned activities and objectives of the project. Basic information s about the project contains the names of involved organizations and period of duration of project. Content of the project includes a demonstration of environmentally friendly and unfriendly forms of traffic. Important part of the presentation includes planning activities and the time of their implementation. It presents the implementation of Traffic Snake Game and presents minimal quantitative results for the primary schools actions. Traffic and mobility psychology/education: Insights on children s behaviour Children are a most vulnerable group of traffic participants. Therefore, this presentation focuses on detection of traffic situations from the perspective of young children. Understanding and perception of children is different from adolescents and adults. They realize activities around them much more slowly. In the presentation is showed how children detect activities in the surrounding area. Presentation Traffic Snake Game This presentation introduces background, aims, objectives of the Traffic Snake Game, procedures and rules how to play the Traffic Snake Game. Campaign materials 1 Manual for primary schools The manual includes instructions for realisation of the campaign Traffic Snake Game. It is the most important campaign material in which are included game rules, plan and realisation of game, information or notices for parents and additional activities from tested practices. 1 See CONNECT Deliverables for more details on manual and campaign materials Teaching and training material 8
Best Practice A number of good examples: analysis of school areas, Parents stops, Mobility lessons, Walking Pools, City maps, Police campaigns, Mobility project week, Mobility diary Tool for calculating class (school) Sets Traffic Snake Game targets on school level (Form 1: Set different class targets and Form 2: Set the same class targets) Measurement forms o Class form measurement The teacher writes down the transport modes of the pupils on the class form. He/she also writes down the number of pupils who wore a bicycle helmet. o School form measurement The school form, the overview of all the class forms, gives an overall picture of the transport modes of all the pupils in school and of the number of pupils wearing a bicycle helmet. This gives us the status of the current proportion of safe and environment-friendly trips to school. Evaluation forms o Evaluation form for the school Purpose of this short inquiries is finding of how many pupils was cooperating in campaign and or travelling behaviours of pupils were changed with the help of versed play. o Evaluation form for teachers Purpose of this questionnaire is to determine teachers opinion on the game Traffic Snake Game and whether it is a game to stimulate their thinking on how to travel to school. o Evaluation form for the parents Purpose of this questionnaire is to determine parents views on game Traffic Snake Game that was implemented at the school their child and whether it is a game to stimulate their thinking on how to travel to school. School materials for Traffic Snake Game o Banner; Teaching and training material 9
o Stickers; and o Information letter for Parents (proposal). 2.3 Basic teaching and training for the Eco-Trip campaign Basic campaign materials for the campaign Eco-Trip are: Presentations General presentation of the CONNECT project Like the one for primary schools but now with the focus towards implementation of ECO-TRIP campaign with minimal quantitative results for the secondary schools actions. Traffic and mobility psychology/education insights into youngster s behaviour Youngsters are not children and are not adults yet. But this group is indeed like adults concerning a lot of traffic and mobility behaviour. In this presentation we introduced typical approaches to make young people aware and we focussed on important issues to approach young people in general. Call for video This presentation is intended for all who participate in the production of the film: rules and guidelines as well as hints for making movies. In this presentation we refer to on which prepared films should be uploaded. You Tube is a video sharing website where users can upload, view and share video clips. The students can use the You Tube Help Centre to compilation their own short movie. Basic campaign set up ECO-TRIPER deluxe In the deluxe version students should get extra lessons about sub themes like health, climate change and road safety. This can help the students to increase their knowledge on and raise their interest in the ECO-TRIPPER campaign and on sustainability issues in general. Teaching and training material 10
Campaign materials 2 Manual for secondary schools For secondary schools and teachers also a manual was made with instructions for the realisation of the ECO-TRIP campaign. In the manual are included campaign rules, plan and realisation of campaign, checklist of needed materials, information s for the students, various supplements about debate, mood board and storyboard. This manual is made so, that also students can use him (information how to make a short movie, what may be their roles in the production of short movie, etc.) though primary target group are teachers; Call for Videos - instructions By making a short film become students part in European wide competition. These instructions provide a plan of realisation of short film. This plan provide a few bases for easier production of a short film (how to produce a short film, how many students can participate in the production of a one short film, what may be their roles, when is the deadline for the submission for the short film, when is national and when a European competition, etc. Registration form Teachers or directors of schools use registration form to participate in Eco-Trip. Class form measurement The teacher writes down the transport modes of the students on the class form. School form measurement The school form, the overview of all the class forms, gives an overall picture of the transport modes of all students in school. This gives us the status of the current proportion of safe and environment-friendly trips to school. School materials for campaign Eco-Trip Posters; and Stickers (can be put on all sustainable transport modes like bicycles, skateboards, electric scooters, also on books etc. They are meant to raise awareness on eco-friendly trips.). 2 See CONNECT Deliverables for more details on manual and campaign materials Teaching and training material 11
3 Teaching and training materials used in the participating countries In section 2 we presented the basic teaching and training materials used in the implementation of campaigns in schools in participating countries. Project partners were using equal teaching and training materials, yet translated into their languages (manuals, measurement and evaluation forms, instructions etc.). Some presentations from the Trainthe-trainer seminars were directly used on the seminars Train-the-practitioners for the representatives of schools and local actors but most had some adaptation to fit the country specific needs. These presentations are important teaching and training materials with which the partners presented the purpose and objective of the both campaigns. These presentations are available in the different CONNECT languages, and became available at the website. Each partner selected the parts most crucial to fit their local campaign needs: e.g. in countries where the participating schools had more experience with mobility management issues, no introduction in this theme was separately given, it would be embedded in the general presentation. While in countries where the participating schools had no experience with mobility management issues, this could indeed be a special presentation on the topic at hand. 3.1 Materials used in the campaign in primary schools Each project partner forwarded to UM-FG a list of teaching and training materials translated in their languages, which have been used in the implementation of Traffic Snake Game in the primary schools. The manuals for teachers, measurement and evaluation forms are used by all partners (though some haven t been mentioned in the table below). Mainly, they are used the same teaching and training materials, only the presentations were different at some CONNECT partners to fit national and/or regional needs. Teaching and training material 12
