Secgo secure mobility in networks Secgo Software Information security since 1983 Mobility management since 1999 Networking solutions: VPN software Mobile IP software Finlaysoninkuja 21 A PL 333 FI TAMPERE Tel Stella Business Park Lars Sonckin kaari 16 FI ESPOO
Mobility management in heterogeneous radio networks Extension of radio network coverage and increase of bandwidth Diversification of end devices End-user demands/needs Mobile IP standardisation IETF 3GPP What Mobile IP enables technologically from end-user s view-point from service provider s view-point What components Mobile IP consists of
Extension of radio network coverage and increase of bandwidth City WLAN networks Oulu, Turku, Lahti, Vantaa Home WLAN networks as extensions for broadband connections Internal WLAN networks in companies conference rooms, future service points HotSpot WLAN networks hotels, airports GPRS-EDGE-WCDMA-WIMAX-(xDSL) Many technologies and network operators
Extension of radio network coverage and increase of bandwidth The Government of Finland has granted an operating licence to build a new digital mobile communications network. Flash-OFDM was chosen as the technology for the network. This is the first time in the world the technology will be taken in extensive use in mobile networks. The Government granted the licence to Digita Oy on 22 June 2005.
Extension of radio network coverage and increase of bandwidth Digita is committed to build the network in three stages. The first stage includes sparsely populated areas, such as Lapland and Eastern Finland, the archipelago and coastal areas. That will be completed in September Nearly all of Finland will be covered by December 2007 and the last shadow regions by September 2009.
Diversification of end devices WLAN already in-built in laptops Nokia 9500 GPRS-EDGE-WLAN WLAN significant part in nearly all mobile phones/pdas in the future WLAN already included even in cameras (Canon EOS-1Ds Mark II)
End-user demands/needs Same services available regardless of time or location (as in the office) Same functionality and ease-of-use regardless of network technology or service provider network access must be transparent changes of network automatic and seamless (when moving from one network to another) seamless connections to services even when changing networks Both old and new applications on top of IP (speech, video, etc.)
Mobile IP Development of wireless connection technologies Development of end devices directed to support various network technologies User needs Mobile IP as enabler of macro mobility
Mobile IP standardisation IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force) RFC 3344: The latest Mobile IP standard (August 2002) RFC 2003: IP encapsulation within IP RFC 2794: NAI extensions RFC 3012: Challenge/response extensions RFC 3024: Reverse tunnelling RFC 3115: Vendor extensions RFC 3519: Mobile IP NAT traversal
Mobile IP standardisation 3GPP (The 3rd Generation Partnership Project) The original scope of 3GPP was to produce globally applicable Technical Specifications and Technical Reports for a 3rd Generation Mobile System based on evolved GSM core networks and the radio access technologies that they support It seems likely that macro mobility will be resolved with MIP (MIPv4 migration to MIPv6)
Secgo Mobile IP in Fujitsu s Patja Fujitsu s Patja service provides seamless mobility between network technologies in DNA s commercial WLAN network.
Secgo Mobile IP as enabler of 3G services Elisa and Fujitsu in extensive cooperation to promote 3G services
Secure mobility in networks Company network WLAN City WLAN Mobile user VPN Branch office Internet WLAN WLAN HotSpot WLAN GPRS / EDGE / 3G
Mobile IP components Secgo Mobile IP client Client software in user s workstation Mobile Node (MN) functionality and added features to support ease-of-use Secgo Mobile IP server, home agent Home agent (HA) is a server that keeps a log of registered devices and their location in the network each given time and routes their data traffic Secgo Mobile IP server, foreign agent Foreign agent (FA) is a server installed outside of the company network facilitating and speeding up network access (option) Secgo Mobile IP server, mobile router Mobile router provides seamless connections between the company network and mobile network, e.g. in a bus, train, boat, ambulance. Mobile router includes the MN functionality making it available for the whole mobile network
What Mobile IP enables - technologically - Seamless mobility between various network technologies (GPRS-EDGE-WCDMA-WIMAX-(xDSL )) services are provided by various parties (home, city, operator, employer, etc.) Seamless connections to services both in Internet and intranet Implementation of new technologies (PUSH applications such as VoIP, video, messaging, etc.)
What Mobile IP enables - from end-user s view-point - End-usersareableto concentrateon applicationuse instead of network technology Inconvenient rebooting when changing networks can be avoided (authentication, VPN, applications) The lives of end-users made easier
What Mobile IP enables - from service provider s view-point - Rational utilisation of WLAN networks current login techniques limit user numbers in WLAN HotSpots Mobile IP makes the use of the best available network technology in each geographical location automatic improved services Always Connected increases the utilisation rate of all wireless networks Enables the development of new services
What delays mobile use? Inadequate information security need to protect company network and its data; in-built security mechanisms of wireless networks have been proven inadequate IPSec/SSL/SSH.. Low usability current solutions generally too complicated (Web login, no automatic roaming, start..stop..start..) the solution should be as transparent as possible and require no network expertise from end-users Mobile IP for ease-of-use
Mobile IP in a nutshell IETF s only standard for IP mobility Manages connections in link layers and routing for users/devices Keeps a log of the IP addresses of mobile devices and directs their incoming data traffic to the right address Mobile IP is a clear mobility standard, independent of the used information security solutions
