INTRODUCTION Like K-12 schools throughout the United States, primary schools around the world need to implement new technologies that help optimize learning and collaboration among their students, faculty and administrative staff. Wireless LANs are among the most important of these, providing anytime and anywhere access to online resources while preparing students for the allwireless world that awaits them once they graduate. From laptop carts to video learning to social networking to RFID tracking, wireless LANs provide essential collaboration tools in classrooms. The adoption of n brings higher performance, better reliability and increased predictability to wireless networks, making many more applications possible. All stakeholders in the school system can benefit from a simpler and more trustworthy network, with new and innovative applications including: District Office and Administration Can Streamline Procedures: Classroom applications can track each student's progress to facilitate reporting, provide up-to-date student information on handheld computers, respond to emergency situations and handle disciplinary incidents, security enforcement and parent communications. IT Department Can Optimize Performance and Cost Savings: The flexibility of wireless networks accommodates rapid expansion, particularly important for schools using mobile classrooms where cabling is challenging. Wireless LANs are also less expensive than traditional wired connections, especially in older or temporary buildings. Other schools simply have no space for dedicated computer labs. Teachers Can Be More Proactive and Accessible: Wireless networks increase interaction between teacher and students by complementing classroom instructions with on-line applications including digital whiteboards, on-line testing and real-time access to administrative resources. Curricula can be designed to better match individual learning styles. Students Can Learn More Efficiently: Wi-Fi provides the opportunity for more free-flowing collaboration among peers, whether through social networking applications, collaborative learning or online resources. GROWING DEMAND FOR WIRELESS Whereas higher education users focus mainly on delivering high-performance, pervasive wireless coverage across large campus environments, primary and K12 schools are more likely to need support for specific applications such as laptop carts, wireless IP telephony, video surveillance, video learning and mobile classrooms. However, many schools find that once a network is installed for one application it will also be used for others. A network intended for laptop carts may also carry educational videos to projectors, keep track of students or equipment with locator badges, and support cafeteria point-of-sales systems. Page 3

These multiple requirements make it critical for schools to have a wireless infrastructure that can deliver high performance in dynamic, high-density environments while scaling to support unforeseen challenge. With tight budgets and limited IT resources, primary schools also need a system that it is simple to deploy and manage and that can run without the need for a wireless expert at every school THE HIDDEN CHALLENGES OF WIRELESS The broad availability and relatively low price of WLAN products has made it all too easy to deploy a WLAN without adequate understanding of the technology s limitations. This often leads to degraded levels of service, security, and usability. Specifically, wireless LANs for schools must address three unique requirements: REQUIREMENT 1: RAPID LOGIN & RELIABLE CONNECTIVITY IN CROWDED USER ENVIRONMENTS Wireless in the classroom is designed to support connected learning, communications between teachers and students, and peer-to-peer collaboration. Users just want it to work. The network must be able to deliver immediate and reliable access to online resources and the Internet. Specifically, quick log-in is required because classes typically run for less than an hour: Both connections to the network and security procedures such as authentication must take place in seconds. Any technology that significantly cuts into valuable instruction time can hinder rather than help educational goals. In most schools, Wi-Fi supports computer labs, mobile computer carts and digital media centers environments in which multiple users need simultaneous access to the network, often all running applications that demand high performance. Providing immediate and reliable connectivity in such environments is challenging due to over-the-air packet collisions and radio interference that are left unchecked in a traditional Wi-Fi environment. These result in delays that become increasingly significant as more users try to reach networked resources. Many IT managers attempt to improve coverage by throwing additional access points at the network, something that only makes contention worse by increasing the interference in a given area. The underlying problem is that clients control access to the airwaves and have no way to know who should connect at any particular time. The only sure solution is to give control to the network, not individual clients. REQUIREMENT 2: SIMPLE AND COST-EFFECTIVE INSTALLATION Deployment is one of the biggest hurdles to successfully adopting Wi-Fi in schools. First, primary schools lack the necessary IT staff to deploy and manage WLANs. In addition, large wireless networks must be deployed during school vacations or in the narrow window of time between the start of the fiscal year and the beginning of the school year, placing enormous pressure on the already-limited IT staff. Finally, schools IT staff must often deal with unique Page 4

building designs that involve multiple enclosed classrooms, long hallways and remote or temporary buildings. Traditional WLAN solutions require complex site surveys, channel planning and ongoing RF tuning. To complicate matters, WLAN deployments are typically phased in over time, necessitating ongoing changes to the network design. The wireless deployment may also be modified as more users are added or new applications are deployed. These changes to the network design are extremely complicated to plan, with potential ripple effects on the existing deployment due to the limited number of non-overlapping channels. In particularly crowded areas, access points (APs) are placed closer together to take advantage of higher data rates, increasing the speed at which clients transmit data. However, careful planning to avoid adjacent APs having the same channel often increases interference and network congestion. REQUIREMENT 3: NETWORK GROWS WITH THE NEEDS OF THE SCHOOL FOR MAXIMUM INVESTMENT PROTECTION Whereas corporate organizations may replace technology every months, school capital budgets do not permit such short infrastructure refresh cycles. This makes it exceptionally difficult to keep up with emerging capabilities and rapid standards evolution of Wi-Fi technology, ranging from faster radios to new client devices to ever-changing security approaches. In addition, since the right wireless applications are not obvious at the time of deployment, the original network requirements are almost guaranteed to require future modification. Advanced applications such as voice and video, for example, will require both more bandwidth and seamless mobility. Schools are often forced to migrate to a newer and more expensive technology in order to keep up with increasing network usage and changing requirements. For these reasons, a school s wireless strategy must take into consideration not just the initial installation and hardware costs but also investment protection that allows for a more gradual migration to future standards and capabilities. A SMARTER WIRELESS LAN FOR SCHOOLS As schools become increasingly dependent on connected learning, wireless will continue to play a growing role in the delivery and administration of education. However, deploying a high-quality wireless network that supports the technical and business requirements of educational institutions is not as simple as it seems. Early adopters of wireless have learned the hard way that most WLAN systems were designed primarily to deliver basic data applications (e.g., Internet access and ) to a few users rather than bandwidth-intensive multimedia applications in crowded classroom settings. A new and smarter wireless LAN architecture addresses the emerging requirements of advanced applications, changing user behavior, and unpredictable educational IT requirements by combining centralized security and management with system-wide air traffic coordination and control. How does this translate to benefits for school users and IT administrators? Page 5

Simple: No RF expertise required to deploy and manage Reliable: Seamless handoffs across access points (APs) for transparent mobility Predictable: Guaranteed high priority delivery of multi-media applications Cost-effective: low total cost of ownership & maximum return on investment, as higher client density per AP means that fewer APs need to be deployed and simpler management reduces the need for ongoing support With these advances in the performance, management and investment protection of wireless network infrastructure, schools can now deploy a pervasive wireless network confidently and cost-effectively. FINALY A WIRELESS LAN SOLUTION THAT JUST WORKS With some of the largest school deployments globally, Meru Networks is leading the charge in delivering a wireless infrastructure that exceeds the expectations educational users. Designed within the framework of the n standard, the Meru WLAN System makes the network simple and trustworthy with centralized management and comprehensive security. It also addresses the critical elements for deploying enterprise-class WLANs that most networks lack, including: QUALITY OF SERVICE Recent real-life cases show the time saving advantages of Meru s patented innovation. 1 Meru s switch-like Air Traffic Control technology coordinates over-the-air traffic to enable quickboot for computer carts & labs. In addition, the Virtual Cell architecture enables increased capacity, bandwidth and performance in demanding environments by layering channels in the same physical space for smooth scalability. This results in excellent throughput with reliable connectivity and predictable data rates for all clients. MERU SIMPLIFIES DEPLOYMENT AND ON-GOING MANAGEMENT Meru allows adjacent access points to use the same radio channels, simplifying deployment and saving valuable time. Technically speaking, its Air Traffic Control technology puts the network as opposed to clients in control. That enables effective load-balancing across all access points and delivers seamless roaming for real-time applications. MERU S UNIQUE TECHNOLOGY DELIVERS INVESTMENT PROTECTION Meru protects a school s investment by delivering a wireless network that supports advanced applications like voice over wireless LAN all without dramatically increasing the number of access points or changing the network design. It saves money by minimizing operational as well as capital costs. Meru s offers Airtime Fairness technology supports high-performance mixed networks, with n and legacy clients coexisting and not adversely affecting each others performance. This results in fewer complaints from users and easier management of the network for IT staff. In addition, the Meru Wireless LAN System is designed to deliver a converged voice data and video solution, all kinds of traffic sharing the airwaves. By building on the system s ability to Page 6

control channel activity with Air Traffic Control technology, Meru dynamically recognizes when a VoIP call is initiated and reserves bandwidth over the air for the call. The result? Unparalleled call quality and connection reliability: By coordinating channel access, Meru makes wireless trustworthy. RF contention is minimized to deliver high-performance service to large numbers of users in crowded classrooms Simple deployment and management: Meru s Virtual Cell architecture eliminates expensive and laborious channel planning Support for Advanced Applications: Meru provides up and downstream Quality-of-Service (QoS) for a predictable network, enabling you to deploy WLANs with voice, video, and data over a single wireless infrastructure Investment Protection: Meru assures reliable service and offers a scalable system, with easy migration to new and innovative technologies With the Meru WLAN solution, schools do not have to sacrifice performance and reliability for price.
