The Joint Commission Laboratory Accreditation Program and APHL Jennifer Rhamy MBA, MA, MT(ASCP)SBB, HP Executive Director, Laboratory Accreditation Program
Who is The Joint Commission? Accrediting healthcare organizations since The largest accrediting organization in health care with over 17,000 organizations Accredit programs in multiple disciplines including: hospitals, home care, ambulatory care centers, critical access hospitals, behavioral health, long term care, and disease specific care certification Our Mission: To continuously improve health care for the public, in collaboration with other stakeholders, by evaluating health care organizations and inspiring them to excel in providing safe and effective care of the highest quality and value.
How Does The Joint Commission Help Organizations? Models from high-reliability industries show us that health care can be improved Methods to get there: Performance and outcome measures established Standards established to drive high performance across the continuum of care without being prescriptive Accreditation and survey processes provide an educational, structured approach for identifying strengths and weaknesses in an organization The Gold Seal is recognized both internally and externally by patients as the organization s commitment to their care
Joint Commission Firsts National Patient Safety Goals Center for Transforming Healthcare, finding solutions for complex health care issues Patient Speak Up campaign to report concerns about any aspect of facility Tracer methodology to follow results from lab to bedside to evaluate continuum of care
The Joint Commission Laboratory Accreditation Program Accrediting laboratories since 1979, with close to 3000 CLIA numbers All professional surveyors with no reciprocity arrangements for facilities provide consistency Involve health care facility leadership in process to link laboratory to patient care Standards based on outcomes and evidence-based medicine concepts Tracers provide efficient, effective way to link lab processes throughout survey and connect back to the patient
Types OF Facilities Accredited Accredit : Laboratories in hospitals, clinics, long term care facilities, home care organizations, behavioral health care organizations, ambulatory sites and physician offices Reference labs Freestanding laboratories, such as assisted reproductive technology labs Blood transfusion and donor centers Public health laboratories, including Indian Health Service laboratories Laboratories in federal facilities, such as the Department of Veteran s Affairs and the Department of Defense Point-of-care test sites which include blood gas labs providing services to patients in emergency rooms, surgical suites, cardiac catheterization labs, and in other patient care areas
Considerations Universal standards for leadership, document control, environment of care, and others which can be maintained by centralized department No expense of employee travel for survey Professional surveyors provide consistency Outcome-focused standard process without restricting technical practices Tracer methodology Lab Advantage cost savings Dedicated account executives to facilitate your interactions with us Internal recognition of the lab s achievements in quality care throughout organization
What Can We Do Together? Build high-reliability diagnostic programs through a cost-effective, outcome-focused quality approach Experience an interactive, educational survey that drives continuous improvement efforts and operational efficiency
