1 Position Specification Position: Organization: Location: Vanderbilt University Medical Center Nashville, TN Reporting Relationship: This position reports directly to the Director, Patient and Family Centered Care. Will foster and maintain appropriate relationships across the health system in order to work successfully within a matrixed environment. System Background Vanderbilt University Medical Center has built a strong reputation as a leader in medical education, research and patient care throughout the Southeast and the nation over the course of its 135-year history. This institution is comprised of the School of Medicine, the School of Nursing, the Vanderbilt Clinic and Medical Group and the Vanderbilt University Hospital. Biomedical research at Vanderbilt has long been recognized for its contributions to the advancement of medicine. The School of Medicine ranks 16 th among 125 medical schools in U.S. News & World Report s 2008 survey, America s Best Graduate Schools. Vanderbilt University Hospital includes 836 licensed beds; employs over 9,500 FTEs; and generates net revenue in excess of $1.48 Billion. It offers the region s only Level 1 trauma center. The Vanderbilt University Hospital (VUH) was named among the nation s top 100 hospitals by Thomas Reuters. VUH is the only hospital in Tennessee to be named to the U.S. News Best Hospitals Honor Roll of the nation s top hospitals a tribute reserved for a select group of institutions labeled the "best of the best." In 2009, only 21 hospitals made the honor roll, with Vanderbilt ranking 16 th. The Vanderbilt Medical Group and Clinic experienced over 1,266,000 patient visits and more than 51,600 patients were admitted to the Vanderbilt Hospital. Vanderbilt University Hospital and the Monroe Carell Jr. Children s Hospital at Vanderbilt are two of only three Tennessee hospitals included on the list of America s Best Hospitals compiled by U.S. News & World Report magazine. There are more than 1,200 Vanderbilt medical group physicians on staff comprising over 95 ambulatory specialty practices in several campus and off-campus locations. 2 Vanderbilt s programs in cancer; ear, nose and throat; hormonal disorders; gynecology; kidney disease; orthopaedics; pulmonary disease; rheumatology; neurology; and urology are among the best such programs nationally. Vanderbilt University and Medical Center is the largest private employer in middle Tennessee and second largest in the state, employing more than 22,300 and has an annual regional economic impact of approximately $6 billion of which the Medical Center s impact totals over $4.3 billion. It is the largest provider in the region under the states Medicaid program for the poor and uninsured, TennCare. The VUSM research program is the fastest growing in the U.S. and boasts: VUSM was 10 th in the nation in NIH grant funding for FY Support for competitive research grants from all external sources was more than $417 million in FY From , the compound annual growth rate in NIH grant awards to VUSM was 17.8% the fastest growth of all U.S. academic medical centers. The decision analysis upon which therapeutic intervention is based remains an art that relies upon: a caring patient-doctor relationship, knowledge of science and evidence based medicine, surgical skill, experience and the ability to ask and answer questions. 4 Position Summary The Director of Patient Education and Health Literacy is responsible for leading the coordination of patient education content and materials, and the implementation of health literacy standards for Vanderbilt Hospitals and the Vanderbilt Clinics. Key Responsibilities Develop a central resource center that provides consultative leadership to distributed educators on methodology of optimal delivery of patient / family education. Establish a structure with medical leadership by which patient education materials are reviewed for clinical appropriateness. Develop infrastructure for inventory control and purchasing of educational materials. Establish a process to review current patient education materials in conjunction with medical leadership. Establish a replacement plan for materials supplied by vendors. Establish and administrate policies / procedures related to patient education. Collaborate with Informatics to establish technical control of patient education materials. Establish and operate a Health Information Center physical or virtual. Develop a strategic plan and budget. Develop metrics to measure effectiveness of patient education. Collaborate with various stakeholders such as the Patient and Family Advisory Councils on effectiveness of methodologies and content needs. Develop strategic and operational partnerships across the medical center to develop and support new patient education initiatives. Chairs Patient Education Council Establish graphic and readability standards for various types of education material. Qualifications Education Master s Degree required. Experience A minimum of ten years of related experience is required with a demonstrated record of success in the patient education and health literacy field, with an exceptional understanding of how people access information across the broad spectrum of needs and disciplines.
