4 Work plan WP1: Descriptive epidemiology: Led by Rafael Peris (Group PI JM Borras). Specific activities planned with deliverables together with the Group of FX Bosch, N Malats and CA Gonzalez: To assess trends in cancer incidence in Spain using different statistical Bayesian models, assessing different demographic hypothesis To estimate incidence and mortality based on partial data from cancer registries To analyse survival of childhood cancer in Spain by volume of hospitals To validate incidence data on sarcoma and their subtypes in population cancer registries To analyse Incidence of cancer in Spanish AIDS patients after the introduction of HAART To analyse the incidence of bladder cancer according to the new WHO classification; incidence and survival of GIST tumours and their mutational profiles; and to estimate overdiagnosis of prostate cancer associated with PSA test
5 Work plan WP2: Genetic and Molecular epidemiology: Led by Nuria Malats in cooperation with the groups led by C Lazaro, Ca Gonzalez, FX Real, JC Lacal and L Montuenga: To promote the research conducted by the participating groups through the establishment of a network of national and international researchers/groups of reference in genetic and molecular epidemiology; To train on methodological/statistical aspects for genetic and molecular risk as well as prognostic and predictive factors by sharing expertise and results from the participating groups; To advice on the available technological platforms for omics data determination and analysis and integration in epidemiological studies.

Infections and cancer: Led by FX Bosch with the contributions of the groups led by Ca Gonzalez and JM Borras To describe the HPV type distribution in cancers of the vulva vagina penile anal and oropharyngeal in Spain and comparisons with the international distributions. The project interacts with pathology departments in Spain pertaining to the RETIC network To assess follow up and prognostic value of HPV DNA in oral cavity and oropharyngeal cancers international collaboration in a EU granted project To create a reference laboratory for HPV infections and cancer To assess the virulence factors of H. pylori as prognostic markers of gastric cancer risk in pre-neoplasic lesions To analyse cost effectiveness analysis of HPV screening and vaccination in Spain
7 Work plan WP4: Lifestyle and environmental factors: Led by CA Gonzalez with the groups led by FX Bosch, JM Borras, L Montuenga, N Malats, JC Lacal and FX Bosch To promote and carryout collaborative research projects among groups participating in the Programme, regarding life-style factors (such as smoking, diet, alcohol and physical exercise) and environmental risk factors for cancer in relation to cervical cancer, oesophageal and gastric cancer, pancreas and bladder cancer To promote and carryout collaborative research projects among groups participating in the Programme in relation with the development and use of biomarkers of exposure to life style and environmental risk factors. In relation mainly to gastric cancer, pancreas and bladder cancer, and cancer of the ovary and endometrium.

Cancer prevention and control: led by JM Borras with the groups led by J Zulueta, FX Bosch, CA Gonzalez, G Capella, C Lazaro and L Montuenga To analyse the cost effective analysis for different screening strategies for patient with hereditary cancer syndromes, with special interest in the Lynch syndrome To assess the feasibility of lung cancer screening in Spain To analyse the patterns of care in regions of Spain for sarcoma, lung cancer, rectal cancer and breast cancer. Comparison with evidence based clinical guidelines To evaluate the impact of the changes in smoking laws on second hand smoking: assessment of their consequences in prevention of smoking related tumors To analyse the adherence to oral chemotherapy and hormone treatments in breast, rectal, kidney and GIST in a multihospital cohort of patients To assess the effectiveness of weight lost and physical activity in the reduction of recurrences of breast cancer.
