Examine conceptual learning progressions for adjacent grades Pilot refined district curriculum, using resources and instructional strategies from revised standards and model curriculum Incorporate 21 st Century (Universal)Skills and College-Career Readiness standards into instruction through lessons, labs, projects and activities
Gr. 4 Content Remaining Earth and Space Sciences Geologic processes that affect the surface of Earth, including landform formation. Life Science fossils, the environment and extinction. Physical Science the temperature of objects can be changed NOTE: Except for electricity, these are what we need to spend our energies on this year in regard to creating quality units, finding resources, incorporating 21 st century skills and assessments.
Gr. 4 NEW Content Life Science: Environmental changes can be positive, neutral or detrimental (formerly in gr. 5) Physical Science: matter is conserved (formerly 7 th gr.) Physical Science: Heat and electrical energy can be transferred and transformed; electricity and magnetism are related (formerly in 5 th gr.) Note: those that are gr. 5 need to also be taught this year in gr. 4
Gr. 4 Content No Longer a Focus Earth and Space Sciences: weather changes that occur over a period of time (now in gr K-2) Life Science: Life cycle of plants (now in gr. 3) Life Science: plant structures, classification, and function (now in gr. 3) Physical Science: changes can be classified as chemical or physical Physical Science: Objects can be described by the properties of materials from which they are made (now in K-1) Physical Science: matter has different stats with different properties (now in gr. 3)

WHAT S COMING Changes in Curriculum Changes in Assessment Changes in Instruction
The Research It is what teachers get students to do in the class that emerges as the strongest component of the accomplished teachers repertoire, rather than what that teacher specifically does. Hattie, J. 2009
The Research An analysis of NELS data found that students in restructured schools where authentic instruction was widespread experienced greater achievement gains. Lee et al., 2006 NELS = National Education Longitudinal Study
Authentic Instruction Instruction focused on Active learning in real-world contexts Higher-level thinking skills Extended writing and demonstration
Classrooms of the Future CURRENT: Teacher centered Content coverage Memorizing information Textbook dependent FUTURE: Learner centered Learning and doing Using information Multiple sources of information
SCIENCE UNITS TO INCLUDE: Student performance expectations have to include a student s ability to apply a practice to content knowledge, thereby focusing on understanding and application as opposed to memorization of facts devoid of context. E N G A G E
SCIENCE UNITS TO INCLUDE: 21st Century Skills: 21st century skills are integral to the science standards and curriculum development revision documents. They are an essential part of the model curriculum component through the incorporation and integration of scientific inquiry, science skills and process and technological and engineering design. As enumerated by Am. Sub. H.B. 1, these skills include: creativity and innovation; critical thinking, problem solving and communication; information, media and technological literacy; personal management, productivity, accountability, leadership and responsibility; and interdisciplinary, project-based, realworld learning opportunities E X P L A I N
SCIENCE UNITS TO INCLUDE: Technological Design: Technological design is a problem or project-based way of applying creativity, science, engineering and mathematics to meet a human need or want. Modern science is an integrated endeavor. Technological design integrates learning by using science, technology, engineering and mathematics and fosters 21st Century Skills. E X P L O R E
SCIENCE UNITS TO INCLUDE: Technology and Engineering: Technology modifies the natural world through innovative processes, systems, structures and devices to extend human abilities. Engineering is design under constraint that develops and applies technology to satisfy human needs and wants. Technology and engineering, coupled with the knowledge and methods derived from science and mathematics, profoundly influence the quality of life. E L A B O R A T E
SCIENCE UNITS TO INCLUDE: A scientific explanation requires evidence to support the explanation, so students will be called upon to construct a model for the purpose of gathering evidence to explain these changes. Students will need a deep understanding of the content, as well as proficiency in the ability to construct and use models for various applications. The practice of modeling will need to be taught throughout the year and throughout the entire K 12 experience as opposed to during one two-week unit of instruction. E N G A G E
SCIENCE UNITS TO INCLUDE: engineering and technology provide opportunities for students to deepen their understanding of science by applying their developing scientific knowledge to the solution of practical problems. Both positions converge on the powerful idea that by integrating technology and engineering into the science curriculum teachers can empower their students to use what they learn in their everyday lives. E N G A G E
SCIENCE LESSONS TO INCLUDE: One of the most important messages of the Next Generation Science Standards for teachers, parents, and students is that science is profoundly important in addressing the problems we face at the beginning of the 21st century. The purpose of science education, broadly expressed as STEM literacy, is to equip our students with the knowledge and skills essential for addressing society s needs, such as growing demand for pollution-free energy, to prevent and cure disease, to feed Earth s growing population, maintain supplies of clean water, and solve the problem of global environmental change. Just as these grand challenges inspire today s scientists and engineers, the intent of the new standards is to motivate all students to fully engage in the very active practices of science and engineering.
SCIENCE LESSONS TO INCLUDE: Students will learn to use the scientific method by asking a real world question or addressing a real world problem and investigating solutions and answers. They will learn engineering skills through problem solving by design. Both areas are essential to building a base of scientific knowledge. The scientific concepts taught will be real-world, useful, and taught through all disciplines of science. E X P L O R E
