3 3 Introduction Autodesk Structural Fabrication Suite provides a comprehensive set of tools to help streamline steel design, detailing, and fabrication. With the latest releases of Autodesk Advance Steel and Autodesk Revit software, plus Autodesk AutoCAD and Autodesk Navisworks Simulate software, you can support Building Information Modelling (BIM) workflows from design to delivery. Accelerate the detailing process by using interoperable tools like Advance Steel, Revit, and AutoCAD to better connect detailing and design. Produce more accurate model-based deliverables and help speed time to fabrication with Advance Steel. Use Navisworks Simulate to share models with contractors to support estimation, coordination, and 4D simulation in the field. Challenges The steel fabrication process faces challenges along every stage that result in impacts of products costs and schedules. When detailing and fabrication are not fully considered during the design process, teams incur costs of change orders. When designs and drawings are not accurately coordinated, bids don t have accurate information in them, and materials are not managed optimally. This results in costs of material waste and changes. Finally, when materials reach the field, a lack of coordination across the project team can affect installation and quality of the end product. 4 4 Benefits The Structural Fabrication Suite enables structural engineers & steel detailers to work in a more dynamic & collaborative environment, thanks to more connected workflows. These workflows help for: Providing a BIM model to the contractor or fabricator for quantity take-offs. Pre-detailing major details and connections to help convey detailed design intent that can be offered to the fabricator or contractor. Offering detailed structural 3D models and/or shop drawing deliverables (models, drawings, CNC files) to the fabricator. This also helps steel detailers to gain earlier insight from the design team to make the right choices and more easily manage changes from the design. Using a detailed BIM model containing accurate & accessible information helps accelerate the production of deliverables for steel fabrication and minimise possible human errors. A set of dedicated tools using ready-to-use templates (named drawing styles) automatically create shop drawings from the 3D model. For production at workshop, the products can be fabricated using Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machines, and required data (such as DSTV, XML and DXF files) automatically created from the model can be transferred to production machinery, which helps drive fabrication more efficiently. Fabrication information can be roundtrip with Management Information Systems (MIS) which are software to help reduce time, cost and wastage at workshop. Also the detailed model can be colourised in Advance Steel according to the fabrication & shipping status which helps take the right decision. The deliverables (drawings, BOMs and CN data) are linked to the underlying model, so the software automatically updates these deliverables whenever you update the model. This helps improve both productivity and quality, particularly when reacting to numerous design changes. Schedule integrated BIM (known as 4D) can be used for estimating, animations, and to prepare site logistics plans. Visualisation provides a better understanding of what the final project may look like. Real-time navigation combines with review toolset to support collaboration among the project participants, in the office, at shop and in the field.
