TO PARENTS AND GUARDIANS: TRANSPORTATION DEPARTMENT LIVINGSTON SCHOOL DISTRICT 4 & 1 PARENT / STUDENT GUIDE We hope that you find the enclosed information both helpful and useful during the coming year. Please take time to go over this information with your child. Also please sign and return the bottom portion of this page to your driver for their records. Your signature indicates that you have read the enclosed materials and have discussed the contents with your child. Welcome aboard! Your driver is a Montana licensed school bus driver, certified through the Livingston School District. The safety of your child is his/her foremost responsibility, which requires the driver s attention to be on the road ahead at all times. We ask for your cooperation and support in maintaining good bus discipline. Mutual respect and consideration is essential in sustaining the safest environment for all of our passengers. Please remember that the driver is not only responsible for your child, but also for 35 to 65 other children as well. The bus is an extension of the classroom here at Livingston School, so the conduct expected in the classroom will be expected on the bus. Please feel free to call upon your driver with any questions or concerns that you may have. The bus garage phone number is Your support will help to make this a more enjoyable school year for you and your child. Those of you, who are enrolling their students after the start of the school year, please make sure the arrangements are made. You cannot sign up at the school; you must contact the transportation office, either in person or by phone The service will not start until the transportation office has all the information needed. Livingston School Bus Drivers, will NOT tolerate any behavior that jeopardizes ourselves or our passengers in the safe operation of the Livingston School Buses. Thank you, George F. Smith Transportation Director

PARENTS AND GUARDIANS 1. Helping your child to be a responsible bus student helps keep everyone safe. Help them to be 5 minutes early at their bus stop and to take the safest route to and from the bus stop. 2. Once a student, K-12, is on the bus they become the driver s responsibility. No student will be allowed off the bus at another stop unless prior arrangements have been made through the transportation office or a signed written note is given to the bus driver. Due to the capacities of our buses, we are not able to allow extra passengers to ride. If your child is having friends over for the weekend or a birthday party etc., please notify the Transportation Office at No animals of any kind are allowed on the bus, small or large, with the exception of service type animals. [seeing eye dogs, etc.] 4. Large objects such as large band instruments, boxes, science projects, skateboards, scooters, rollerblades, and antlers need to find their own ride to school! Our children need to be safe from flying objects and sharp edges. 5. There will not be weapons of any kind allowed on the school buses. Policy # Please see that your student is properly clothed for the cold weather. Brighter clothes are better for their visibility and safety during periods of darkness and heavy overcast days. Backpacks with long strings of collectables should not be carried on the bus as they can cause serious injury by being caught in handrails, doors, etc. 7. A consistent and firm discipline policy is of great importance in maintaining a safe and secure atmosphere for all passengers on a school bus. Please remember that there are always two sides to every story. If your student is having a problem be sure to notify the bus driver or the transportation office, , as soon as possible. This way we can work with everyone involved. 8. Help your student learn all of the bus rules and explain the importance of following the instructions of their bus driver. Everyone s safety is important 9. It is the driver s responsibility to follow written district policy on discipline. When a rule is broken the bus driver will give a verbal warning to the student. If the behavior persists, the bus driver will issue a one day transportation suspension notice to the student. The district will also make an attempt to make phone contact to notify students and parents that their transportation privileges for the following day have been revoked. Students ride privileges will be restored the day following the suspension. The next infraction will require a meeting with the principal, student and parent. Transportation services of that student will be suspended until said meeting takes place. Transportation services could be denied up to seven school days. On the third incident, a meeting is held and riding privileges may be terminated for the remainder of the school year. If the behavior is severe, it may result in a longer suspension period up to and including the remainder of the school year. 10. The transportation department will use video cameras to monitor the students on the school bus.

11. Get to know your student s bus driver and let the driver know of any problems or concerns you may have. Be sure to let the transportation office know of any medical problems your student might have, so the bus driver will be aware of any medical situation that could arise.

You Have a Responsibility as a School District Bus Student 1. To follow the directions of the bus driver. Sit quietly and listen to instructions. Follow directions immediately and without question when there is an emergency. Your safety and the safety of the other riders could depend on your careful listening! 2. To always be 5 minutes early for your bus. Wait quietly at least 10 feet from the edge of the road or street. 3. To be respectful of the bus stop area. These areas are private property. Please keep them litter free. 4. To board the bus and be seated quickly. Delays cause other to wait. 5. To be safe while riding the bus. Roughhousing, changing seats, loud disturbances, foul language, yelling, and whistling are distracting to the driver, and could compromise your safety. 6. To remain in your seat. 7. To remember that school rules apply on the bus as well as school property. 8. To keep food and drinks in closed containers. Inside of backpacks or lunch boxes. Not to be eaten on the bus. 9. To remember that you will have to pay for any damage to the bus. 10. To protect other motorists and pedestrians by not throwing objects from the bus. Remember, everyone has the right to a SAFE and PLEASANT ride to and from school. The bus ride is a PRIVILEGE and a service to you parents. Please don t lose it!

Policy Number 8124P The Livingston School Transportation Department is designed to provide safe and efficient transportation for students living in rural areas around Livingston. Students who live more than 3 miles from their school are eligible to ride on buses for free. Students K --12 who live less than 3 miles from their school may ride for a set fee, established by the Livingston School Board, if they are on a regular bus route and if there is available seating on the bus. Parents of students who live less than 3 miles and desire transportation must register their students and pay the required fee, with the transportation office prior, to the start of bus service The Livingston School Board may authorize bus service for children attending a private school, provided that space is available and a fee is collected. Special transportation is available for IDEA children when their Individual Education Plan (IEP) reflects such a need. Bus routes follow most of the main roads for the safety of the children. Route lengths are limited by distance and time as well as coordinating with Park County and Montana D.O.T. snow plowing and sanding priorities. The transportation department also provides service for all student field trips and extra curricular activities. Your child s comfort and safety is extremely important to us. We are very proud of our bus fleet and take great pride in transporting your children in a safe and comfortable environment.
