Bourbonnais Elementary School District #53 Rules and Expectations for Student Conduct on the School Bus
Be at the bus stop on time. Do not make the bus driver and other students wait for you. Be ready to board the bus at your pick up time.
Behave in an orderly, proper manner at the bus stop. All rules for personal conduct in your school apply at all bus stops. Do not run, play tag or chase, throw objects, or engage in any activity that is against school rules.
Show care and respect for the property around the bus stop. Follow all school rules at the bus stop! Do not damage, abuse, or destroy any property including bus stop signs, city property, and private property near the bus stop.
Return home if you miss your bus. Never run after a missed school bus. Running after a bus is very dangerous. The driver may not be aware that a student is trying to get their attention, and cars on the street may not be watching for students running after a bus. Never chase a bus.
Board and get off busses at your designated stop only. Do not get off at a friend s house. Do not board the bus at any other pick up other than the one assigned to you. Never ride a bus other than your own.
After boarding the bus sit straight forward with both legs in the seating area. Do not sit on your knees. Do not slump down in your seat and put your knees or feet on the seat in front of you. Do not turn around in your seat or sit with your feet or legs in the aisle of the bus. Get on the bus, sit down and stay seated.
Always wait until the bus comes to a complete stop before leaving your seat. Keep your arms and legs out of the aisle.
No arguing, fighting, roughhousing, throwing objects, etc. Never fight, wrestle, roughhouse, or purposely hit another student while on the bus. This includes throwing objects.
Use courtesy when speaking. Rough or obscene language is not allowed. Always use appropriate language when riding the bus. Bad language, disrespect, cursing, teasing or bullying will not be allowed and may be cause for a bus suspension or removal.
Talk only to students sitting in the same seat as you. Never turn around to talk to a student in another seat. Do not raise your voice to speak with students in other parts of the bus. Only speak quietly with the students who are sitting in your seat.
Ride the bus only when you are on the passenger list. Guests are not permitted.
NO Vandalism, or the destruction, defacing, or ruining of bus seats, bus mechanisms, tools, or personal property is not tolerated. If a student chooses to vandalize any part of the school bus, or is found to vandalize another student s property while riding the bus, the student may be responsible for the cost of the repair for the damages and bus suspension or removal.
Keep arms and heads inside the bus windows. Obviously these girls are not following this rule. Never stick your head, arms, or any other part of your body outside the bus windows. Serious injury can occur if this rule is not observed
Leave food or drinks at home, or if they are part of your lunch, carry them aboard unopened. It is dangerous to eat food or drink liquids while the bus is in operation. Also food can easily spill and create a mess on the bus. Absolutely no eating on the bus. No eating or drinking on the bus.
Animals or pets of any kind, no matter how small or large, are not allowed at any time on the bus. Leave animals and other creatures at home
Bring only small items on the bus. Large items can block the isle making it difficult for the driver to safely operate the bus. Also large items take up lots of space and are difficult to get on and off the bus. If you have a large item such as a project for school, make plans to have the item delivered.
Be totally quiet at all railroad crossings. When transporting students it is mandated by law that all school buses stop at all railroad crossings. The bus driver must then open the door and listen for an on coming train. It is very important that all students cease all conversation when crossing railroad tracks, giving the driver the best opportunity to look and listen for a train. Train/Bus collisions are rare, but when they occur, the results are catastrophic.
Safety Procedures
Obey the bus driver at all times
Keep the aisles clear
Board the bus.. And exit the bus Using manners, caution, and courtesy for other students.
Always stay back at least five big steps from the curb or street where your bus stop is located
Always choose the safest route to get to your bus stop. Never take a short cut, climb over fences, or cut through yards or alleys to get to you stop.
When boarding or exiting the bus, always use the hand rail.
When walking in front of the bus, always walk around the yellow arm. This allows the bus driver to see you and make sure your safe.
Safety Zone
Never Chase Items Under the Bus!
Use the rear door for emergencies only. The rear door of a school bus is for the emergency evacuation of students riding the bus. There is a latch across the door. A alarm will sound if the door is opened. Never open this door or lift the latch that locks this door unless it is an emergency.
Know The Safety Exits. Roof Exit Side Window Exits Front Door Exit Back Door Exit
Never Throw Snow! at the Bus Stop or at School
Bus Video Camera You are being watched by a video camera all the time!
Be sure to observe these rules and expectations while riding the bus this school year. When we re careful and follow the rules of the school bus, every student will arrive at their destinations quickly and safely.
