Every student is responsible for checking the Blackboard site to obtain detailed assignments, announcements and updates to course requirements. Once something is posted on Blackboard, it is assumed that the student has read it. There will be no announcements, and the professor will not necessarily use class time to call attention to items posted on Blackboard. 2. Course textbook Baltzan, Paige. M: Information Systems 2nd Edition. McGraw-Hill, other readings Additional readings will be assigned during the course of the semester. Either the reading itself or a link to the reading will be posted on Blackboard. other materials You need a user-id and password for the Simnet interactive learning system for Office If you buy the SDSU version of the textbook at the bookstore Simnet is included. Or, you can buy Simnet access separately at Many class meetings will feature a short quiz. You must bring a Scantron 882-E form to every class meeting. These are available in the SDSU bookstore. The instructor will NOT have forms available for those who forget to bring one. Semester project and self-paced instruction in Office tools description You are expected to gain familiarity and proficiency in the use of Microsoft Excel and Access during this course. The primary means of instruction will be through the use of Simnet. You will access the system at specific assignments for self-paced training There will be one research project assignment for you to complete on an individual basis. You are expected to complete the online self-paced training according to the detailed schedule below. It is important to keep up with the training. During some class meetings there will be a short quiz, designed to be easy if you have completed the assigned training modules, but not so easy otherwise. These quizzes will count toward your semester grade (see Grading below). Although we will not use a lot of class time to learn about Excel and Access, you should bring up any questions or problems during class. You should also come to office hours for help if you are unsure about anything. semester research project Simnet Assignments During Unit 3 of the course you will use the Free Mind software to create a mind map related to research questions that will be assigned on Blackboard. The detailed requirements and grading criteria for the project will be posted on the Blackboard ASSIGNMENTS tab. 3 5. Class participation 6. Exams requirement Attendance in class is required. Attendance will be taken during some, but not all, class meetings. It will happen at the beginning of the class period. You must be on time to class to be marked present. There is no need to contact the professor to give reasons for an absence unless the circumstances fall into a category covered by university policy (see Policies topic below). photo You must a digital photo of yourself to the instructor to get credit for attendance and participation in class. This will also be posted as an assignment on Blackboard. Use the subject line MIS 180 Section 3 photo and attach the photo as a.jpg file type using the file name <last name>,<first name>.jpg participation Participation is more than mere attendance. Extra-credit will be awarded for class participation that goes beyond mere attendance. To earn this you must make a memorable, favorable impression on the professor on a consistent basis throughout the semester. punctuality and courtesy To get extra credit for participation you must show that you are fully engaged with the classroom experience by asking and answering questions, participating in class discussions, and observing the other requirements stated in this syllabus. The sooner you your photo the easier it will be for the professor to learn your name and keep track of participation. Delay in getting your photograph ed may adversely affect your participation credit. Please do not habitually come to class late or leave early. Be considerate of the other students in the class. Habitual violations of common-sense classroom etiquette will result in deductions from your class attendance grade. This includes side conversations, sleeping, etc. general Two exams will be given. Exams are naturally cumulative, but the final will emphasize material from the second half of the course. study guide for exams There will be nothing given to you called a study guide for either exam. But, you are in fact getting a study guide: Every class session we cover material that might be on an exam, and explain what you are expected to know about it. If you prepare for every class (i.e., do the reading assignments), pay attention, and ask questions in class and during office hours, you should do very well. There are no trick questions, and all questions on the exams will come from: topics from assigned reading that we talked about in class, or material covered in the online Simnet assignments. 4 dates Midterm: October 9 Final: December 13 These dates are fixed, regardless of any other changes to the course schedule. There will be no special accommodations or makeup exams unless the circumstances are covered by university policy (see Policies topic below). Students will receive a score of zero for any missed exam not excused for policy reasons. If you know that you will be absent on one of these dates, you should drop the course. 7. Evaluation format Most of each exam will be multiple choice questions. There may be a few fillin-the-blank or analytical questions that will require a short answer. A Scantron 882-E form is required for both exams quizzes Unannounced quizzes will be given during class. Students must have a Scantron 882-E available at all times in case there is a quiz. The quiz questions will cover the readings, lectures, and homework assignments, including the self-paced Office tools tutorials. If you are late to class or absent and miss all or part of a quiz you cannot make it up. semester grade The semester grade will be determined by weighting the student s scores for the midterm, final, Simnet training, project, quizzes, and attendance. The lowest quiz score will be dropped. There will be no other considerations or accommodations for making up quizzes or exams except as covered by university policy. weighting Midterm: 20% Final: 25% Simnet (graded credit/nocredit): 20% Semester project: 10% Quizzes: 15% Attendance: 10% grades The final grade is determined by the percentage of available points that has been earned: 90% or better: A-, A 80% or better: B-, B, B+ 70% or better: C-, C, C+ 60% or better: D-, D, D+ less than 60%: F A decision to use a curve to raise the average grade may occur, depending on the class average. It is not anticipated that the use of a curve will lower anyone s grade. status Students will be able to track their current point percentage on Blackboard throughout the course as points are earned. Policies excused absences After succeeding in this course, students will be able to: Recognize the importance of determining information system requirements for all management levels and identify the differences between various types of information systems. Identify how the computer revolution has impacted the conduct of business, recognize the central role of information in the modern organization, and recognize the relationships between business strategy and IT strategy Use critical-thinking skills in identifying information systems problems, identifying the strategic impact of business intelligence, and analyzing ways that IT-enabled organizational forms offer new strategic options for a business Identify how information systems are developed and how to investigate existing literature about hardware and software solutions to problems. Identify the components and functions of computer systems, both hardware and software, as well as the advances in networking, data communications and the Internet and how they affect the way business is conducted. Identify which information technology tools are used to solve various business problems. Solve business problems using modern productivity tools (e.g., spreadsheet, database) or creating custom programs. University policy defines circumstances under which examinations may be rescheduled due to absence. Students who fall into these categories have a responsibility to notify the professor of the circumstances and request accommodation. Major documented illnesses or death in the family may also result in accommodation if the professor is notified in a timely fashion. Any event that is or should be foreseeable at the start of the semester will not be an excused absence unless specifically covered by University policy. cheating Cheating is defined as attempting to take credit for misrepresented work. This includes giving or receiving help on any graded work in this course without permission from the professor, cheating during exams (including obtaining advance knowledge of test questions), submitting alterations to graded work for regrading, and plagiarism (i.e., taking credit for someone else s words as if they were your own). Any student caught cheating will receive an F for the course, will be reported to Judicial Procedures, and will be recommended for expulsion from the College of Business. 6 grade changes Students may request a regrading of an assignment or exam if they believe the original grade was unjust. However, the regrading will be zero based. That is, the student risks receiving a lower rather than a higher grade as a result of the review. Final grades are assigned based on a student s performance in this course, not on the basis of what grade the student needs in order to maintain a GPA. No changes to final course grades will be entered unless the original grade was given by mistake. (Don t even ask.) 9. Changes This syllabus is preliminary, and may be changed as needed at the discretion of the professor.
