Ling 114Project 2 Conversation Analysis * sentences 10~110 in data Transcript Amy Bridget A a (5:54). * In the following table, {.[.]} means I found one kind of speech act for the whole sentence { }, and a sub-speech act in the indirect sentence [ ]. 0 Conversation Turn I KNOW Speech Act Maxims Direct Indirect Flouted Maxims 1 ((laughs)) anyway yeah 2 they re in Dubuque.. Christmas shopping Agreement, topic change 3 and [Amanda-] Analyze This ' I know ' flouts quantity. It is short for 'I know that we can tape anything' and this comes from the previous conversation. Starting from 'Anyway', the conversation starts from a new topic. brings in the topic of Christmas shopping and try to move from this topic to what happened between she and Amanda. Assuming knows about Dubuque, Christmas shopping and who Amanda is, this conversations actually now begins from 's point of view. 4 [making] an evening of it? Describe, speculate, metaphor Manner, uses a metaphor here. Her question seems to have nothing to with Christmas shopping. She means 'they are out for Christmas shopping, oh that should be the big sale start around six, wow that will spend them a whole evening, are they going to do that?' 5 making an evening of it. Repetition, Agreement, confirm, and strengthen the degree of agreement repeated the same sentence rather than giving a yes/no question, to confirm and show agreement. No new information is offered. It flouts quantity
7 [I see] 8 six o clock, Agreement shows agreement by saying 'I see', but did not say what she saw. She wants to show that she is listening and she wants to say, oh you agree with my of 'making an evening of it.' I understand that you agree with me. did not talk much about what 'they' are going to do around six o'clock. But understands this. She understands they are still talking about Christmas shopping. flouts manner by briefly saying 'they decided about six o'clock'. She used time to refer to the Thanksgiving sale. She assumes will understand this according to the settings (context, time, schedule, background knowledge.) 9 oh really? Surprised 10 that s so late to be [home] 11 [oh] they ll be gone a while 12 [((laughs))] Expressive Agreement No new information provided Both girls agree with each other by laughing. 13 [yeah] 14 so- so you re gonna be HOME then?= interrogativ es, question 15 ((laughs)) Expressive, other's words, description All of a sudden starts a new sentence that is irrelevant to shopping. It flouts relevance. She is re-stating other people's words. Her sentences is a interrogative, but its not a question. Its an, meaning 'They said that 3
16 or will you be just gonna hangin around with? 17 I m like yeah, probably interrogativ 18 well GOOD, other's words ( other's words), other's words 4 (the restated sentence) (the restated sentence) 19 ha [ha ha] Expressive? 20 [ua::h] Expressive we re going shopping, and you can take care of Amanda 23 when she gets back., other's words, other s words, but the repeated words has a request., other's words and manner? (the restated sentence) 24 so::? The same with line 14, continues restating a conversation The same with line 14, continues restating a conversation. There is a flouting within this re-stated conversation. flouts quantity by saying the sentence really short. By saying 'yeah, probably, she means: yes, I think there is a high percentage that I will be hanging around with.' The same with line 14, continues restating a conversation I feel like s laugh means 'You agree with me right? This conversation is interesting in some way right?' shows that she is listening, and she says 'uah' to mean I am hearing, I understand, you can keep talking. What happened next? According to the next answer, it seems catches this and keeps on talking about the conversation By using 'you can', the speaker is actually requesting to take care of Amanda. This is a more polite way to ask for someone's favor. This is the same with line 20, where wants to keep on talking about what happened after this conversation.
25 so I was like well, sure 26 like I mean we might we might- we might have gotten a movie well just wait till she gets BACK and then she- [((laughs))] A statement as a whole, and agreement in 'Well.'part { [Explanation, suggestion]} { [stating possibility]} { [suggestion, persuasion]} (the restated sentence) 29 [mmh] Expressive ((laughs)) but I was like {Description 30 well, I don t know [rejection]} 31 cause like we don t have a car or anything 32 yeah. In the restated 33 I suppose we might just be hanging around sentence: rejection 34 hanging Agreement Similar to line17. flouts brevity. The full version is 'Well, you want me to take care of Amanda, I think I can, though I am not preparing to do that, whatever, okay then.' She explains what she mean by 'well, sure' but did not ask her to do so. She is offering more information than asked. was not asked to talk about her plan, so here 's words are irrelevant. She offered a possibility which indicate 'I might be busy then, I want you to know that I don t want to spend time and take care of Amanda. I am not going to fulfill your request' May be its 's mother, she is still trying to persuade to take care of Amanda by ignoring 's answer in line 27 I don t know is short for 'I don t know whether we can wait until she gets back.' By explaining to 's mother, who asks to take care of Amanda in sentence 3, tries to reject this request, and she came up with this reason, she is thinking: 'I don t have a car, I do not have the ability to take her out,' repeated this word. It sounds like she is bot only agreeing with, but also ironic a little bit. senses s rejection to her mother. She says hanging, which actually is short for 'oh, come on, we are not hanging around now, I understand you, you don't want to spend time waiting for Amanda. 5
35 36 and she was like GOOD well then we can go SHOpp[ing ] {Description, [dislike]} Quality 's mother's says GOOD, which actually means okay, I don t like your answer, that's not good, but, whatever, I'll just take it back. 37 [((laughs))] Expressive Agreement ((laughs)) and I said sure I know I'm so tired Agreement Quality we were all over to Dubuque today assert Short for 'I know what you are talking about, I also feels very tired. 's about Dubuque seems irrelevant to 'tired', but both interlocutors have not trouble understand it, because there conversation is based on several presupposes. One of the presuppose is that they are both tired because of an event in Dubuque. 41 oh yeah Agreement 42 bopping around Agreement 43 oh jeez Expressive Agreement 44 I had to- uhm (1.0) Dislike does not say who is bopping around where. It flouts quantity. She means, 'I agree with you, we were all bopping around in Dubuque today, and we are all very tired. again shows agreement. The expressive sentence is short for 'Oh jeez, were indeed bopping around, we are so tired.' starts to talk about another topic. By saying 'have to', she means she does not like the event that she is going to talk about. 45 to get fitted for my bridesmaid dress 46 o::h Expressive 47 oh God Expressive 6
48 I was like ready to tell Moira I couldn't be in her wedding. Explanation of a rejection 49 [I swear] Regret? 50 [oh ho ho] Expressive does it? the dress is-.. it looks really bad on me= Explanation of a rejection 53 in my opinion 54 it's not my style at all 55 I [imagine] ; ask for further Explanation Quality 56 [you know-] I [mean-] Explanation starts to talk about a wedding ceremony. She wants to bring in a new topic. Based on the assumption that knows what wedding she is talking about, this sentence means 'I am telling you what I think. I don t want to go to Moira's wedding. But I did not tell her. Now I want you to know. You are my friend and I want to share my feeling with you.' did not talk about who is Moira, when her wedding is, etc. No information about the wedding is talked about. This utterance is based on a lot of presupposes. It flouts quantity because it is not providing enough information Not enough information provided. 'I swear that I am ready to tell her that.' Still this expressive sentence has more meaning that a simple sigh. What wants to express is 'Oh ho ho, I understand you, you want to tell her but you didn t, I understand that you are feeling bad about this. No one asks to talk about how the dress looks. She wants to tell why she does not want to go to the wedding. Short for 'Does it really looks bad on you? Why?' Short for 'In my opinion, it looks bad on me, because.' Short for 'I can not imagine what it looks like', rather than I am imagining what kind of dress looks bad on you, means she cannot imagine of a bad dress. She asks for further Explanation. Short for 'I can not find a proper way to describe how it looks good now, its not easy to tell.' 7
57 [what color] is it? 8 Manner The phrase 'you know' flouts manner, it makes the sentence obscure, I know what? I don t know! Sensing the difficulty in describing the badness of the dress, provides a detailed question and try to figure out what mean by 'its not my style at all' 58 it's midnight blue 59 I mean that's nice. Explanation Short for 'I mean the color is nice' 60 uh-huh Expressive 'Okay, listen, I am going to talk about the real 61 okay problem with the dress' but it's got like these 62 Dislike puffy sleeves. 63 uh-huh Expressive 64 not.. fa:t Explanation According to the intonation, there is a flouting of quantity going on here. By saying fa::t with a long flat vowel, means "you know puffy sleeves are a little bit fat than normal sleeves, and this puffy sleeve fat, but not overfat. It s a normal puffy sleeve. 65 but-= Explanation 66 uh-huh Expressive 67 I don't like puffy sleeves Explanation 68 no. Agreement Quality The 'no' here actually means 'Yes, I know you do not like puffy sleeves.' I understand you. 69 and then.. it's- likeokay. 70 there's hardly anything.. between.. the sleeves Description 71 I mean there's not like a- a real neckline Explanation 72 uh-huh Expressive 73 so you can t really wear something with straps Explanation
74 you [know] Expressive Ask for agreement 75 [oh yeah] 76 [so] it's almost coming off your shoulders Description Short for ' you know what I am talking about right?' 77 oh yeah Agreement shows agreement and then it comes do:wn like- I don't know- like in a square almost 80 oh jeez Expressive Description Description Agreement, dislike Short for 'Oh jeez, its like in a square? Then that is not going to look well.' 81 and real lo:w Description 82 and you got- you know 83 you're sma::ll Agreement Short for 'You ve got a small figure, we both know that you have a small body and that is not suitable for a low neck. 84 ah [yeah::] Agreement [you've] small.. shoulders and stuff= =and sm- ha ha ha [YEAH] Explanation Agreement [and] I mean- Explanation 88 I know Agreement 89 it- it- a:h- Description 90 and then you know Quality Short for 'I know I have a small body and that is not suitable for a low neck. tries to gave further Explanation on ' you're sma::ll ' in sentence 83 agrees with 's of her being sma::ll. was not asked to explain any more, but she still wants to explain what she means by sma::l, but seems she is out of word. Short for 'I know you understand what I mean, I know you don t like puffy sleeves with low neck.' Actually what means is 'You won't know this, listen, there is more about the dress' 9
91 92 it's supposed to be tealength but comes down to practically my ankles= 93 [right] 94 [=so] they have to adjust it 95 [right] [I have] to pay extra for it they have to take it off from the shoulders Quality Quality Quality uh-huh you have to PAY for [all this?] Quality 100 [oh yeah] Agreement Quality This means 'keep talking, I understand.' and it flouts quality if we see it as 'You are right, if its is supposed to be tea-length, then it should not be that long.' It flouts quality because the agreement means 'You are right, if the length is not good, than you need to adjust it.' Money is not talked about before; here this topic is brough in based on the context. They talk about adjust the dress, and adjusting a dress needs labor. assumes can see the relationship between money and dress. means 'they have to take the puffy sleeve off', but she did not specify what 'it' means. Short for 'Do you have to pay for this extra tailoring work?' Short for 'Oh, yeah, you are right, I have to pay for all this, and I don t like it. 10
