1 WIDER KEY SKILLS EXAMPLE PORTFOLIOS. These portfolios are the result of a project to produce resource for Hyfforddiant Gwynedd Training. The aim of the project was to produce a range of example portfolios for the Wider Key Skills at Levels 1-3. These portfolios may be used as examples for Centres and Key Skill practitioners to consider when identifying best practice for candidates or designing recording documentation. The following portfolios can be downloaded from the website: Problem Solving at Level 3, Working with Others at Level 2 and Improving Own Learning and Performance at Level 1. The portfolios are taken from real situations, which reflect a range of activities, all of which were meaningful to the candidates, with evidence being generated from their main subject/work areas. A general weakness in wider Key Skills portfolios is both the lack of evidence of the processes used to achieve the various tasks and what the candidate has learned about the process whilst studying, working with other people and problem solving. Often, the evidence presented reflects the candidate s concentration on the task rather than the processes used during its completion. These portfolios illustrate how these process skills can be recorded and appropriate evidence presented. Key Skill practitioners may find it helpful to refer to and discuss these portfolios when considering approaches to evidence gathering. We particularly recommend the use of documentation reflecting the evidence of process skills required in all of the wider Key Skills to indicate the candidate s understanding of Part A. This part of the specification is not externally tested, but some of the knowledge must be checked by the assessor by either direct questioning or candidate responses. Centres need to appreciate that these portfolios reflect extensive use of OCR recording documentation alongside comprehensive product evidence. When compiling portfolios, Centres should note that volume is not a measure of quality. Evidence should be carefully selected to show that the criteria have been met for each component of a key skill. 1 It is not mandatory to use OCR recording documentation; any appropriate documentation may be used. However, the OCR documentation has been designed to help ensure that all the requirements of the specifications will be met and it is therefore recommended. OCR would like to thank ELWa for funding the original project and those Centres and candidates who contributed portfolio evidence. 1 Guidance on the wider key skills, QCA 2001

3 Key Skills Portfolio Evidence Standards Moderator s Comments Key Skill: Improving Own Learning and Performance Level: 1 Context: Criteria Portfolio of evidence from a candidate on a training programme to develop employment skills. Comments The candidate has provided evidence of taking part in three reviews. Targets are set during the discussions of 17/10/01 and 9/11/01 (IOLP1.1). The discussions on 9/11/01 and 7/12/01 are used to review progress (IOLP1.3). This meets the requirements of having worked through two plans. IOLP1.1 IOLP1.2 The appropriate person leads and sets targets at this level. Two Action Plans have been prepared with suitable action points to meet the targets and dates for their achievement. Personal targets as well as learning targets have been set which is a valuable part of the process but they do not need action points. In the assessment record there is evidence that the candidate has confirmed the arrangements. The evidence meets the requirements: - two examples of studying a straightforward subject - two examples of learning through a straightforward practical activity Requests for support are recorded. The learning methods are suited to purpose. This is confirmed by the assessor s testimony in the Assessment Record. IOLP1.3 The candidate reviewed his progress with his assessor on two occasions. The basis of the discussion was the questions (Log Sheet). The targets that were achieved and what was learnt were recorded. The assessor s comments are recorded in the Assessment Record. There is record of how performance can be improved further. The evidence fully meets the requirements for level

32 Personal Statement Dafydd Llwyd I have attended a course at Training Ltd since October. I have enjoyed the course and have learnt a lot. I will have a better chance of finding work when I finish the course. I have been learning how to use computers and how to drive a Forklift. Have enjoyed driving the Forklift. It was fun driving backwards and forwards across the unit and there was plenty of room. It was difficult to keep within the yellow lines, but I was able to do it very well by the end. I was disappointed that I did not pass the test. Mr Jones said that I had done very well. I only failed on 4 things passed on 24. I need more practice. I learnt about Health and Safety and I passed the test. I have learnt a lot about computers. how to Word Process and how to use the Internet. Some things were difficult and I did not have much patience with them. I m glad I kept at it although things were difficult at times. Because I ve been to hospital I missed two days of training on the Forklift. I need to improve my Forklift driving so that I can have a driving licence and I need to spend more time on the Internet.
