1 Volunteer Application Instructions Non-Licensed HIV/STI Test Counselor Recruitment open until May 30, 2012 at 5:00 pm Dear Applicant, Thank you for your interest in volunteering at Magnet, a program of the San Francisco AIDS Foundation, as a non-licensed HIV/STI Test Counselor. About nine years ago, Magnet opened it s doors to promote the physical, mental and social well-being of gay men. We reflect the diversity and values of gay men who live, work or play in the San Francisco, seeking the participation and support of gay men to create and sustain the health and well-being of our community. In 2012, Magnet will see over 15,000 gay and bi men in our sexual health services clinic from the San Francisco Bay Area. We ll display the art of twelve different artists. We ll host open mic nights and ballroom dancing. And we could not do any of this without the help of volunteers folks from right here in our community. The position of HIV/STI Test Counselor is highly sought after and Magnet is able to only send the most qualified candidates to attend the required training. Volunteer HIV/STI Test Counselors perform HIV test counseling/testing and sexually transmitted infection (STI) screenings for gay and bisexual men. Volunteer HIV/STI test counselors deliver services under supervision of Magnet s HIV Services and Clinical Services Managers. Magnet is looking to bring on four to five new volunteer counselors during this recruitment period. You must be able to commit to volunteering for a period of at least one year; also to volunteer at least twice a month. Volunteer shifts are about four hours long. There is a need for volunteers whose availability includes day-time hours, i.e. 11:00 am to about 5:30 pm. Additionally, applicants who speak Spanish or an Asian language are highly encouraged to apply. Those selected for this position must become certified (and maintain certification) by the State of California to provide HIV counseling and testing; become certified to collect blood specimens by finger stick method; complete STI education & orientation at Magnet, and complete orientation to Magnet s procedural process for providing STI/HIV screenings. The required class is taught by San Francisco Department of Public Health and is called Basic Counselor Information Training. Training is scheduled July 24, 25, 26, 27. Please understand that the training is four days long and is from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm each day. You must attend all parts of this course in order to become certified. Applicants must also complete Magnet volunteer orientation, a two-hour introduction to HIV testing class, and at least two observation shifts before this training. Here are the general functions of volunteers in this position: 1. Performing pre- and post-test counseling for gay/bisexual men per State and County guidelines and Magnet s policies; 2. Documenting activities in medical records and logs; 3. Collecting blood specimens using finger stick collection method; running rapid HIV tests; 4. Delivering negative and positive test results; 5. Obtaining specimen for gonorrhea and Chlamydia screening (i.e., collecting throat, urine, and rectal specimens).

2 Additional responsibilities include assisting clinic reception services staff, general administrative support, filing, maintaining client records, facilities management, and other duties as assigned. All Magnet volunteers must provide proof of a negative PPD (TB test) within the last year and hepatitis B immunity, either natural or acquired, before starting volunteer service.
