1 SKL Class XL Application Instructions Thank you for your interest in the Stanley K. Lacy Executive Leadership Series (SKL). Please read the Application Instructions in full before completing your application. Please direct all questions to Rebecca King, SKL Program Director, at or Before You Get Started 1. Review the program, attendance and time requirements. Review the tentative class schedule and be sure you can commit to it and the attendance and time requirements, should you be accepted to participate in the program. Tentative Class Schedule (Final schedule will be included in acceptance letters) Thursday, September 17, 2015 Orientation (5:30 7:30PM) mandatory in full Thursday, Oct. 1 Friday, Oct. 2 Opening Retreat (2 full days, 1 overnight) mandatory in full Wednesday, October 21 Wednesday, November 18 Wednesday, December 16 Wednesday, January 20, 2016 Wednesday, February 17 Wednesday, March 16 Wednesday, April 20 Wednesday, May 18 Thursday, June 16 Friday, June 17 Closing Retreat (2 full days, 1 overnight) mandatory in full Attendance is mandatory at the Orientation, the Opening Retreat, Closing Retreat and at least 80% of the monthly class days (which is the equivalent to one missed class day). Failure to meet these requirements will jeopardize the class member s graduation and alumni status. Additionally, time outside of the class days is necessary, including small group work, class day preparation and optional social time. Time outside of class ranges from 5-15 hours per month. 2. Make arrangements for payment of the $1200 program fee, should you be accepted into the program. The program fee may be paid for by an applicant s employer, sponsor, or by the applicant. Payment is made upon selection into the program. Your sponsor is required to complete the Sponsor Commitment Form, which is in Part I of the application. If you plan to pay the program fee yourself, please complete the Sponsor Commitment Form yourself, as you are your own sponsor. SKL Class XL Application Instructions

2 Four scholarships are available to assist qualified applicants. Scholarships may cover full or partial tuition, depending on the needs of class members each year. The Lacy Scholarship funds one or more qualified individuals on a needs basis. The Leadership Indianapolis Scholarship funds one or more motivated and committed individuals who may not otherwise be able to participate. Special consideration is given to those from non-profit organizations or government entities. The Lacy Family Arts Scholarship funds an individual working in a non-profit arts/cultural organization. The Edna B. Lacy Scholarship funds a building-based, professional educator in the Indianapolis Public Schools system. To apply for one of these scholarships, include a one-page letter of request with your SKL Class XL application. Include the name of the scholarship you are applying for, your reason for applying for it and why you believe you are a strong candidate for the scholarship. Attach your letter as the last page of Part I of your application. If you are applying for a scholarship and cannot secure a sponsor, do not fill out the sponsor form, but do include your request letter for scholarship funds. If you are applying for a scholarship and can secure a sponsor, do complete the sponsor form and include your request letter. 3. Get the approval and support of your employer. Your immediate supervisor is required to fill out the Employer Commitment Form, which is in Part I of the application. If you are self-employed or are the head of your organization, you do not need to complete this form. 4. Gather three references who are knowledgeable about your leadership experience and skills and your community service. Do not use people within your current employer or family members as references. Each of your references is required to sign the reference form. Reference letters are not requested and are not included in the selection process. Completing the Application 1. Do not include any identifying information about yourself in Part II of the application, including your name, your current and previous employers, etc. Instead, use broad terms to describe an organization (such as large healthcare company, law firm, etc.). This is to ensure the anonymous nature of the selection process. 2. Check your grammar and spelling. Ask friends or colleagues to proof your application. 3. Ask someone to review your application and make suggestions for improvement. Consider asking a colleague, an SKL grad, or someone who knows you well to do this for you. You may even consider asking multiple people to review your application. 4. Provide thoughtful, but concise, answers to all of the questions on the application. 5. Read and follow the application instructions. For example, you ll see we ask that you not use people you work with for references. Instead, use people who demonstrate your level of community involvement. SKL Class XL Application Instructions

3 6. Be sure your submitted application is complete and contains all required forms and signatures (including your own). 7. Invest a significant amount of time in completing the application. SKL is a highly competitive program and you want to submit your best effort. 8. Vary your examples when requested. Avoid using one example multiple times. 9. Be specific in demonstrating your leadership achievement. This is not the time to be shy. Tell us about your leadership and your contributions. 10. Be distinctive. Find ways to stand out and show your individuality. Submitting the Application 1. Please submit one stapled copy of Part I of the application ( Part I is noted in the document footer) 2. Please submit seven stapled copies of Part II ( Part II is noted in the document footer). 3. Please do not place the copies in binders, folders, etc. 4. Completed applications should be postmarked on or before Monday, April 13, Applications may also be delivered by 4PM on Monday, April 13. Late applications will not be accepted. 6 Application Part I Sponsor Commitment Form This form is to be completed by the applicant s sponsor to indicate the commitment to sponsor the applicant and pay the $1200 program fee, upon the applicant s acceptance to the program. Note: If you are paying for the program fee yourself, please complete this form. 7 Application Part I Employer Commitment Form This form is to be completed by the applicant s employer to indicate support of the applicant s participation in the SKL program and the mandatory attendance requirements. Note: If you are self-employed, you don t need to fill out this form. Class members are required to attend the Orientation, Opening Retreat, Closing Retreat and at least 80% of the monthly class sessions. An additional 5-15 hours per month outside of class sessions is required of class members.
