Caring for your print cartridge Preserving print cartridges To ensure the longest life from your print cartridge and optimum performance from your printer: Keep a print cartridge in its packaging until you are ready to install it. Do not remove a print cartridge from the printer except to replace, clean, or store it in a print cartridge storage unit. The print cartridge will not print correctly if removed from the printer and left exposed for an extended period of time. Do not refill print cartridges. Refilling empty print cartridges may invalidate your warranty. Incompatible inks can cause damage to the printhead or to the printer. For best results, use Lexmark supplies with the printer. Store the print cartridge in the same environment as the printer. 38 Caring for your print cartridge

Troubleshooting Troubleshooting Chapter Five Use this section to identify and solve problems. If you encounter: See page: Error messages 40 Miscellaneous problems 42 General printing problems 42 Paper feed problems 46 Poor print quality 48 Troubleshooting 39

Troubleshooting Error messages If you get this message: Ink low Out of memory Try this solution: Your print cartridge is running out of ink. You need to purchase a new print cartridge. Before sending a file to print, close all other open files in the application you are using. The printer prints a blank page when too many files are open in the same application. Free memory by closing other open applications. Decrease the print quality of your print job. Consider purchasing more memory for your personal computer. In Windows 3.1 or 3.11, consider increasing the virtual memory to a larger value. Out of paper Printer Error You may have the wrong paper source selected in the printer software or in your application. If an Out of Paper message appears and you are using a nonbidirectional printer cable, follow the steps below to continue printing: 1 Load paper. 2 Press the Paper Feed button. 3 Resend your print job. Your printer software will not function properly unless you use an IEEE 1284-compliant parallel cable with your printer. 1 Open the printer front cover. 2 Clear any paper or other objects from the paper path. 3 Make sure the print cartridge is completely snapped into the cartridge carrier, If not, push back on the cartridge until it snaps into place. 4 Press the Paper Feed button. If the error condition reappears, unplug the power cord from the electrical outlet, then plug it back in. If the error condition is still present, your printer may require service. 40 Troubleshooting

If you get this message: Paper jam Try this solution: 1 Pull firmly on the paper to remove it. If you cannot reach the paper because it is too far into the printer, open the printer front cover and pull the paper out from the front of the printer. 2 Close the printer front cover. 3 Press the Paper Feed button. 4 If necessary, resend your print job. Start with the page on which the paper jam occurred. If the error continues, unplug the printer and then plug it back in. If it continues, your printer may need service. Troubleshooting Printer is Offline Make sure: the power cord is completely plugged into the printer and an electrical outlet. the printer parallel cable is completely plugged into the printer and the computer. Pressing the Paper Feed button when the printer is out of paper also causes this message to appear. Unplug the printer from the electrical outlet and then plug it back in. Troubleshooting 41

Troubleshooting Miscellaneous problems For this problem: Printer has missing or damaged parts Printer software settings are not in effect Try this solution: Contact Lexmark. Check the settings in the software application you are using. Printer settings in your application may override settings in the printer software. Make all printer setting changes in your application if possible. Use the printer driver to change a setting only if your application does not have that setting. General printing problems For this problem: DOS print file takes too long to print Try this solution: If you are attempting to print a DOS file by sending it to the port to which the printer is connected, use the DOS Copy command. Avoid using the DOS Print command. The DOS Print command causes printing delays. Here is an example of the correct DOS Copy command. copy filename lptn /b In the command example: copy is the DOS copy command. filename is the name of the print file. lptn is the port where your printer is connected. For example, lpt1 or lpt2. /b instructs the computer to send the data in binary form. 42 Troubleshooting

For this problem: DOS print job does not print Try this solution: Check the following items: Make sure Disable CJ1000 DOS is not checked: 1 From your printer s Control Program, click the Options tab. 2 Make sure Disable CJ1000 DOS Printing (Enable DOS Printing to other Printers) is not checked. If you are using Windows 95, 98 make sure Spool MS-DOS print jobs is selected: 1 Open the Printer Driver Properties folder: a In the Windows Printers Folder, right-click the icon for your Lexmark printer. b In the sidebar menu, click Properties. c Choose the Details tab. 2 Click the Port Settings button. 3 Make sure Spool MS-DOS print jobs is checked. 4 Click OK. If you send a second DOS print job before the first DOS print job has finished processing, neither job will print. Normally, a job is finished processing when the first page of the job prints. Also, make sure the Lexmark 1000 Series ColorFine is set as your default printer driver. Troubleshooting Old document prints with different fonts Printer pauses frequently during a print job When you print a document formatted for a different printer, Windows may substitute different fonts. Line breaks and page breaks may change also. Use the software application that created the document to fix these problems, then save your changes for the next time you print. If your printer pauses frequently (every two or three lines) during a print job, and the printed pages have alternating bands of light and dark print, select Enable Buffer Mode from the Options tab. 1 From the printer's Control Program, click the Options tab. 2 Make sure the Enable Buffer Mode option is checked. Troubleshooting 43

Troubleshooting For this problem: Printer power is on but nothing prints (There is no action from the printer) Try this solution: Make sure: You have paper in the feeder. The Paper Load Lever is closed (away from you). The printer parallel cable is completely plugged into the printer and the computer. The print queue is not being held or paused. To check the printer status, follow the steps for your operating system: Windows 95, 98: 1 From the Printers folder, double-click the icon for the Lexmark 1000 Series ColorFine. 2 Click the Printer menu and make sure no checkmark appears next to the Pause Printing option. Windows 3.1, 3.11: 1 Open the Spool Manager. 2 Click the Queue menu and make sure no check mark appears next to the Hold option. Print a test page. To print a test page: 1 Open the printer Control Program. 2 On the Status tab, click the Print Test Page button. If the test page prints, the printer is functioning properly. Check your application. If you are trying to print from a DOS-based application, the problem could be with your DOS settings. Check your DOS printer port settings, driver, and your application settings. Printer prints very slowly Printer seems to be printing but no characters appear Try the following if your printer is printing slowly: Decrease the print quality. Consider purchasing more memory for your personal computer. Check the document you are printing. If you are using several graphics, it may take longer to print than regular text. Make sure: The print cartridge is properly installed in the printer. See Installing or replacing a print cartridge on page 24. The tape was removed from the print cartridge before it was installed. 44 Troubleshooting

For this problem: Try this solution: Test page does not print Make sure: The power cord is completely plugged in. Try unplugging it, then plugging it back in. The paper path is clear. The parallel cable is properly connected to the computer and printer. For help, refer to the Getting Started booklet. Paper is loaded in the printer correctly. For help, see Loading paper and other specialty media on page 10. Print cartridge is installed correctly. For help, see Installing or replacing a print cartridge on page 24. If these suggestions do not solve the problem, your printer may need service. Refer to your printer registration card or warranty/ service information for the appropriate telephone number for your country. Troubleshooting Troubleshooting 45

Troubleshooting Paper feed problems For this problem: Paper fails to feed Try this solution: If paper doesn't move through the sheet feeder: Make sure the paper is loaded properly into the printer. Remove any obstructions inside the printer. Make sure the Paper Load Lever is closed (away from you). Make sure the Left Paper Guide does not prevent paper feeding (by being pushed too far to the right). Paper jam Paper skews or buckles 1 Pull firmly on the paper to remove it. If it continues, your printer needs service. If paper skews or buckles while moving through the printer, make sure: You do not force the paper down into the printer when you load it. Note: If you are loading letter or A4 size paper, use the horizontal lines labeled LTR and A4 on the paper support to determine how far down to load the paper. There is not too much paper in the sheet feeder. Depending on the thickness of your paper, the sheet feeder can hold up to 30 sheets of paper. The paper guide does not cause the paper to bow in the sheet feeder. You are using the correct type of paper. The paper guide is against the side of the paper. The specialty media guide is not in the upright position. The printer is on a flat, level surface. 46 Troubleshooting

For this problem: Paper sticks together Try this solution: If paper sticks together when moving through the sheet feeder, try the following: Make sure there is not too much paper in the sheet feeder. Depending on the thickness of your paper, the sheet feeder can hold up to 30 sheets of paper. Make sure you are using the correct type of paper. Remove paper from the sheet feeder and flex or fan the paper. When loading paper, do not force the paper down into the printer. Note: Humid conditions may cause some papers to stick together. Troubleshooting Transparencies, glossy film, or photo papers stick together If transparencies, glossy film, or photo papers stick together after they exit the printer: Use a transparency, glossy film, or photo paper designed for an inkjet printer. For ordering information, see Ordering Supplies on page 57. Remove each transparency, glossy film, or photo paper as it exits from the printer. Load each piece of specialty media one piece at a time. For help, see Loading specialty media on page 12. Troubleshooting 47

Troubleshooting Poor print quality For this problem: Characters not aligned correctly at left margin Try this solution: Make sure you do not have hard-coded (extra) spaces at the left margin. Clean the print cartridge nozzles. See Cleaning the print nozzles on page 32. Align the print cartridge. See Aligning the print cartridge on page 32. Make sure you are using Normal 300dpi or High 600dpi print quality, not Fast Draft 300dpi. Characters with white lines General print quality problems Improperly formed or misaligned characters A print cartridge may be out of ink or low on ink. If the Ink Low message appears, install a new print cartridge. To view the ink level, check the print cartridge image shown in the Cartridge tab. Remove and reinstall the print cartridge. See Installing or replacing a print cartridge on page 24. Clean the print cartridge nozzles. See Cleaning the print nozzles on page 32. If you are printing transparencies, try changing the fill pattern in your application software. The print cartridge may be out of ink or low on ink. If the Ink Low message has appeared, install a new print cartridge. See Installing or replacing a print cartridge on page 24. To view the ink level, check the ink level graphic shown on the Cartridges tab or the Status tab of the Control Program. Change the Print Quality setting to something other than Fast Draft 300dpi. Clean the print cartridge nozzles. See Cleaning the print nozzles on page 32. Make sure the print cartridge is installed correctly. See Installing or replacing a print cartridge on page 24. Make sure you are using the correct type of paper. Specialty inkjet papers provide better printing results. See Ordering Supplies on page 57 for more information. Make sure you have the correct type of paper selected in the printer software. Clean the print cartridge nozzles. See Cleaning the print nozzles on page Troubleshooting

For this problem: Poor print quality at left, right, or bottom edge of page Try this solution: Like other printers, your printer cannot print in the extreme left, right, or bottom edges of a page. To avoid poor print quality at the edges of the page, we recommend using these minimum margin settings: Left and Right Margins Left and right margin settings must be at least 6.35 mm (0.25 in.) each for all paper sizes except A4. For A4 size paper, left and right margin settings must be at least 3.37 mm (0.133 in.) each. Troubleshooting Poor print quality at left, right, or bottom edge of envelope Print is too dark or smudged Top and Bottom Margins The top margin must be set to at least 3.39 mm (0.14 in.). The bottom margin setting for all paper sizes must be 12.7 mm (0.5 in.). For best printing results, use at least 16mm (0.63 in.). Like other printers, your printer cannot print in the extreme left, right, or bottom edges of an envelope. To avoid poor print quality at the edges of the envelope, we recommend using these minimum margin settings: Left and Right Margins Left and right margin settings must be at least 6.35 mm (0.25 in.) each for all envelope sizes. Top and Bottom Margins The top margin must be set to at least 3.39 mm (0.14 in.) The bottom margin setting for all envelope sizes must be 12.7 mm (0.5 in.). Try the following suggestions to correct this problem: Make sure the Paper Type setting in the printer software matches the Paper type loaded in the printer. Make sure the paper is straight and unwrinkled. Let the ink dry before you handle the paper. Change Print Quality to Fast Draft 300dpi. Clean the print cartridge nozzles. See Cleaning the print nozzles on page 32. Troubleshooting 49

Troubleshooting For this problem: Print smears on the page Try this solution: Print smearing may occur in two ways: Print is smeared as the printer prints the page. A page prints without smearing, but is smeared by damp ink on the next page exiting the printer. Try the following suggestions to prevent print smearing: If print is smeared as the printer prints the page, change to a higher or lower Print Quality setting. If the page is smeared by the next page exiting the printer, the ink may still be damp when a page finishes printing. Remove the pages as they exit the printer and allow them to dry before stacking. Printed pages have alternating bands of light and dark print Solid black areas on transparencies contain white streaks Unexpected or missing characters Vertical straight lines are not smooth See Printer pauses frequently during a print job on page 43. Try using a different fill pattern in your application software. Make sure you have the Lexmark 1000 Series ColorFine printer driver selected as the default printer. Try the following suggestions to improve print quality of vertical straight lines in tables, borders, and graphs: Clean the print cartridge nozzles. See Cleaning the print nozzles on page 32. Perfom a printhead alignment test. See Aligning the print cartridge on page 32. Change Print Quality to something other than Fast Draft 300dpi. 50 Troubleshooting

Printing from DOS Appendix B Printing from DOS You must install the following before you can print from DOS applications: Lexmark 1000 Series printer software PCL 3 printer driver for each DOS application Appropriate drivers in order of preference are: HP DeskJet 500C HP DeskJet 500 You must use the HP DeskJet 500C for color output. If your application does not include drivers for the HP DeskJet 500C or the HP DeskJet 500, contact the software manufacturer for a compatible driver replacement. Printing from a DOS application in Windows Use these instructions only if your application runs from the DOS prompt in Windows. When you print from a DOS application, your printer uses PCL 3 emulation. You must install a printer driver for PCL 3 emulation in each DOS application. In Windows 3.1, 3.11, avoid switching from your DOS application to another application while your job is printing. See the README file for your Lexmark printer for more information. 1 Make sure you are in Windows, not native DOS. 2 From the Control Program, click the Options tab. For help opening the Control Program, see Opening the Control Program on page 7. 3 Make sure Disable CJ1000 DOS Printing (Enable DOS Printing to other Printers) is not checked. Note: To print to non-lexmark printers, you must reselect this option. 4 Start your application from DOS. For help, see your Windows documentation. 5 Install the HP DeskJet 500C as the current printer in the DOS application from which you are printing. Some applications offer a color or black (mono) version of the HP DeskJet 500C driver. Choose the black (mono) version if you are printing in black only. Choose the color version if you are printing in color and black. Printing from DOS 53

Printing from DOS If your application does not offer the HP DeskJet 500C printer driver, install the HP DeskJet 500 printer driver. You will not be able to print in color with the HP DeskJet 500 printer driver. For help installing a printer, see your application user's documentation. 6 You can use the printer driver for your Lexmark 1100 Color Jetprinter to change printer settings that are not in your application. For help, see Changing print settings for DOS applications on page Print as you normally would from your application. Changing print settings for DOS applications If possible, use options in your DOS application to change printer settings. Use the following steps only if you want to change a printer setting that does not exist in your DOS application. Settings in your DOS application override settings in the driver. 1 From the Control Program, click the Dos Printing tab. For help opening the Control Program, see Opening the Control Program on page 7. 2 Change settings as needed. Printing to a file To print a document that has been processed by the driver and stored in a file (that is, printed to file): 1 Make sure you are in Windows, not native DOS. 2 Start your application from DOS. 3 For help, see your Windows documentation. 4 Create a print file using the "Print to File" function of your application. For help on printing to a file, see your application user's documentation. 5 Use this DOS command to copy the print file to the port where the printer is connected: copy filename lptn /b In the command example: copy is the DOS copy command. filename is the name of the print file you created. lptn is the port where your printer is connected. For example, lpt1 or lpt2. /b instructs the computer to send the data in binary form. Note: Avoid using the DOS Print command to send a job to the printer port. The Print command causes printing delays. Note: When you make changes on the DOS Printing tab, they apply to DOS print jobs only. When you make changes on other tabs, they apply to all print jobs. 54 Printing from DOS
