HABIT 1: BE PROACTIVE CIRCLE OF INFLUENCE Consider where you spend your time and energy in a typical day as a project or department leader. Write each activity in the appropriate circle. 2
HABIT 2: BEGIN WITH THE END IN MIND VISION: What is your vision for your PMO or department in 2017? GOALS: What specific goals support your vision? What does success look like for each? 3
HABIT 3: PUT FIRST THINGS FIRST WHAT COULD MAKE A DIFFERENCE? What one thing could you do on a regular basis, that you are not doing now, that would make a significant, positive difference in your work and personal life? WORK: PERSONAL: YOUR IMPORTANT THINGS List three to five important things you want to put first to support your PMO or department, then prioritize them. You have to decide what your highest priorities are and have the courage pleasantly, smilingly, non-apologetically, to say no to other things. And the way you do that is by having a bigger yes burning inside. - Stephen R. Covey 4
THE TIME MATRIX 1. How will you reduce or avoid fire-fighting in Q1? 2. How will you increase the amount of time you spend on effective activities in Q2? 3. How will you reduce the distractions of Q3? 4. How can you eliminate the waste of Q4? 5
HABIT 4: THINK WIN-WIN WIN-WIN AGREEMENT SITUATION: PARTY 1 S WINS: PARTY 2 S WINS: OUR AGREEMENT: 6
HABIT 5: SEEK FIRST TO UNDERSTAND, DIGITAL STRATEGIES THEN TO BE UNDERSTOOD The following are best practices for communicating empathically in the digital world for your reference. What other strategies have you used to successfully listen over digital media? PHONE: Allow the other person to finish his or her thoughts completely before responding. If emotion is high, reflect feelings and words when listening. Use I messages when speaking. Ask clarifying questions: Do I understand you completely? Follow up a phone conversation with an summary asking for confirmation and clarification. For video calls, dress appropriately. Sit up and smile. Other suggestions? OR TEXT: Read and write s and texts carefully and completely. If emotion is high, reflect feelings and words when responding. Use I messages when writing. Pause or step away from your computer or phone before crafting and sending your response. Schedule a phone or face-to-face conversation. Other suggestions? Listen, or your tongue will make you deaf. - Native American Proverb 7
HABIT 6: SYNERGIZE VALUE DIFFERENCES, BUILD ON STRENGTHS One team identified the strengths of its members in the table below Victoria Karl Luciano Hamid Rachel Strategic Creative Good Listener Natural Leader Communicator Problem Solver Planner Logical/Linear Sensible Prioritizer Intelligent Hard-Working Easygoing Good Organizer Determined Courageous Fun Collaborator Positive Attitude Insightful In the space below, write the strengths of your team, starting with yourself. You THE 3 RD ALTERNATIVE An idea or solution that goes beyond your way and my way to a better, higher way that neither of us could have come up with by ourselves. TIPS TO SEEK 3 RD ALTERNATIVES Focus on wins Withhold criticism Focus on quality Build on others ideas Encourage wild ideas Don t get trapped in details Write everything down Stick with it 8
HABIT 7: SHARPEN THE SAW START, STOP, AND CONTINUE Think about one thing you would like to start, stop, or continue in each dimension of renewal.
