1 EXECUTIVE DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM Executives need more tools too! They need different tools than other levels of management and leadership. The following tools are designed specifically for an executive leadership team. The purpose of the Executive Leadership Development Program is to develop the future leaders of the organization, those identified by executive leadership. This will be accomplished by showing them leadership from an executive-level position. They will learn to focus on the big picture and other elements needed to successfully run an organization. These classes are facilitated at an executive level. There is no lecturing. The participants will be given books and articles to read in preparation of each class. During classroom time, they will discuss what they have learned and apply the ideas. They will be given a situation they must solve using these new tips, tools, and techniques. The classroom discussion will be led by the facilitator using the Socratic method, teaching the participants how to think for themselves. They will learn to solve the issues they ll face as executives. I Determining Your Core Learn about your leadership style and how it impacts you as an executive. Study the competencies an executive leader must have in order to be successful. Determine what your style needs to be in order for you to maximize your prosperity. You will also learn the right way to develop your people s core. Discover a few things you ve been taught that are making your job more difficult and learn how to fix them. 2 Recognize their leadership style s strengths and how to utilize them Identify their leadership style s weaknesses and how to utilize and overcome them Identify the basic fundamentals of leadership Understand how a leader impacts the entire organization, subordinates, superiors, and peers Have knowledge of the SWOT and how it can be used to help in personal and organizational development Communicate to others your personal SWOT and how it impacts you as a leader II Becoming Results Focused Leaders are results driven. They must figure out what the desired end result is then give their team members the proper tools to achieve it. In this module, you will learn how to focus on results and how to help your people be more results driven. You will learn how to become a results driven delegator. You will learn the fine art of the Position Results Description (PRD). Discover what the Key Result Areas (KRA) are. Create the PRD and KRA for an executive-level position. After learning these tools, participants will be given a PRD they have to develop by identifying the KRAs along with the knowledge and skills necessary for each KRA. Learn how a well-executed PRD can help you get more done and have more fun. Becoming an Effective Leader (Results Driven Manager) by Harvard Business School Press Differentiate between results-driven and task-oriented management Delegate to create win/win situations that get more done Set their people up for success Write a complete Position Results Description Learn how to effectively incorporate the PRD into your organization s culture III Developing and Communicating Your Vision Begin with the end in mind. In order to reach a target, we must actually have identified that target. This module will teach you the difference between a Vision and Mission statement. 3 keep your team focused on the vision, or it is just a wasted exercise. Learn how to overcome vision drift and keep your team on track. You will also develop a vision statement for your team so you have the experience in putting one together to take back with you. 4 V Making Effective Decisions Leaders make decisions. In this module, you will learn how to be more creative in your thought process and how to use that creativity to be more effective in problem solving and decision making. Make decisions more effectively. Solve problems the first time, so you don t have to revisit them time after time. Participants will be asked to bring an issue that they are currently dealing with. The group will use the processes they learn to come up with a solution they can use. Learn to get all the facts, get all of the views before coming to a decision. Learn to make a decision that will take you towards your vision and strategic plan. Making decisions that affect your team is one thing. But having to make a decision that affects not only your group but several others or the entire company? That s a different skill set. In this module, you will discuss who you need to be gathering information from, how to weigh the data before making the decision, and what to do to ensure the decision is being executed upon. Execution: The Discipline of Getting Things Done by Larry Bossidy & Ram Charan. Apply essential concepts and tools pertinent to achieve identified objectives and goals, whether they involve processes, projects or people Lead and make rapid, high-level business decisions, develop their global perspective, and expand their Network through working with innovative faculty and high caliber colleagues Analyze an organization s various types of information and make intelligent and effective decisions Identify, gather, analyze and incorporate knowledge from across the organization and use this information to provide innovative and credible solutions that provide an immediate return on investment Advance the strategic objectives of the organization through intelligent decision making practices VI Building Your Strategic Process Learn how to create a strategy to achieve the Vision and Mission. Learn the different types of models of strategic thinking and how to create a strategic plan. These two elements put together are called Strategic Management. 7 IX Developing Your Executive Network How do I develop new customers? Where do I find them? What do I say? How do I keep them happy? How do I develop more business from what I currently have? Learn how to set up a network, determine what relationships you currently have, which ones you need to terminate and identify new relationships you need to have in order to reach your goals. Learn how to determine these relationships and then how to develop them. Successful executives have that special something that makes others want to follow and do business with them. In this role you will also be required to go in and clean up poor relationships critical or strategic to the success of the organization. In this module, you will learn the skills necessary to be the ultimate closer and mender as well as how to develop more business from the ones you currently have. Each session will have a corresponding text book. The participants will review the book and then the discussion will be based on information from the book plus corresponding tools and techniques. Business Relationships That Last by Ed Wallace Be more influential with all levels of an organization Determine what internal networks need to be developed Determine what external networks need to be developed Identify and locate people and organizations critical to your organization s success Build relationships with other people and organizations Understand and utilize the five steps of persuasion Repair or mend broken relationships that are deemed critical to your success X Managing Individual and Group Conflict Conflict arises from differences. We have them every day in the workplace, and in life. Executives must deal with conflict in a quick and decisive manner. They must have confidence in their abilities to handle any situation. Conflict can be a very powerful tool that works for you, or it can be a debilitating barrier that keeps you from achieving your goals. Extra Curricular Activities Augmenting Your Apprentice Each participant will pick someone who reports to them, that they feel has leadership potential and is an asset to the organization. As the participant goes through the Executive Leadership Development Program, they will teach what they learn to their Apprentice. The best way to learn something is to teach someone else. Also, this increases your return on investment for the time and money invested in this program. Group Project Each group will select a project to be completed by the end of the program. This project must be something that improves the prosperity or productivity of the organization. The group will select the project from suggested projects, or one they come up with on their own.
