3 Academic Mathematics The transition from elementary to junior high begins with a bang! Order of Operations Algebraic Reasoning

4 6 th grade Math Curriculum: 0Is on the college ready track 0Is rigorous 0Is taught in a 45 minute classroom setting, which is challenging for students as they transition from the elementary setting of 1 hour 1 hour and 30 minutes.

5 A successful Math Student: 0Is prepared for class with: 0an open mindset 0a positive attitude 0necessary supplies 0Is willing to raise their hand for help when needed AND asks good questions to further their understanding

7 How do I prepare my student for 6 th grade math? 0Review facts with flashcards or websites like: 0Engage in mathematical activities such as discussing how many ounces are in a cup, ½ cup, and ¼ cup while baking or cooking.

8 PreAP Mathematics 6 th grade PreAP Mathematics is a jampacked curriculum in that it consists of the 6 th grade TEKs and 1/3 of the 7 th grade TEKS. WHY? 6 th PreAP 7 th PreAP 8 th HS Algebra 9 th Geometry 10 th Algebra II 11 th PreCal 12 th - Calculus

9 How do I decide if my student is ready for PreAP? 0A common misconception is that if your student has all A s and scores advanced on STAAR), they are ready for PreAP. 0Although that is a good indicator, it is not the only indicator. We will talk about some indicators in the next slides. Cont.

10 How do I decide if my student is ready for PreAP? 0 As the first two six weeks consist of many crucial 7 th grade TEKS, some students tend to struggle at the beginning of the school year. It is common for a typical straight A student to score a C or lower on an assignment, quiz, test, or report card. The question is, How do we help them persevere? Cont.

11 How do I decide if my student is ready for PreAP? 0Is your child motivated to keeping up with a fast paced curriculum? 0Has your child mastered his/her basic math facts? Is computation something that is done quickly? This is crucial for more than just quick calculations. Having this prior knowledge allows teachers to make connections and begin reasoning skills when presenting new concepts.

13 How do you know if your student is ready for a fast paced classroom? 0Talk with your student about what happens in their classroom on a daily basis. 0After one day of a lesson, does your student need more time to learn the material? 0How does your student feel about the pace of the 5 th math class now?

14 COMPUTATION 0Fluency with computation is crucial. 0Adding & Subtracting Whole Numbers (1-20) 0Subtracting with regrouping (large numbers) 0Multiplying & Dividing Whole Numbers (through 12 s) 0If your student is not fluent with computation, they may struggle with completing classwork, quizzes, tests, and homework. How do you know if your student is fluent?

16 Continued 0Use websites like to see how long it takes your student to complete a facts quiz. 0Use flash cards to review facts and watch the clock to see how long it takes to complete a certain number of problems. (or set the timer on your oven or phone)

18 Decision? As you make the decision of signing your student up for Academic or PreAP math, please take these things into consideration: Academic math is on the college prep track. Academic math students are challenged with the curriculum. It is crucial that you talk to your student and investigate their readiness. PreAP Math is a fast paced curriculum consisting of 7 th grade TEKS In PreAP math, it is possible that an A student earns lower grades.
