Each davit arm and base installation must be independently capable of sustaining this load. WARNING: Davit arms and mounting bases that are installed for personnel riding, material handling, or rescue applications only, must be labeled as such to prevent the system from being used for fall arrest or work positioning applications, which require greater structural strength. 3.0 OPERATION AND USE WARNING: Do not alter or intentionally misuse this equipment. Some subsystem and component combinations may interfere with the operation of the equipment. WARNING: Consult with your doctor if there is reason to doubt your fitness to withstand fall arrest forces. Pregnant women or minors must not use this equipment unless for unavoidable emergency use situations. 3.1 BEFORE EACH USE of this equipment, carefully inspect it according to section 5.0 of this manual. 3.2 PLAN your system before using this equipment. Consider all factors that will affect your safety during use of this equipment. Consider the following points when planning your system: A. HAZARD EVALUATION: An evaluation of job site hazards is necessary before starting work. Consult applicable OSHA and industry standards for guidelines and regulatory requirements on issues such as; confined space entry, personal fall arrest 6

7 systems, and single point suspended scaffolds. B. WORK SITE GEOMETRY: When suspending working lines from the davit arm, check for obstructions or sharp edges in the work path. Avoid working where the user may swing and hit an object, or where lines may cross or tangle with that of another worker. C. BACKUP FALL ARREST SYSTEM: When using the davit arm and mounting base as a support for suspending a worker at a work level, or for personnel riding applications, a backup fall arrest system is required. See OSHA 29 CFR and The davit arm has an auxiliary connection point for a backup personal fall arrest system. D. RESCUE: In the event of an accident with injuries or other medical emergency, it is critical to have a rescue system in place. Response time often plays an important role in the survival of an injured worker. It should be assumed that the fallen user will not be able to participate in their rescue. Users of this equipment must be trained in emergency procedures. 3.3 LOAD REQUIREMENTS: See section 2.3 for application types and supporting structure load requirements. 3.4 GEOMETRIC REQUIREMENTS: Select a level area near the work opening that will allow the mast to be leveled in accordance with the leveling bubble installed on the base. The location must also provide firm footing that will not allow the base to sink or shift while in use. Position the modular base so the arm will be directly over the work area. The winch/srl cable must remain parallel to the mast while in use. See Figure 4. Do not position the davit arm where the worker will have to swing under the davit arm to reach the work area. The acceptable working area is directly under the davit arm, between the stabilizer tubes. See Figure 5. Avoid positioning the davit arm where the working line may abrade against sharp edges when in use. Figure 4 - Cable Parallel to Mast Cable and mast must remain parallel during use 7

8 WARNING: Never allow the working line to extend outside the legs of the portable base, tipping of the base could occur. IMPORTANT: All mounting bases must be positioned so the davit arm will be directly over the work area. The davit arm must be positioned to ensure a safe working area for the user. Figure 5 - Davit Arm Positions Acceptable working area Approx REQUIREMENTS FOR PERSONAL FALL ARREST SYSTEMS: Personal fall arrest systems used with the davit arm and base typically include, full body harness, connecting subsystem (self retracting lifeline or lifeline and rope grab), and necessary hardware to connect the system. Personal fall arrest systems used with this davit arm and mounting base must meet applicable OSHA requirements. Personal fall arrest systems that use a full body harness must limit the fall arrest forces to 1,800 lbs., and arrest the fall within 42 inches. Body belts, unless part of a full body harness, are not recommended for use with this equipment. 3.6 ASSEMBLY OF DAVIT BASE AND DAVIT ARM: A. BASE ASSEMBLY: See Figure 6. Step 1. Step 2. Remove all parts from the carrying bags (carrying bags are optional) and inspect for damaged, defective, or missing parts. If any components are found to be damaged, defective, or missing, contact DBI/SALA immediately for replacements Insert a width adjustment tube into each side of the base and secure each tube with the attached detent pin. The base width can be adjusted to widths of 48 in., 54 in., or 60 in. For a 48 in. width, push both width adjustment tubes completely into the base and secure them with attached detent pins. For a 54 in. width, unpin one of the width adjustment tubes and pull it out six inches to the second hole position and secure it with the attached detent pin. For a 60 in. width, pull both width adjustment tubes out to the second hole position and secure them with the attached detent pins. 8

Davit Arm Locking Detent Pin Locking detent pin Figure 8 - Mast Assembly 3.7 CONNECTING EQUIPMENT TO THE DAVIT ARM: The davit arm is equipped with three system connection points (see Figure 9). Two connection points are quickmount attachment points for the Salalift winch or self retracting lifeline. The third connection point is an auxiliary connection for other DBI/SALA systems. Detent Pin Quick Mount Attachment Point Arm Rotation Locking Lever A. WINCH MOUNTING: Mount the winch on the top quickmount Mast attachment point as shown in Figure 10. Slide the slots in the base of the winch onto the bar in the quick-mount attachment point. Use the attached locking detent pin to secure the front of the winch base into the attachment point. The winch cable must be routed over the sheave at the end of the arm. The davit arm may be lowered by pulling the locking detent pin at the base of the davit arm and allowing the arm to rotate forward. The weight of the winch on the back of the arm may cause the arm to rotate backwards. When the arm is lowered, 10

11 pull out the sheave pins at the end of the arm, route the cable over the guide roller and through one of the pulleys and then replace the sheave pins. Do not operate the winch without the sheave pins in place to capture the winch cable. B. SELF RETRACTING LIFELINE MOUNTING: Mount the self retracting lifeline on the top or bottom quick-mount attachment point as shown in Figure 11. Use the bottom quick-mount attachment point when the top attachment point is occupied by a winch or other equipment. Route the self retracting lifeline cable through the unused side of the double pulley at the end of the davit arm as shown in Figure 11. Route cable under the sheave pins as described in section A above. The SRL cable may also be routed through a separate (optional) snatch block that is attached to the auxiliary connection instead of using the davit arm sheave. Figure 9 - Connecting Points Figure 10 - Winch Quick-mount Sheave Pin Guide Roller Auxillary Connection Quick-mount Attachment Points The self retracting lifeline can be hung from the auxiliary connection point using a selflocking, carabiner as shown in Figure 12. When connecting other equipment to the auxiliary connection point, DBI/SALA recommends using a self locking hook or carabiner. 11

12 C. ROPE AND ROPE GRAB: A rope lifeline may be hung from the auxiliary connection point and used in conjunction with a rope grab as shown in Figure 13.
