Turnitin for Instructors Overview Turnitin, by iparadigms, is a company started in 1996 by researchers at Berkeley who created a computer program that would do a search, much like you might use Google, for close or exact matches to phases or paragraphs from a student's paper. As Turnitin grew in popularity, the company was able to expand its comparison capability. iparadigm claims that Turnitin, the computer driven software, can crawl and compare a submitted paper against 12 billion web pages both current and archived. It has access at this time to over 100 million student papers and more than 80,000 major newspapers and scholarly journals. iparadigms also claims to have access to thousands of books including most of the classics. 4 Originality Reports VIEWING THE ORIGINALITY REPORT FROM D2L Go to the Drop Box in D2L. See the Percent Chart and click the Colored Bar. The Originality Report 2
Three Buttons appear at the upper left corner. The first one is Originality, then GradeMark and PeerMark. Select Originality, and a formatted document and matching/source panel appears. The Main-left area is the document that is being evaluated. On the right side is the Match Overview. Look to the upper right side of the screen to see the Match Overview in Red. Using the icon that looks like a Columnar Graph, the viewer can toggle from Match Overview to All Sources. Using the little greater than/next item arrow to the right and left side under ALL Sources or just under the Match Overview, the viewer can go to each match in the document. When Using All Sources or under Match Overview, a noncountable match can be removed from the calculation by going to the bottom of the Sources panel and select Select Sources to be Excluded. Use the check boxes to select the sources to exclude. Check any or all and select Exclude. Turnitin will Recalculate. The most common view displays the highest matching source on top of other matches. It is in Red. Select it. Text in the document will appear highlighted with the same red color and the number that is associated with it. When the number is selected on the main document, it will show the source and a small amount of text before and after the selected text. It will also display its source reference. If the instructor wants to see full text, the popup Preview can be expanded and it will appear in the same Match Overview Window. When finished, close to return to the Match Overview. The Color Report Icon uses color to label the matching text and the percentage related to that match. The color code is as follows: Blue no match Green one word > 24% Yellow 25% > 49% Orange 50% > 74% Red 75% > 100% Just above the Match Overview, see the Similarity Index. The percentage is the amount of text that matched the sources found by Turnitin. Look to the bottom of the screen beginning from left to right, the circled i will display the date submitted, word count, character count and where the comparison found some matches. Next is the printer icon and download icon. I would suggest that any paper that causes concern be downloaded and archived. Over to the right is the standard 'you are viewing 1 of X Pages' and the Zoom. Under the indicator Sources panel is the View Sources option (just like above), the filter option (to remove quotes, bibliography and specific matches), next is the View all that have been excluded, and a Text- Only Report. The Originality Report is available in two views; the Text-Only and the Document View. The Text-Only leaves the colored highlighted data but removes all formatting from the paper. If Text-Only is selected and the viewer desires to return to formatted view locate the Document Viewer found in the upper left area of the screen to toggle back to formatted view. A match may have one or more matches, displaying many sources of the same phrase or word(s). Underlying matches are not seen unless each source is expanded. At the bottom of Match Overview an icon will expand to view all sources. A funnel-like icon filters for Quotes, Phrases and Standard 'data'. The Funnel enables the removal of selected phrases or to discount small word groupings. The filter will also provide an option to remove Quotes and Bibliographies. An icon to the right of the funnel re-opens all excluded sources. Boxes may be unchecked to reassign any excluded source or a Restore ALL can be checked. Next is the Text-Only Report which removes the formatting and style so the document is viewed in Text Style. To return to Support Contact: Barbara Chamberlain (knightb@etsu.edu; ) 3
Document View select the words Document Viewer in the upper left corner. Originality Reports may be downloaded and archived. An Originality Report with matches is NOT proof of plagiarism. The Originality Report is a comparison of text in a paper to a very large repository of periodicals, journals, publications, internet resources, other individual s papers, and some books. If a match is found it is highlighted along with the location and description of the matching data. The percentage of match is not a clear indicator of copying. An instructor must evaluate the student s matches with the sources to determine if there is misdoing. More information for instructors related to evaluating student s work can be found at Or Points to Remember: 1. Students, if permitted by instructor, and the class instructor are the ONLY ones who can view the originality report. 2. Students can identify that the instructor is not permitting them to see the Originality report. Instead of seeing Show Details and the Color Coded Rectangle, the students see a RED CIRCLE with a line through it. 3. A color coded rectangle icon that is gray in color means that it had not been processed. Setting up the Dropbox Checking student papers for originality occurs within the D2L Dropbox. You will have to set up and configure a Dropbox folder to either manually or automatically submit student assignments for originality checking through Turnitin. To find out more about the Dropbox check out our D2L help page found at 1. To enable Turnitin orginality checking in your dropbox folder, check the Enable for this folder box. Notice that you can click on the How does Plagiarism Detection work? link for more information about Turnitin. 2. After selecting to enable you will have more options appear at the bottom of the Dropbox folder window. 4
Caution: You cannot disable Plagiarism Detection once it has been enabled and saved in the Dropbox. 3. To see all of the options available for creating your Turnitin enabled folder, click the Show Advanced Options link. Advanced Turnitin Dropbox Options 1. Allow submitters to see originality reports. Check this box if you would like for your students to be able to view the reports generated by Turnitin. Upon submitting his report, Charlie Brown receives a message notifying him where he can find the report. If you choose this option, please make sure that your students know that it can take several minutes for the report to appear. Student's view of the report: 2. Frequency options allow you to select to automatically submit all papers to Turnitin, or choose particular papers to submit. If you choose the option to manually submit papers you will just need to click the box icon to submit the paper. Support Contact: Barbara Chamberlain (knightb@etsu.edu; ) 5
3. The Check submissions against option allows you to define what will be used in the originality checking. You can choose all or only one, whatever meets your needs. Use paper database - checks the student paper against papers that have been previously submitted to Turnitin. Current and archived internet - checks the student paper against current and archived Internet sites. Periodicals, journals & publications - checks the student paper against third party periodicals, journals and publications. 4. Checking the Index files for Plagiarism detection option allows you to choose whether submissions to that folder will be added to the Turnitin database and other submissions checked against them. Academic Council has approved recommendations for using Turnitin software at ETSU. Instructors should read these recommendations before enabling Turnitin in their D2L course sites. Using Turnitin Outside of D2L Faculty at ETSU can use Turnitin outside of D2L. A Class Site can be created and used over a period of time beyond a standard ETSU Semester. Students can be added and deleted as needed by the Instructor. Students can submit papers or papers can be submitted by the Instructor. Class assignments (Folders) can be created inside a Class Site as needed. Students can access the Class Site by using a Class ID and password. An account will be set up for the Instructor with a generic password. A Class (with a name you select) will be created. The Instructor can enter and change the password. The Instructor will create Assignment Folders as needed. The Instructor can also increase the Class Site s expiration date as many times as needed. The Students will create a Turnitin account and use the ID number and password provided by the instructor. Once the Instructor s Account is created, he or she will receive an similar to this: Dr. XXXX Course has been created. Your password is: XXXXXXX Your log in is: XXXXXXX The Security question I used was what is your mothers maiden name and I typed the answer to be unknown You may change your password and the security question by going to User Info found at the top of the page. 6
If you would like students to enroll themselves in this class, they will need both the enrollment password and the unique class ID generated by Turnitin: Class ID is Password is XXXXXX Students will go to Create an account Use the above ID and password and this class will appear. Each time they will Sign In using their etsu goldmail, this class and the assignment folder will be available for them. You and students can see Originality Reports and Students can turn in papers over and over again. Each time they turn in a document it replaces what was originally there, if they are turning in the same document with same name. They can turn in a new document in the same folder with a different name. Support Contact: Barbara Chamberlain (knightb@etsu.edu; ) 7
Login to Instructor Account Go to Enter your username and password. If you had an account but forgotten the password, enter the address and click 'Retrieve Password' (unless you remember your password). Turnitin will take you through the steps to recreate a password. If you were able to retrieve or reset your password, you will be prompted to Log in to Turnitin. If you created a new Profile, you will enter personal information and click next until you see something similar to this image below. When Turnitin asks you to create a security question and answer, I suggest this be done with care. You will be glad you did when you have to use these secret questions several times to retrieve your password. It is difficult to remember this password because you will most likely have lengthy time periods between Turnitin sessions. IF, you do not have an account contact Barbara Chamberlain at or Myra Jones at An account will be created for you and the information sent via . Create a New Class As the instructor you can add classes. You are not required to add a class at this time. You may return to Turnitin and add a class later. You can return and make changes to the Class Options and Assignments at any time. The Class will have an Active Date range. You can increase or decrease that range as needed. You can also reactivate a class after it has expired. 8
Give the class a name. It is my recommendation that it's name be the same as the official class name. For example, if your class is MATH , I would suggest you name it MATH Students become confused if the class you create is not named the same as what they see in D2L and on Goldlink. Give your class a simple password. It is best if the password is all lowercase. Passwords in Turnitin are Case Sensitive. When the class is created, you will see something like the image below. Write down this information. This information is what you will give students so they can enter the class and submit papers, IF that is why you have created this account. The Account may be used by only you to submit papers. The Class Name is more for confirmation and ensures everyone is in the right place. The ID number and password are what the students use to get into the class. The class will appear to you when you long in to Turnitin. When you send students this information, do so carefully. The class ID must be the exact same and remember that the password is case sensitive. The students will enter the class by filling in this form as they create their account or when they log in. On the left side students will see an option to enroll in a class. They will use the ID and password you give them to login to that course. Support Contact: Barbara Chamberlain (knightb@etsu.edu; ) 9
Add an Assignment Back in the Class Home Page, select the class to add an assignment. Select New Assignment and pick Paper Assignment. Give the assignment a name and date and it will appear to the students. Select when the assignment is due. Open the More Actions. This is the place where you can add instructions for the students, opt to generate originality reports, opt out of allowing the students to see the reports, exclude bibliographic, quoted material and include small match phrases that are common. You have several options as to how Turnitin will behave when a paper is submitted to a Paper or Revision assignment. The paper can be turned in once anytime before the due date and it is immediately compared. The paper can be turned in over and over and each paper is a replacement. The paper can be turned in on the due date only and is compared immediately. The other options ask about the comparison resources and whether the student s paper can be added to Turnitin's Resource Bank. The options you select become the default for that class. The options can be changed at any time. Now that you are finished with the assignment, return to the Class Home Page again and Select the Class. You will now see the assignment. You can select the assignment link and open it the same way that students open it. Should you opt to, you can submit student s papers for them. You can submit in 'bulk' should you wish to using a zipped folder. If you need help doing that, contact at: ATS@etsu.edu or , and someone will help you ZIP the folder containing student s papers. Turnitin will accept most formats. It will accept PDF, Word Perfect, Word, Open Formats, Google Docs and others. 10
Evaluate Originality Reports It usually takes about 15 minutes to receive the originality report. When you select the assignment View, under Reports, you will see something like this...only the percentage should be more like 10% instead of 100%. If you click on the colored bar you will see the color coded Similarity Index by Source. If the students index is too high, the student may need to make revisions. The instructor may create another assignment, but this time, the type will be a Revision. It is tied to a particular assignment that will appear in the drop-down. Turnitin will add a sub-assignment link called a Revision and students can turn in their paper to that link. You can print, save or modify the Similarity Index. If you see a match that you want to remove, you can remove the match by clicking on the red x to the right of the match. Refresh to make the adjustments.
