1 One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish by Dr. Seuss (An abridged version of the book. Scripted by Karen Antikajian) One fish, two fish, (hold up fish) red fish, blue fish. (hold up fish) Black fish, blue fish, (hold up fish) old fish, new fish. (hold up old and new fish) This one has a little star. (hold up a fish with a star) This one has a little car. (hold up a fish in a car) All Readers: Say what a lot of fish there are. Yes. Some are red. (those with red fish, hold them up) And some are blue. (those with blue fish, hold them up) Some are old. (those with old fish, hold them up) Reader 10: And some are new. (those with new fish, hold them up) Reader 11: Some are sad. And some are glad. (make sad and glad face) Reader 12: And some are very, very, bad. (shake finger) Reader 13: Why are they sad and glad and bad? All Readers: We do not know. Go ask your dad. Reader 14: Some are thin. (hold up a thin fish) And some are fat. The fat one has a yellow hat. (hold up fish with yellow hat) From there to here, from here to there, funny things are everywhere. 1

2 Here are some who like to run. They run for fun in the hot, hot sun. Oh me! Oh my! Oh me! Oh My! All Readers: What a lot of funny things go by. Some have two feet and some have four. Some have six feet and some have more. Where do they come from? I canʼt say. But I bet they have come a long, long way. Reader 10: We see them come. We see them go. Reader 11: Some are fast. And some are slow. Reader 12: Some are high. And some are low. Reader 13: Not one of them is like another. All Readers: Donʼt ask us why. Go ask your mother. Reader 14: Say! Look at his fingers! One, two, three... How many fingers do I see? One, two, three, four, five, six, seven... eight, nine, ten. He has eleven! All Readers: Eleven! This is something new. I wish I had eleven, too! Bump! Bump! Bump! Did you ever ride a Wump? We have a Wump with just one hump. 2

3 But we know a man called Mr. Gump. Mr. Gump has a seven hump Wump. So... If you like to go Bump! Bump! Bump! Just jump on the hump of the Wump of Gump. Reader 10: We like our bike. It is made for three. Reader 11: Our Mike sits up in back, you see. Reader 12: We like our Mike and this is why: All Readers: Mike does all the work when the hills get high. Reader 13: Oh, dear! Oh, dear! I cannot hear. Reader 14: Will you please come over here? Will you please look in his (her) ear? There must be something there, I fear. Say, look! A bird was in your ear. But he is out. So have no fear. All readers: Again your ear can hear, my dear. My hat is old. My teeth are gold. We took a look. We saw a Nook. On his head he had a hook. On his hook he had a book. On his book was How to Cook. 3

4 Reader 10: We saw him sit and try to cook. Reader 11: He took a look at the book on the hook. Reader 12: But a Nook canʼt read, so a Nook canʼt cook. All Readers: So... what good to a Nook is a hook cook book? Reader 13: The moon was out and we saw some sheep. Reader 14: We saw some sheep take a walk in their sleep. By the light of the moon, by the light of a star. they walked all night from near to far. We would never walk. All Readers: We would take a car. I do not like this one so well. All he does is yell, yell, yell. I will not have this one about. When he comes in I put him out. This one is quiet as a mouse. I like to have him in the house. Reader 10: At our house we open cans. Reader 11: We have to open many cans. Reader 12: And that is why we have a Zans. Reader 13: A Zans for cans is very good. 4

5 Reader 14: Have you a Zans for cans? All Readers: You should. It is fun to sing if you sing with a Ying. My Ying can sing like anything. I like to sing high and my Ying sings low, And they are not too bad, you know. This one, I think, is called a Yink. He likes to wink, he likes to drink, He likes to drink, and drink, and drink. The thing he likes to drink is ink. The ink he likes to drink is pink. Reader 10: He likes to wink and drink pink ink. Reader 11: SO... if you have a lot of ink, All readers: then you should get a Yink, we think. Reader 12: Hop! Hop! Hop! I am a Yop. Reader 13: All I like to do is hop from finger top to finger top. Reader 14: I hop from left to right and then... Hop! Hop! He (she) hops right back again. He (she) likes to hop all day and night. from right to left and left to right. 5

6 Why does he (she) like to hop, hop, hop? All Readers: We do not know. Go ask your Pop. Did you ever fly a kite in bed? Did you ever walk with ten cats on your head? Did you ever milk this kind of cow? Well we can do it. We know how. Reader 10: If you never did, you should All Readers: These things are fun and fun is good. Reader 11: And now good night. It is time to sleep. Reader 12: So we will sleep with our pet Zeep. Reader 13: Today is gone. Today was fun. Reader 14: Tomorrow is another one. All Readers: Every day, from here to there, funny things are everywhere! Grouping and performance notes: For groups of seven, combine parts. Reader 1 would also take the part of Reader 8, Reader 2 would take part 9, etc. Or Reader 1 and take parts 1 and 2. Reader 2, parts 3 and 4. Adjust others accordingly. When there is a choice between he and she, it depends on whether a boy or girl has read the previous part that says I. Since many of the sections are not related, this script can easily be shortened for younger students. The script can be used without props or more props can be added to parts without props suggested. If students draw their own props, encourage them to make them VERY LARGE so the audience can see them easily. Older students can prepare this and perform for younger students. 6
