Alzheimer s disease By Rochaiu Daye Mentoring in Medicine VSC 2013
What kind of Disease is this? This is a brain disease that occurs mostly in elderly People. It is irreversible, progressive and it slowly destroys memory and thinking skills.(9)
What are the symptoms? 1. Memory loss that disrupts daily life 2. Challenges in planning or solving problems 3. Difficulty completing familiar tasks anywhere 4. Confusion with time or place 5. Trouble understanding visual images and spatial relationships 6. New problems with words in speaking or writing 7. Misplacing things and losing the ability to retrace steps
What are the symptoms? Cont d 8. Decreased or poor judgment 9. Withdrawal from work or social activities 10.Changes in mood and personality(2) As the disease advances, memory loss declines even more, and changes in other cognitive [(relating to involving conscious intellectual activity (as thinking, reasoning, or remembering)](3) abilities are seen.
What is the cause? Plaques and Tangles are the culprits for this disease. They are abnormal proteins which damage and kill the nerve cells in the brain. Tangles build up inside the cell and Plaques build between individual nerve cells. Scientists concluded that these proteins inhibits communication between nerve cells and prevent the cells from getting nutrients etc.(4) It's the destruction and death of nerve cells that causes all symptoms aforementioned. (4) (7)
What is the frequency or rate? An estimated 5.2 million Americans of all ages have Alzheimer's disease in 2013.This includes an estimated 5 million people age 65 and older and approximately 200,000 individuals younger than age 65 who have younger-onset Alzheimer's. The number of Americans with Alzheimer's disease and other dementias will grow as the U.S. population age 65 and older continues to increase. By 2050, the number of people age 65 and older with Alzheimer's disease may nearly triple, from 5 million to a projected 13.8 million, barring the development of medical breakthroughs to prevent, slow or stop the disease. (5)
What are the risk factors? This disease usually begins after age 60. The risk goes up as you get older. Your risk is also higher if a family member has had the disease. (9)
How is the disease diagnosed? (6)
What is the treatment? Sadly, there is no cure for this disease. But there are some treatments and therapies that can improve some of the cognitive abilities and even slow down the onset of the disease. Medications such as cholinesterase inhibitors (Aricept, Exelon, Razadyne, Cognex) and memantine (Namenda) to treat the cognitive symptoms (memory loss, confusion, and problems with thinking and reasoning) of Alzheimer's disease. But they can t revive back the dead nerve cells.(8)
