Course Description: An introductory survey of the history, culture and legacy of Ancient Greece from the Bronze Age (ca BC) to the end of the Hellenistic Period (31 BC). The focus will be on those aspects of Greek history that have most profoundly influenced the development of Western Culture. Course Objectives: To gain an understanding of the origins of the Western episteme through the political, intellectual and cultural history of Classical Greece. Required Texts: There is no traditional text-book for this class. Students will be provided with two PDF documents of primary sources in translation. These texts will be the common reading material for the class. Other reading material will be assigned depending on the research specialty each student adopts. See below under Course Work. Course Work: The class will be divided into five or six teams. Each team will select one of the topics suggested by the instructor and write a book on that topic, each team member contributing one chapter. There will be four evaluative stages: 1. Research agenda: As a team you will submit a Research Proposal to the class on 14 February. This presentation will be worth 20% of your final grade. 2. On 19 March each team will submit a proposal for the book structure complete with chapter outlines. This proposal will be worth 40% of your final grade: 20% for the book proposal as a team grade and 20% for each chapter outline as a personal grade. 3. Instead of writing a final exam, each student will submit their chapters as final assignment term papers. These papers are due on Tuesday, 22 April at 4:30 pm. The chapter submission will be worth 30% of your grade. Part of your grade will based on your individual contribution to the team. Each team member will 'grade' each of their colleagues on a scale of 1 to 10 for the value of their contributions to the effort as a whole. This grade will count for 10% of your final grade.
