1 HOW TO MEASURE: Instructions for filling out the Measurement Page Step 1: Step 2: Step 3: Step 4: Choose Surface or Recessed mounting. Check the window frame for old hardware or any protrusions including corners, blinds, curtain rods and crank handles. Some may need to be moved. A continuous even surface is needed to make a good seal. Recessed panels will need to have window stops giving a continuous even surface up both sides and across the top of the window opening. See diagram A to identify window stops. See Photo Gallery picture series showing how to add stops if you need to add them or fix them. If you need to add stops for a Recessed mount then we recommend using wood stock of at least 1 x 3/4. Our panels will usually rest on the window sill, so no window stops are needed across that area unless it is not level. Fill in the information being requested about each panel on the left side of the measuring page. Measure every window even if they look the same especially if you are recess mounting. Circle the details that apply to each window. A Notes section is provided to tell us about any peculiarities about the existing window. Sketch the grid work of the existing Window in the box provided. Don't worry if the picture is not proportional. If you want to make your sketch proportional please do so on another sheet of paper. We may talk to you about adding additional grid work for support if we feel it is needed. Please Note: We only want the Final Dimensions to build your insulating panels so it is important to measure as directed. Always measure from the bottom up to the center of each existing horizontal and from the left side starting point to the center point of each existing vertical. Referring to the sample measurement diagrams and the Photo Gallery series on measuring for clarification is recommended. For Surface mounted panels measure the Width and Height of the opening see Diagram B to clarify where to measure. For Surface mounted panels please add 2 3/4 inches to the Width of the opening-this will make the panel wide enough to cover the window opening and overlap 1 3/8 of an inch on both left and right sides. Next measure the Height. Most windows Do have a Sill so it is only necessary to add 1 3/8 inch to the Height of the opening -the panel will rest on the Sill but will overlap 1 3/8 inch onto the top of the opening. If the window has No Sill you will measure the height of the opening and add 1 1/2 inches to the opening so that the panel overlaps 1 3/8 inch on both the top and bottom. For Recessed panels measure on the innermost part of the opening including the width of the stops. See Diagram C. For ease of installation and removal of Recessed panels please Subtract 1/4 inch from the height and width of the window opening. See diagram C. Since most windows are not perfectly square this 1/4 will allow the window insulating panels 1/8 inch of play all around. Step 5: Measure & note existing Grid work. Measure from the Left edge of where your panel starts to the Center of any Vertical grid members. Note that for a Surface mounted panel your starting point is 1 3/8 of an inch to the left of the opening. See Diagrams 0 & E. The starting point for Recess panels is the inner left of the window pocket. To measure the Horizontal grid members or note the middle of the window where the lock usually is and the window divides follow these instructions. If the window has a Sill that the panel will be sitting on then your starting point is the same regardless of the mounting type -it is the Sill. Measure any Horizontal members from the top of the Sill up to the Center of the grid member. Note that in the case of a No Sill situation and it is a Surface mount then your starting point for measuring Horizontals starts 1 3/8 of an inch below the bottom of the opening. See Diagrams D & E for clarification. Important: Measure to the Center of the grid work or muntin members not to the edges as was done in the past.
