2 UL 580 TEST REPORT Rendered to: ARMSTRONG WORLD INDUSTRIES P.O. Box 3511 Lancaster, Pennsylvania Report No.: Test Dates: 12/14/09 Through: 12/22/09 Report Date: 03/12/10 Expiration Date: 12/22/13 Project Summary: Architectural Testing, Inc. was contracted by Armstrong World Industries to perform testing on a Series/Model MW Vector, ceiling system, 3' OC. The test specimen area, measuring 10' x 10', was tested in accordance with Underwriters Laboratories, Inc., Standard for Safety for Tests for Uplift Resistance of Roof Assemblies, UL 580 (Fourth Edition, May 31, 1994). The purpose of this test is to evaluate the comparative resistance of roof assemblies to positive and negative pressures. This test simulates the effects of wind gusts by use of oscillating exterior pressure and constant interior pressures. Reference Chart #1 for test duration times, positive and negative pressures, Photo Nos. 1 and 2 for test equipment, Photo Nos. 3 through 9 for installation, and Sketch #1 for indicator locations. The sample was provided by the client. Test Specimen Description: Series/Model: MW Vector Chamber Construction: The test chamber was constructed of steel C-channel that measured 10' long. The C-channels were stacked and welded to form one side of a four sided chamber that measured 60" deep. Five W6 x 31 steel "I" beams were flush at the top of the chamber and equally spaced, welded at each end to the chamber. 2x6 Spruce-Pine-Fir wood was secured to the underside of the "I" beams with #12 x 2-1/2" long self-drilling Tek-screws, spaced 18" on center. The lumber was attached to the beams to facilitate securing one end of the compression post. The sides of the chamber utilized 2x6 Spruce-Pine-Fir wood, flush with the bottom of the chamber, secured with #12 x 2-1/2" long self-drilling Tek-screws, spaced 18" on center. A bead of silicone was located on the top side of the 2x6, between the steel test chamber and the 2x6 wood. The top closure was provided by the pyramidal shaped UL 580 chamber roof, (reference Photo No. 1). 130 Derry Court York, PA phone: fax:
3 Page 2 of 4 Test Specimen Description: (Continued) Ceiling Construction: The 7/8" by 7/8" wall molding, was fastened to the inside wood perimeter of the test chamber with #8 x 1" long truss head drywall screws, located 3" from each corner and spaced 16" on center. Four horizontal acoustical T-bar main beams were fitted onto the wall molding located 22-1/2" from each end and spaced 24" on center. The horizontal cross-tees were installed perpendicular to the horizontal main beams and located 22-1/2" from each end and spaced 24" on center. The grid was secured to the wall structure along the perimeter using wall anchors. Twelve U-shaped, 20 gauge, 2-1/2" steel studs were utilized as vertical compression posts. The compression posts were located on each main beam at the first main/cross-tee intersection and then every 3' on center. The compression post was attached to the main beam with four #8 x 1/2" long self-drilling screws, fastened through a bracing clip. The top of the post was fastened to the chamber beam with two #8 x 1" long sheet metal screws. The 2' x 2' metal panels were cut to fit the border dimension. Border panels were fastened to the grid using a #7 x 7/16" long framing screw through the border tab. The cut edge of the panel was held tight to the 7/8" wall molding using a 23-1/4" long section of 1" x 2" angle fastened to the wall molding with four #8 x 1/2"long truss head sheet metal screws. All full 2' x 2' metal panels were installed as per the manufacturer's recommendation. The ceiling was constructed with a 29" plenum depth. Peripheral Support: The test apparatus frame was fabricated from C15 by 33.9 steel channels, measuring 10' 0" wide by 10' 0" long by 1' 3" deep. A loose fitting pleated 4-mil plastic film was utilized to assist in obtaining uniform pressure on the underside of the ceiling system. Note: One assembly was tested per UL 580. The following summarizes observations made during the test at each class rating. Deflection measurements are included within tables attached to this report. Reference the attached Sketch #1 for location of deflection measurement devices. Test Results: The results are tabulated as follows: Class 30: Phases 1-5 PASSED No visible damage to system. Reference Table #1 for deflection measurements. Note: Testing stopped after Class 30 at client's request.
4 Page 3 of 4 General Test Note: Plastic film was used to assist in obtaining pressures. In our opinion, this did not influence test results.
