1 March 8 - Leader Guide The Ten Commandments Grades 2-3 Scripture Reference: Exodus 20:1 17 Lesson Focus: God tells us how to get along. Arrival Activity Spark Resources Activity Pages Supplies Pencils Markers Mural paper Masking tape If some kids arrive earlier than others and you need a lesson-based activity, make copies of the downloadable Activity Page and set them out for kids to try. Place the mural paper on the floor in your meeting area. Write the title "Get Along Graffiti" across the top of the mural paper. Hi! I'm happy to see you at Sunday school. Today we're going to look at the Bible story where God gave the Ten Commandments to Moses and all the people. One of the important things that the commandments do is show us how to treat each other. Think about the rules you have at your house that help show you how to treat your family and how to get along with people in your house. Write two or three of your family rules up on this Get Along Graffiti board. You can make drawings for your rules too, if you want. Hang the mural paper on the wall. Take your class to Large Group. 2 Supplies Mural paper from Arrival Activity Opening Prayer Spark Resources None Supplies None I think we're seeing that rules and commandments are pretty important for us. Let's say a prayer of thanks to God for giving us rules that show us how to get along. Pick one of the family rules that you put on the Get Along Graffiti board. We'll stand in a circle and I'll start the prayer. The person on my left will say, "Thank you, God," and then name the rule they are thankful for. Then we'll go around the circle so that each of you has a chance to thank God. Let's pray. ear God, Sometimes rules are hard to obey, but we do give you thanks for rules that help us get along with each other. Allow each kid to give a prayer of thanks. Amen. Open the Bible (15 minutes) The Ten Commandments Story Spark Resources Spark Bibles Supplies (provided) Sticky notes Pencils Before class begins mark nine separate sticky notes with the numbers 3, 7, 8, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, and 17. Hand them out to nine kids. If you have fewer than nine kids, give some kids more than one numbered sticky note. In your own Bible, underline verses 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 9, 10, and 11. These are the verses you'll read. We're going to read the Bible passage where God gave the commandments. I've given you a number of a Bible verse from Exodus 20:1 17. You can go ahead and underline that verse in your Bible. Pay close attention while we're reading. When we get to your verse, I want you to read it. I will read all of the other verses. 3 Scissors Before class begins, photocopy and enlarge the Fun Facts below by 100%. Cut each sentence out and then divide each sentence in two by cutting at the gap. Give each kid a portion of one of the Fun Facts. If you have more than 12 kids, have some kids pair up. If you have fewer than 12 kids, give some kids more than one slip of paper. Some of you have the first half of a Fun Fact; some of you have the second half. Compare your half with those of other kids until everyone has matched up their Fun Facts. Once kids have matched all Fun Facts, have them read them out loud. Although we call them the Ten Commandments, the Bible never numbers them. Just like the entire Old Testament, Hebrew is the original language of the commandments. The first three commandments show us how to have a relationship with God. The last seven commandments show us how to have relationships with others. Exodus 31:18 says that God gave Moses the commandments on Mount Sinai. Moses was on Mount Sinai with God for forty days. The 11 th Commandment Supplies (all provided) Scissors The 11th Commandment: Wisdom from Our Children white construction paper markers pencils Read The 11th Commandment: Wisdom from Our Children to the class. If you could make up an 11 th commandment that you think God s people need, what would it be? Brainstorm some ideas. Encourage students to write it on their paper and illustrate it. 4 Closing Prayer Spark Resources Family Pages Supplies None For our closing prayer I want you to think of someone in your family or at your school who you've been having a difficult time getting along with lately. on't say his or her name out loud; just think about the person. Now think of ways that the commandments could help you get along with him or her. After a minute of thinking about this I'll say a prayer for us. Allow about a minute of silence begin praying. ear God, Thank you for giving us the commandments to help us get along with each other. 5 Although we call them the Ten Commandments, the Bible never numbers them. Just like the entire Old Testament, Hebrew is the original language of the commandments. The first three commandments show us how to have a relationship with God. The last seven commandments show us how to have relationships with others. Exodus 31:18 says that God gave Moses the commandments on Mount Sinai. Moses was on Mount Sinai with God for forty days.

8 Art Extra The Ten Commandments Grades 3 4 Newspaper Paintings Kids make newspaper paintings to remind them that God tells us how to get along. Spark Resources: None Supplies: Newspaper (to cover worktable) Tempera paint, assorted colors Shallow containers Paintbrushes Newspaper (to use as art paper) Colorful construction paper Glue Markers (optional) Set-up: Cover the worktable with newspaper. Set aside additional newspaper for kids to use as art paper. Pour paint into shallow containers. Instructions: Imagine how Moses must have felt when God gave him the Ten Commandments. It must have been pretty amazing. What do you think it looked like when Moses received those tablets? Was the sky stormy? What were the people doing while they waited for Moses to come back down the mountain? The Bible tells us that the people in the story couldn't get along. That's why God gave Moses the commandments. God told the people in our story how to get along, and God tells us how to get along! Let's use our imaginations to paint a picture of what it might have looked like when Moses brought those commandments to the people. I can't wait to see what you create! 1. Explain that kids will paint newspaper today a different type of paper to paint on. 2. Encourage kids to paint their versions of the Bible story. 3. When kids are satisfied with their designs, have them frame their art by gluing it on colorful construction paper. Your paintings are wonderful! 9 Invite kids to use markers to make drawings of the story. If you have more time... ivide kids into three groups and ask each group to work together to create a painting of today's story. When kids are finished, attach the three pieces of group artwork to make a long mural. isplay the mural a hallway or on a central bulletin board for all to see. 10 Wild Card Extra The Ten Commandments Grades 3 4 on't Covet Kids view a film clip and discuss what it means to covet as they remember that God tells us how to get along. When she denies her actions, he makes the entire class wait until she admits her wrongdoing.) Set-up: Preview the clip. Prepare to show the clip during class time. Instructions: Gather the kids. Invite them to read Exodus 20:17 on pages of their Spark Story Bibles. What does it mean to covet? (to want or desire something that belongs to someone else; not wanting one of your own but actually wanting the very thing that belongs to the other person) How can coveting hurt your relationship with a friend? Allow kids to respond. God wants us to have loving relationships with God and other people, so God tells us how to get along. We're going to watch a film clip about getting along. 1. Introduce the clip. 2. Show the clip. 3. What did Shameika do? (cut in line) How is cutting in line a form of coveting? (She wanted the spot in line that belonged to someone else.) How did Shameika's action affect her relationship with others? Allow kids to respond. God wants us to have a good relationship with God and others, so God tells us the rules. God tells us how to get along. If you have less time... Talk about the example of cutting in line rather than viewing the clip. If you have more time...
