4 Mathematics Education The project Development of Courses and Recruitment Models for Attracting and Preparing Middle Grade Mathematics Teachers was a project funded by the NSF during A primary goal of the project was the strengthening and improvement of the mathematics preparation of middle school mathematics teachers through the development and delivery of four foundational mathematics courses, along with accompanying support materials. A second goal was the development of aggressive and viable teacher recruitment models that could help address the problem of teacher shortages across the United States. My responsibilities and involvement with the project included: (1) The design and development of a college-level calculus course, specifically aimed at prospective and in-service middle grade mathematics teachers, that provides a strong foundation in calculus and exhibits connections with the mathematics that is taught in the middle school. In conjunction with this course, I co-authored (with D. Mitrea) the book Calculus connections and an accompanying solutions manual. The book was published by Prentice Hall in 2006 and the solutions manual is available online through Prentice Hall. (2) Co-organizing two summer institutes, one in 2002 and one in The goal at these summer institutes was to pilot the new curricular materials and to provide solid preparation to the middle grade mathematics teachers who participated. (3) Teaching the calculus course at an outreach-post during Winter Semester 2003 in Blue Springs, MO. (5) Co-organizing two Advisory Board Meetings, one at the Lake of the Ozarks and one at the University of Missouri, and a national conference on the mathematical preparation for middle school mathematics teachers in St. Louis.
